TALLAHASSEE Floridas seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.3 percent in May 2014, slightly up
fromtheApril2014rateof6.2percent,anddown1.2percentagepointsfrom7.5percentayearago.There
were606,000joblessFloridiansoutofalaborforceof9,632,000.TheU.S.unemploymentratewasalso6.3
percentinMay.Floridasunemploymentratehasbeenequaltoorbelowthenationalratefor13consecutive
months.
Floridas seasonally adjusted total nonagricultural employment was 7,761,900 in May 2014, a decrease of
17,900jobs(0.2percent)overthemonth.ComparedtoMayayearago,thenumberofjobsinthestatewas
upby218,800,anincreaseof2.9percent.Nationally,thenumberofjobswasup1.7percentovertheyear.
FloridasannualjobgrowthratehasexceededthenationsratesinceApril2012.

ThenumberofjobsinFloridawas7,761,900inMay2014,up218,800jobscomparedtoayearago.May2014
wasthe46thconsecutivemonthwithpositiveannualjobgrowthafterthestatelostjobsforoverthreeyears.
Theindustrygainingthemostjobswastrade,transportation,andutilities(+53,500jobs,+3.4percent).
Otherindustriesgainingjobsincludedprofessionalandbusinessservices(+40,300jobs,+3.6percent);leisure
andhospitality(+38,400jobs,+3.7percent);construction(+35,300jobs,+9.8percent);privateeducationand
health services (+20,300 jobs, +1.8 percent); financial activities (+12,900 jobs, +2.5 percent); manufacturing
(+7,200jobs,+2.2percent);otherservices(+5,800jobs,+1.9percent);information(+3,200jobs,+2.4percent);
andgovernment(+1,700jobs,+0.2percent).
These industry job gains were partially due to increases in food and beverage stores; employment services;
food services and drinking places; specialty trade contractors; ambulatory health care services; insurance
carriers and related activities; fabricated metal product manufacturing; membership associations and
organizations;telecommunications;andstategovernment.
LocalAreaUnemploymentStatistics(NotSeasonallyAdjusted)
In May 2014, Walton County had the states lowest unemployment rate (3.4 percent), followed by Monroe
County (3.6 percent); Okaloosa County (4.4 percent); and Alachua and Wakulla counties (4.8 percent each).
Many of the counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high proportions of
governmentemployment.
HendryCountyhadthehighestunemploymentrate(9.4percent)inFloridainMay2014,followedbyFlagler
County(8.6percent),HamiltonCounty(8.5percent),MadisonCounty(8.0percent),andPutnamCounty(7.9
percent).TherewerenocountieswithdoubledigitunemploymentratesforAprilorMay.
AreaNonagriculturalEmployment(NotSeasonallyAdjusted)
Ofthe22metroareasinthestate,20hadovertheyearjobgainsinMay2014.Theareaswiththelargest
gains were OrlandoKissimmeeSanford (+36,100 jobs, +3.4 percent), MiamiMiami BeachKendall (+30,500
jobs,+2.9percent),andFt.LauderdalePompanoBeachDeerfieldBeach(+24,000jobs,+3.2percent).
ThemetroareasthatlostjobsovertheyearwereOcala(300jobs,0.3percent),andSebastianVeroBeach
(100jobs,0.2percent).
