TALLAHASSEE Floridas seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.1 percent in July 2013, holding
steady over the month, but down 1.6 percentage points from 8.7 percent a year ago. The states May,
June,andJulyrateswerethelowestsinceSeptember2008whenitwas7.0percent.Therewere665,000
jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 9,404,000. The U.S. July unemployment rate was 7.4 percent.
Floridasunemploymentratewas0.3percentagepointlowerthantheU.S.rateandwasbelowthenational
rateforthefifthconsecutivemonth.
Floridasseasonallyadjustedtotalnonagriculturalemploymentwas7,549,600in July 2013,anincreaseof
27,600jobs(+0.4percent)overthemonth.Thenumberofjobsinthestatewasup143,700from July a
yearago,anincreaseof1.9percent.Nationally,thenumberofjobsalsowasup1.7percentovertheyear.

FloridasNonagriculturalEmploymentbyIndustry(SeasonallyAdjusted)

ThenumberofjobsinFloridawas7,549,600inJuly2013,up143,700jobscomparedtoayearago.July2013wasthe
36thconsecutivemonthwithpositiveannualjobgrowthafterthestatelostjobsforoverthreeyears.Theindustry
gainingthemostjobswastrade,transportation,andutilities(+53,800jobs,+3.5percent).

Otherindustriesgainingjobsincludedleisureandhospitality(+25,600jobs,+2.6percent);professionalandbusiness
services(+24,200jobs,+2.3percent);privateeducationandhealthservices(+20,500jobs,+1.8percent);construction
(+15,700jobs,+4.6percent);financialactivities(+7,700jobs,+1.5percent);otherservices(+2,300jobs,+0.7percent);
andinformation(+1,900jobs,+1.4percent).

Theseindustryjobgainswerepartiallyduetoincreasesinfoodandbeveragestores;foodservicesanddrinkingplaces;
services to buildings and dwellings; ambulatory health care services; specialty trade contractors; real estate; and
membershipassociationsandorganizations.

Totalgovernment(6,000jobs,0.6percent)andmanufacturing(2,100jobs,0.7percent)lostjobsovertheyear.

Theseindustryjoblosseswerepartiallyduetodeclinesinfederalgovernmentandcomputerandelectronicproduct
manufacturing.

LocalAreaUnemploymentStatistics(NotSeasonallyAdjusted)

InJuly2013,MonroeandWaltoncounties(4.2percenteach)hadthestateslowestunemploymentrates,followedby
Okaloosa County (5.1 percent), Franklin County (5.5 percent), and St. Johns County (5.6 percent). Many of the
counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high proportions of government
employment.Seasonaltourismalsowasacontributingfactor.

HendryCountyhadthehighestunemploymentrate(15.5percent)inFloridainJuly2013,followedbyFlaglerandSt.
Lucie counties (10.4 percent each); Putnam County (10.0 percent); and Indian River County (9.7 percent). Hendry
CountyhadthehighestunemploymentrateinthestateinJulyduetoseasonaldeclinesinagricultureandlongterm
joblossesinstategovernment.TherewerefourFloridacountieswithdoubledigitunemploymentrateslastmonth,
upfromthreeinJune.

AreaNonagriculturalEmployment(NotSeasonallyAdjusted)

Twentyofthe22metroareasinthestatehadovertheyearjobgainsinJuly2013.Theareaswiththelargestgains
were TampaSt. PetersburgClearwater (+41,900 jobs, +3.7 percent), OrlandoKissimmeeSanford (+23,200, +2.3
percent),andJacksonville(+17,900jobs,+3.0percent).

ThetwometroareasthatlostjobsovertheyearwerePanamaCityLynnHavenPanamaCityBeach(2,100jobs,2.8
percent)andPalmCoast(300jobs,1.5percent).
