Ikal, Arai and Jimbron are three best friends living in a poverty-stricken area of Belitung Island. The hardship of life does not
hinder them from getting education, even if that means having to endure miles and miles of travelling to the neighbouring
port city of Manggar.
Like any other normal teenagers, the three soon discover that life is more than just what’s around them. A helpful teacher
teaching them the wisdom of life, a headmaster with strict rule of teaching, and the appeal given by the opposite sex.
Troubles soon arise.

Tuck Chai is a 23 years-old man having a relationship with Ying, a 15 years-old high schooler. Their secret forbidden love went
well until Ying’s friend done something that caused her parents to discover her illicit relationship. They threatened to sue
Tuck Chai since having sexual relationship with underages is a serious offence. Tuck Chai’s mother offered them a monetary
compensation to set things right, but they insist in suing him. Horrified by the consequences, Tuck Chai had to resort with
drastic measures.
Tuck Chai adalah seorang pria berusia 23 tahun yang menjalin hubungan dengan Ying, seorang murid sekolah menengah berusia

Originally trained as an architect, Yuhang Ho went into film-making due to his love for vintage films. He had won several awards,
notably for his films Sanctuary (2004) and Min (2003).

Every year nearly 10 million Iranians send their letters to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with hopes of better lives. Despite
his growing popularity, the president’s populist policies are yet to prove themselves since most Iranians are still living in
poverty. Petr Lom, the director of the film, was allowed to accompany the president on several countryside trips (the only
foreigner given such access), and the result is an astounding look of Iran beyond the news.
Setiap tahun hampir 10 juta warga Iran mengirimkan surat kepada sang Presiden Mahmoud Ahmadinejad dengan harapan akan
membawa kehidupan yang lebih baik. Walaupun popularitasnya mulai berkembang, kebijakan populis sang presiden belum dapat
terbukti ampuh karena masih banyak warga Iran yang hidup dalam kemiskinan. Petr Lom, sang sutradara, adalah orang asing

Petr Lom is an independent documentary director and producer. Entirely self-taught, he directs, shoots and edits his own
films. He is a former academic with a Ph.D. in political philosophy from Harvard University. His previous films are BRIDE
KIDNAPPING IN KYRGYZSTAN (2004), ON A TIGHTROPE (2007), YOU CANNOT HIDE FROM ALLAH (2007). The latter two films
will be screened in JIFFest this year.

This is a tale of three souls who find solace in religion. Brian has lost his faith in Christianity since he was 12 after being
humiliated by his father, a strict Catholic. During his teaching days at the school, he meets the two sisters who often recite
verses from the holy Qur’an and gain simple knowledge of Islam. Each of their life journeys will never be the same again.

Indonesian Feature Film Competition: Jury Profile
For the fourth time since 2006, JIFFest holds Indonesian Feature Film Competition. From
all eligible films released in cinemas and other screening venues from October 1, 2008, to
September 30, 2009, 15 films have been preliminary chosen for competition to win Best In-
donesian Feature and Best Indonesian Director prizes. For the first time, the Best Indonesian
Director prize will go to the director in his/her first or second feature work.
Jury Profile
Past winners in the competition include DENIAS SINGING ON THE CLOUDS (Best Feature,
2006), Rudi Soedjarwo (Best Director, 2006), 3 DAYS TO FOREVER (Best Feature, 2007), Deddy
Mizwar (Best Director, 2007), QUICKIE EXPRESS (Best Feature, 2008) and Mouly Surya (Best
Director, 2008).
International jury members that will be present in the festival for the competition are: 15

Brynjar Bjerkem is the Head of Programming with Du store verden!, a production unit dedicated to
international arts based in Oslo, Norway.
He is member of the programme committee with the Oslo Films from the South festival, with a

Laura Coppens is currently working on her PhD in Social Anthropology at Zurich University,
Switzerland. Parallel to her work at university she is producing her own films and holds
several jobs for both film festivals and film productions. Since 2007 she is the director and
head of the Southeast Asia section as well as the Queer Asia section of ASIAN HOT SHOTS
BERLIN, the first festival for Asian independent film and video art in Berlin, Germany.

Thomas Chia co-founded Lighthouse Pictures in 2002, distributing indie and art-house
cinema. Lighthouse Pictures went on to acquire award-winning films with commercial
potential, distributes films from MGM Studios, Overture Pictures and also represents a library
of over 200 feature films and documentaries from Russia. Additionally, Lighthouse Pictures
represents select films from Singapore and Malaysia in the film festivals and markets.

INTRODUCTION
Two opposite things are apparent in Indonesian film scene in 2009: one is the fixed
formula that leads to repetition in theme, character and plot, and on the other end is the
product diversification that tends to be stronger than ever.
With a particular attention to the latter, some production companies have made their sec-
ond line companies to make products appealing to the mass. In some cases, this leads to
putting out instant films with low production values in the market. In other cases, some
try to revive Indonesian film genres of the past with contemporary language of filmmak-
ing.
In addition, emerging names keep popping up in film conversation, as they may be lured
by the growing prospect of film business, or simply by ideas they are dying to tell. The
new filmmakers opt for popular approaches in hope that their films can be seen by large
number of audiences.
The effort to redefine the genre goes in sync with other films that opt to remain static in
their artistic achievement. Alas, the spirit to break through the convention by these new
films remind us that often, success cannot always be measured by box-office receipts.
In this year’s 11th JIFFest, Rumah Film helps selecting Indonesian films short-listed for
Indonesian Feature Film Competition. Aside from Best Film, a new rule for Best Director
award will only be given for a first or second time director. We hope that the award will
encourage more new talents to come.
Ada dua hal paling mencolok di industri film Indonesia tahun ini: pertama, formula “ban ber-
jalan” yang semakin mapan dan terus dilakukan lewat pengulangan tema, tokoh serta rumus
baku; dan kedua, diversifikasi produk yang juga menguat.
Tahun ini mulai bermunculan lini produksi dari rumah produksi besar untuk kelas film yang
“lebih populer” dan lebih dekat dengan selera massal. Dalam beberapa kasus, ini bisa juga
berarti produk instan dengan production value yang lebih rendah. Pada kasus lain, ada yang
malah mencoba menghidupkan kembali genre film Indonesia di masa lalu, dengan bahasa
film yang menyesuaikan diri dengan perkembangan tema dan estetika kontemporer.
Selain itu, nama-nama baru bermunculan terus, baik karena prospek bisnis film yang diang-
gap baik maupun karena gagasan yang ingin mereka sampaikan. Yang unik, pendekatan
populer juga menjadi pilihan utama bagi para pemain baru ini, dengan harapan film-film itu
mampu bicara kepada sebanyak mungkin penonton.
Usaha populerisasi dan menemukan (ulang) genre ini memang terus sejalan dengan bebera-
pa film yang masih pelakukan pendekatan artistik yang ideosinkretik. Keberanian membuat
terobosan yang dilakukan oleh film-film ini tetap memberi tanda bahwa ukuran keberhasilan
sinema tak semata-mata berupa jumlah penonton.
Dalam edisi ke-sebelas JIFFest, Rumah Film menyeleksi film-film Indonesia untuk dikompetisi-
kan di Indonesian Feature Film Competition guna mencatat perkembangan kecenderungan-
kecenderungan di atas tadi. Satu film akan dipilih menjadi Film Terbaik, sedangkan predikat
Sutradara Terbaik hanya bisa dimenangkan oleh sutradara yang baru membuat satu atau
dua film cerita panjang. Hal ini diharapkan menjadi tradisi sehingga Jiffest ke depannya

In collaboration with Inter College Animation Festival (ICAF), The Japan Foundation presents screening of 20 selected
animated works from ICAF 2009. This screening is the first appearance in South East Asia for ICAF. We invite Prof. Tokumitsu
Kifune from Tokyo Zokei University in charge of ICAF festival director as a quest speaker and Mr. Wahyu Aditya from Hello
Motion as a moderator of discussion. Prof. Kifune will speak about the development of Inter College Animation Festival and
give the brief overview of animation production in Japan nowadays.
The program will also be held in Serambi Salihara, Tuesday, November 8, 2009 from 2 pm. The screening in this
venue will be followed by discussion from Prof. Kifune and Wahyu Aditya.

Christian Lorenz Scheurer is a concept artist for films and video games. His art
directed the conceptual stages for such films as The Fifth Element, The Matrix,
and Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. He also contributed to the concept and
matte art of Square’s entry in The Animatrix. He was a central contributor of art
to Final Fantasy IX and serving a similar role on Mistwalker’s role-playing game
“Lost Odyssey”.

Tutor profile:
David Weber was one of the writers of La Piste (The Trail), directed in 2004 by
Academy Award nominated Eric Valli for Gaumont Productions. He teaches how
to write the short film as well as the basics of dramatic screenwriting.
He is an active lecturer and consultant in Europe, where for the last 10 years,
he has been part of a cadre of writers from USC to instruct at the Copenhagen-
based North by Northwest program, an intensive EU-sponsored training
ground for professional screenwriters.
Since 2005, JIFFest has established its own JIFFest Script Development Competition & Workshop (JSDC). This year JIFFest only
52 focuses on Feature Film Script Development, inviting semi-to-fully professionals screenwriters to submit their ideas to us.
The short-listed writers will then be invited again to develop their projects under the guidance of David Weber (screenwriting
teacher, USC).
Winner in this year’s JSDC will receive development fund prize of IDR 20 million. The workshop is proudly supported by
Jakarta Arts Council.

Against the prospective growth of Indonesian film outputs in a year, there has never been any public
talk about marketing and promoting film in town. Yet, the two elements cannot be any more crucial in
getting a film to a wider recognition that often crosses boundaries of countries or continents.
Join us in learning the basic ropes of film marketing and film promotion that will be given by Thomas
Chia (distributor, Lighthouse Picture, Singapore) and Bao Mai Nguyen (VP Marketing, Vietnam Media
Department, Vietnam). A must-attend for everyone in the film scene, or those who are about to jump
in!
Continuing last year’s similar discussion on Indonesian film as one of the key elements in the nation’s
creative industry, this year’s discussion will focus more on the recent development of Indonesian film
scene after the recent film bill has been established.
Last year’s notable speakers and key participants are expected to return in the discussion, and
they include: Ukus Kuswara (Film Department, Ministry of Culture and Tourism), Mira Lesmana
(producer), Chand Parwez Servia (producer), Ananda Siregar (exhibitor), Harris Lasmana (exhibitor)
and member of House of Representative.
Using the speed-dating concept, invited projects of feature films will be pitched to a panel of local
and international producers/investors in only a few minutes per pitch-dating session. This is a chance
for each feature project to assess its own strength,quality and possible financing upon completion of
54 the concept. International producers panel will include Lorna Tee (film producer, Hong Kong), Taku
Ushiyama (film producer, Japan) and Lim Young Chien (film producer, China).

For the first time, JIFFest has an integrating system with Blitzmegaplex as our official screening venue to
provide tickets to watch films in JIFFest. The system allows everyone to buy tickets at their convenience,
and a chance to choose preferred seats during transactions.
• World Cinema category, IDR 25,000 for one film in one screening time.
• World Cinema Documentary & Madani categories, IDR 15,000, for one film in one screening time.
• Variety, Indonesian Feature Film Competition, and A View from the SEA categories are free.
• Entrance tickets for free screenings will only be given during the festival period (December 4-12, 2009).
The tickets will be distributed 1 hour prior to screening time in front of the respective auditoriums every-
day. One person is entitled for one entrance ticket only in each screening.
