Bill Losner honored at DCFB BBQ

became a banker after graduating
from South Dade High School in
1956.

By: Sonia Colon

Every year, Dade County honors an individual who has made an impact in
Miami Dade agriculture at the Annual Barbeque and Fundraiser. At the 36th
Annual Barbeque on April 26, 2014, Bill Losner was inducted into the Hall of
Honor for his outstanding contributions to agriculture. Dade County Farm
Bureau is thankful to have had Bill Losner as an advocate for agriculture for
so many years.
Bill Losner is a 3rd generation Homestead resident. His grandfather, Max
Losner helped open First National Bank in 1932 and became the bank
president, Bill followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and father and

His grandfather urged him to

work in banking even though he
initially wasnt interested getting
into the family business. However,
he began working as a teller at 1st
National Bank of South Florida.
Glad he took his grandfathers
advice, Bill Losner moved on to
work for the Bank of Perrine and
becoming president of the bank
in 1974. After Bills father retired
from 1st National Bank in 1980,
Bill Losner became president of
the bank.
Bill Losner has been actively
volunteering for the community
his entire life. He is a board
member of Dade County Farm
Bureau, Homestead/ Florida City
Chamber of Commerce, and
Rotary Club just to name a few.
He has taken a particular interest
in helping the farmers of Miami

Publishers Note
The Voice of Agriculture is the quarterly publication of the Dade County
Farm Bureau, Miami-Dade Countys oldest and largest agricultural
organization. The Farm Bureau was established in 1942 to collectively
solve agricultural issues in the regulatory, legislative, economic and
social arena. For advertising or membership information please
contact Debbie Brady at (305) 246-5514.

Presidents Message

narcotic because it contains no THC. THC is the chemical that makes people feel
high. This bill will allow the concentrated oil to be legally extracted, transported,
possessed and administered by licensed personnel and Doctors the same way
other medicines are. Medical research can now be conducted here in Florida as
well. This bill may bring opportunity for approved growers to farm, cultivate, and
manufacture CBD Cannabis. Governor Scott separated the State into five regions
and one grower from each region will be chosen in January 2015. Many growers
are interested but the criteria for this is still to be defined. The Department of
Health will engage in rule making which will be public process. The bill was
signed a few days ago so stay tuned.

The summer is here and it is evident all around

our town. Its summer harvest time and Okra,
Bitter Melon, Malaga, Boniato, Dragon Fruit,
Mangos, Papayas, Lychee, Avocado, and Guava
are some of the summer crops being harvested.
The nurseries are busy cleaning up from spring,
potting plants and building inventories for next
spring. Many nursery growers reported that
sales were good for most this spring which
is encouraging to hear; despite the many
adversities growers face each day.
Dade County Farm Bureau visited Tallahassee
and Washington DC in the spring. The session
was a productive one for legislators and Farm
Bureau was at the forefront advocating for
growers.
One highlight of the legislative session in
Tallahassee was the passing of Senate Bill
1030 on Charlottes Web (CBD) Cannabis
sponsored by Representative Katie Edwards.
If you do not know already this Cannabis
will not get you high. It is grown for the oil it
contains that has been shown to stop epileptic
seizures in patients after the first dose is taken.
It has also been shown to stop the division of
cancer cells! You do not smoke this Cannabis.
The oil from this plant is extracted and usually
administered in capsule form. This bill exempts
CBD Cannabis from being classified as a class 1

Once more information is available our organization will provide an update.

Water continues to be an important issue facing growers and residents. A water
meeting was held on April 17 by our organization. It was attended by over 90
growers and they had the chance to have a Q&A with Army Corps of Engineers
and SFWMD. The growers that have been impacted by excessive water for the
past several years shared their stories. A letter was sent last week to the Ltc.
Greco, Army Corps of Engineers requesting a follow up meeting with the growers
and residents of South Dade for the plan of operations for July 2014-March 2015.
A response to the letter has not been received. Representative Holly Rashein is
planning to meet with SFWMD on July 1. The planning for the fall is now and it
is very hard to make financial decisions when the land you farm is being flooded.
This issue has had the attention of our local governments. Commissioner Lynda
Bell sponsored Resolution 14140 and it passed unanimously by the Miami
Dade County Commission. This resolution supports the Mod Waters Project
Completion and implementation of the project. Governer Scott has promised
funding for this project in his budget. We need to keep the momentum flowing
so that SFWMD allocates funding too. Commissioner Lynda Bell has been
a strong advocate for the agricultural industry and the Dade Farm PAC has
endorsed her for those efforts.
As summertime gears up I want to wish everyone an enjoyable and productive
summer with your families. Make sure and let your produce manager know you
want locally grown Avocados and other tropical fruits. Lets keep the message
going. Buy Local!
Sincerely,

George Butler
President

Bill Losner Hall of Honor

DCFB Celebrates
Ag Literacy Day 2014

(continued from page 1) Dade County with several

issues that have plagued the farming industry over the
years.
Everyone I grew up with was involved with agriculture.
I went to bat for farmers because they work from sunrise
to sunset, they dont have the time, Losner said.
Bill has gone to bat over and over for agriculture in South
Dade. He has faced water issues, the incorporation of the
Redland, and other issues that could negatively affect
local growers. Bill continues to advocate for agriculture
because it is important to him.
The future of South Dade is very important to me. My
roots are here. I grew up here, he said.
In his spare time, Bill enjoys spending time with his wife
Doylene, their sons and grandchildren. He also enjoys
flying and fishing.

Florida Agriculture in the Classroom, Inc. invited the Florida agriculture industry to read
its newest storybook to elementary school
children that showcased the variety of agricultural projects being done in schools. Dade
County Farm Bureau took part in Ag Literacy
Day in May by reading to the students at several schools in Miami Dade County. The annual
reading event is a chance for farmers, ranchers, University of Florida IFAS extension and
4-H agents and master gardeners, FFA teachers and students and agriculture industry representatives to read a childrens book about
the Florida agriculture industry to students in
kindergarten through fifth grade. This years
book is titled Florida Farms at School.

Rieder Realty Celebrates 40 Years in Business

A lot has changed in Rieder Realtys 40 years of selling vacant

land in South Miami-Dade. On April 17, 1974, Tom Rieder,
opened Rieder Realty, a real estate firm specializing in the
sale of vacant land, in an office building next door to Captains
Tavern on SW 98th Street and US 1, in what is now Pinecrest.
His office has moved, but it is just across US 1.

and the Dade EEL Program. Today, Rieder Realty sells

conservation easements throughout Florida.

What has changed is where the farm land is these days. When
Tom opened his office he drove by farms on the way to work
in what is now Pinecrest. There were mango groves and
strawberry fields on SW 98th Street. There still were groves
and row crops on Old Cutler Road. These have all given way to
residential development. As Kendall developed and moved
west, Rieder Realty sold to investors and developers. Today,
the Redland is the primary agricultural area in Dade County.

In 1974, vacant land was selling from $1,700-$4,000 per

acre. Farmland leased for $55-75 per acre per year. Currently
acreage is selling mostly in the range of $20,000-$40,000 per
acre. Farmland is leasing from $400-$575 per acre per year.

The East glade was potato land, which became tree nurseries
all taking advantage of the rich marl soil. The property on the
west side of canal L-31 in the 1970s and 1980s was planted in
several thousand acres of limes and row crops. Today that is
part of the Everglades National Park.
Historically, Rieder Realty has always worked with the growers
in South Dade. Tom is a director on the Dade County Farm
Bureau and is very involved in issues favorable to agriculture.
Selling vacant land today requires much more knowledge
of environmental laws, farming practices, and hydrology.
As environmental concerns changed in the 1980s and
1990s, Rieder Realty became more involved in conservation
properties. At that time Rieder Realty sold approximately
7,000 Acres to the South Florida Water Management District

Land sales have gone from primarily local and national buyer
to international buyers looking at South Florida as a safe
haven and a good investment.

Aviation has always been an important part of Rieder Realtys

business from aerial photography to meeting buyers and
sellers in other parts of the state. Rieder Realty now uses a first
person viewing GPS equipped drone for taking aerial photos.
Yes, things have changed in 40 years but what hasnt are the
companys owner, honesty, knowledge, and love of land sales
all over Florida.

36th Annual BBQ and FUNraiser Highlights

6

The historical Dade County Farm Bureau BBQ and FUNRaiser was held April 26th at the Dimare Annex. This marked
the 36th BBQ for DCFB, where members of the community joined together for a night of great food, dancing and conversation. The evening began with dinner which featured succulent prime rib, chicken, pork tenderloin and the finest
locally grown vegetables. Then Jade Sanders, a local talent, began the program singing the national anthem while the
Air Reserve Base Color Guard presented the colors. Attendees witnessed Hall of Honor inductee, Bill Losner receive
proclamations from the City of Homestead, Miami Dade County and Florida City. After the Hall of Honor presentation,
Dade County Farm Bureaus Harvest Queen and Princess were awarded with a scholarship and a token for all their hard
work. The program also included the presentation of scholarships awarded to Teresa Suits, a senior at South Dade and
FFA president. It then came time to do the truck raffle. Grand Prize Chevrolet, the truck raffle sponsor drew the ticket
of Jack Walker. After the program wrapped up, DJ Leroy played plenty of dance-worthy music while young and old
boogied the night away. The proceeds from the BBQ benefit the Dade County Farm Bureaus efforts to keep agriculture
economically viable through educational, promotional and legislative efforts. The Dade County Farm Bureau would
like to thank all who supported the event through ticket sales, attendance, and sponsorships.

Queen, I hope to accomplish being a great role model

to all the new and upcoming young people. I come
from a fourth generation farm family so agriculture
is very close to my heart. I also hope to educate and
inspire people to be more active in the agriculture
community and to show them there is so much more
than just a farmer in a field. It takes hard work, dedication, and strong passion to succeed in the agricultural
community. I hope to leave a lasting impression on everyone I come in contact with and show them theres
more to being the Harvest Queen then just a crown
and a sash.

Amber Walker, 19, was crowned the 2014 Dade County Farm
Bureau Harvest Queen at the 36th Annual BBQ and FunRaiser
on April 26, 2014. Amber is a graduate of the 2013 class from
South Dade Senior High School. She currently attends Miami
Dade College with dreams of being a Veterinarian. Her hobbies include softball, hunting, fishing and any type of outdoor
activity.
Amber Walker dived headfirst into the roll as Harvest Queen
by volunteering at events with DCFB. Amber said, as Harvest

Board Members and PAC co-chairs Tom Rieder and Peter Schnebly attended the Florida Farm Bureau
Annual Legislative Days with DCFB Executive Director Debbie Brady and Executive Assistant Sonia Colon
in March. Farm Bureau members and staff from all over the state were present, meeting legislators, and
discussing important issues in regards to agriculture.

Miami International Ag & Cattle Show

8

The 7th Annual Miami International Ag, Horse and Cattle Show took place April 12th and 13th at the recently renovated Ronald Reagan Equestrian Center at Tropical Park. The well attended event featured shows, activities and rides for families to enjoy. The show is put on by Commissioner Javier Souto, County Agricultural
Manager, Charles LaPradd, Moreno Farms, and Miami Dade Parks and Recreation.
Kids of all ages were having a good time enjoying the AGventure and animal shows. Undoubtedly, petting
and getting up close and personal with mini horses, chicks and cows was a highlight for most families. The
event also featured live bands, art & crafts exhibitions, food, animal vendors and plant vendors. The Dade
County Farm Bureau helped put together the AGventure along with IFAS, USDA and 4-H. Families learned
to make butter, milk a cow, and learn all the byproducts of cows through a game entitled, Beef-O-Bingo.
The two new arenas at Tropical Park made this years show even bigger and better. The biggest of them all
was The Magic City Sale. This international live auction for cattle genetics is the most successful live auction
in the country. The Magic City Sale is simulcast internationally via the internet. The South Florida Trail Riders, Pedro SiFuetntes, Medieval Times, and Homestead Everglades Posse performed in the arena throughout the weekend, putting on shows that were enjoyed by thousands of spectators.
All proceeds from this event benefited the education and therapy for children with Autism.
