...and so it is in our efforts towards building a new clubhouse for SAFTEA. But more importantly,
with or without physical premises to call our own, is the kinship and camaraderie, which is
still very much alive. This is evident in the activities, which were held after the closure of the
clubhouse in Jalan Pudu...

A Message
From the President

Dear Members & friends of the SAFTEA,

Moving forward since my last message in the previous Berita, much has
happened (its never boring at SAFTEA!). We celebrated our final party, The
Last Hurrah, at the clubhouse on 28 September 2013. It was a night to
remember, which was ably organised by Vice President 1, Darren Duarte
and his team. It was a joy indeed to have both the senior and the younger
generation come together to bid the clubhouse farewell. A rather nice
ambience where easy-listening music was interspersed with heavy metal
mix! The bar of the clubhouse ceased operations after the final Friday
Members Night on 5 October 2013. It was a nostalgic moment but many
members and friends, who had not been to the clubhouse for a while, made
the effort to attend that night.
After that, it was down to sorting, packing and selling off selected items.
Valuable and priceless items, such as documents and photographs were
safely packed and stored away. Most of the other chattels and the building
structure were sold. Our thanks go to Maurice Dragon for his suggestion
to sell the building. He has also assisted us to store some of the tables and
chairs, until such time these items are required for use.
The last day at the clubhouse witnessed the signing of the agreement with UDA Holdings
Berhad on 23 October 2013. We gave up our premises at 167, Jalan Pudu and were given
the title and the memorandum of transfer to the land in Jalan Bangsar Utama 8. The tenant of
UDA had, before he vacated the premises at Jalan Bangsar Utama 8, removed the roof of the
structure on the Land. (Please see the pictures on the following pages). However, SAFTEA
was fortunate that there was an interested party who was willing to rent the Land. There are
still the issues, inter alia, of stamp duty, which are expected to amount between RM60,000 and
RM150,000 for us to contend with.
Our spirit of the show must go on was seen in the fact that most of our functions for 2013
proceeded. This was the November Family Lunch and the Christmas Cheer, which were
both held at the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) Club in Damansara Heights. The New
Years Eve Dinner & Dance was organised at Simply Mels in Bangsar South. In 2014, the
monthly Family Lunch was held on the last Sunday of January, February and March 2014
respectively, albeit at a moderate success. As part of our social responsibility initiatives, we
organised the Sign For Hope Pray for MH370 banner during the Family Lunch in March
2014. Members and friends wrote messages to support the search and rescue efforts, and the
country as a whole. Thank you, Janice Monteiro-Lewis for the poignant idea!
With the resignation of our Hon. General Secretary, Joseph De Souza or Boni, the General
Committee (GC) has appointed our 2nd Vice President, Gerald Lee to act as the acting Hon.
Secretary until the next Annual General Meeting (AGM). We are proposing to hold our AGM
sometime in August or September 2014, which most likely will be held at the RCS. See you
there!
We have come full circle from when we were without a clubhouse pre-1953, where the
Presidents, Dr. J. S. Goonting, clinic served as the Associations address and so it is now too.
However, on the hindsight, SAFTEA is now an owner of a valuable piece of land. This bodes
well for SAFTEA and the future is certainly bright. With some careful thought and prudence,
we may see a new clubhouse for SAFTEA in the foreseeable future.
We welcome your thoughts and suggestions, which can be emailed to
safteurasian@gmail.com or via snail mail to P. O. Box 10223, 55100 Kuala Lumpur.
Until then, in the service of the Eurasians and members of SAFTEA, I remain,
Sheila De Costa

A Note

from Gerald M Lee

Vice President 2 & Acting Honorary General Secretary

Foremost, thank you Members for the privilege and honour for being in the Committee and serving SAFTEA for 2013/14.
2013 was a unique year for SAFTEA; we lost the right to occupy No.167 Jalan Pudu but by the grace of God, SAFTEA was
given a piece of land in Bangsar, a jewel, which most of you have seen. For the first time, we are now a Landlord of this piece
of land, and I gather it is worth more than RM4 million. This presents us with several options and at the end of this tunnel,
I foresee a building with SAFTEA in lights. This is what we all have been waiting for and it will materialise in good time.
After our Last Hurrah celebrations at 167 Jalan Pudu, we were faced with the daunting task of packing and vacating in
a short time. Derek Surin took a positive role in driving this daunting task forward and to closure. Decisions were taken
and a great deal was done with help from Willie Nunis in particular. Our president, Ms Sheila De Costa cleared a large
room in her office in Kajang for SAFTEA to store documents, files and other stuff of value.
As we are now without a home, homeless should I say, the GC decided that events must go on as far as possible for
members to meet, chat, dine and party over a couple of drinks. Maureen Sibert and Elaine Especkerman took the lead
to organise the monthly Family Lunch and Senior Citizens High Tea at the Royal Commonwealth Club at Damansara
Heights, Kuala Lumpur. Response has been encouraging and our target is break-even. The ever-Energetic Sisters,
Maureen and Elaine have done well and done SAFTEA proud.
Members who have missed these events are encouraged to come and participate. I assure you that you will enjoy
the music, food, dance, drinks and fun. We had our Christmas Cheer event in December and once again the Energetic
Sisters disappointed no one. Dont deprive yourself of the upcoming events. See you there!
Boni De Souza, the Legend of SAFTEA, decided to hang up his hat in July 2013 after serving SAFTEA for 47 years. His
long service and dedication is unparalleled and his rich knowledge is quite amazing. Ask him anything, and before you
complete the sentence, he is out with the details in chronological order. No wonder Boni is called the SAFTEA walking
dictionary. SAFTEA organised a celebration for Boni where we all expressed our appreciation and our President, Sheila
De Costa presented a gift to Boni (a good one I gather).
I was tasked by our President to fill his shoes. Believe me it is an uphill task, but with support from Boni it is
surmountable. Members do bear with me.
I take this opportunity to thank the Members for their support and our President and the General Committee for their
commitment and supporting my endeavours. I must add that I do enjoy being a member of the Team and I look forward
to a great 2014.
Cheers!

A journey of a
thousand miles
begins with a
single step

On 16 August 2013, more than 40 SAFTEA members and friends

attended the mediation between SAFTEA and UDA, which was
held at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.

On 23 August 2013, UDAs solicitors responded and the date

for vacation of the Clubhouse was set for 8 October 2013.
On 23 October 2013, representatives from both UDA and
SAFTEA gathered at the Clubhouse where the signing of
the agreement took place. The Title and Memorandum of
Transfer for the piece of land in Bangsar Utama with an area of
approximately 9,000 square feet, which is currently valued at
over RM4 million, was handed over to SAFTEA.
3

The land is currently being rented out to a restaurant owner

and this has provided SAFTEA with income to continue
its activities. Currently, events are being held at the Royal
Commonwealth Club in Damansara Heights and this is to
ensure that members can still meet regularly. SAFTEA is also
reviewing several proposals pertaining to building of the new
clubhouse and members will be kept updated on any new
developments. Meanwhile, there are plans to hold more fundraising activities and recruitment of new members. Members
will be duly notified of such events and it is our fervent hope
that members will be supportive of these efforts.

Every new beginning comes from

To commemorate this milestone in SAFTEAs history,

LOOKING FORWARD, THE LAST HURRAH was the last
major event, which was held at the Clubhouse in Jalan Pudu.
The overwhelming turnout saw almost 300 members and
friends indulged in the gastronomical delights of Eurasian/
Portuguese cuisine. A myriad of musical performances,
predominantly Eurasian bands entertained the guests. Music
ranged from Golden Oldies, Rock & Roll to Heavy Metal and
even a few Joget numbers. Winds of Change, Mixed Tones,
Rhythm Nation and Kaya (who were the Winners of the Youth
Expression 2013 competition) went all out to keep guests on
the dance floor all night long.
It was indeed a melting pot of the older and younger generations,
coming together to bid Adieu to our beloved Clubhouse. The
event also kick-started the fund raising for SAFTEAs new
clubhouse. With each Ringgit collected we are a step closer
to realising our dream of finally having our very own premises.
Information for how to donate towards the new building fund is

New Years Eve Party

Organising Committee

The affable Arnold kept everyone

amused with his antics.

Joan M. Marbeck with Emily Lee all set to usher in

the New Year

The endearing Winds of Change kept guests on the

dance floor throughout the night.

After some very busy days of clearing and shifting the Associations precious possessions accumulated over 90 years before the Club was
officially handed over to UDA, the President and General Committee Members decided that despite us no longer having our Clubhouse to
function and carry out our usual activities, we should make a firm resolution to continue organising the prominent festivities of Christmas and
New Years Eve to end 2013 on a happy and positive note.
As our President, Sheila de Costa and I were keen to scout and get to know restaurants run by Eurasian cooks and give them prominence
and the opportunity to prove their worth, Simply Mels was chosen as the venue for the SAFTEA New Years Eve Dinner and Dance 2013,
which was held on 31 December 2013.
A total of 80 members and friends helped themselves to the Eurasian Buffet Dinner prepared by Melba Nunis Victor.
The Winds of Change, one of Safteas regular bands, provided us with exquisite music to listen and dance to.
Arnold Monteiro was a super Master of Ceremonies who kept us roaring with laughter and in stitches. A special note of thanks to Arnold for
also providing most of the Lucky Draw prizes. Cheryl Victor decorated the restaurant to give us that Christmas feel and kept the waiters
and waitresses in check to see if everyone was comfortable and happy with food and drinks.
A note of appreciation to the Organising Committee, to persons who contributed their time and money, and to all who made
this occasion a success of the last of SAFTEAs 2013 joyous activity. My special thanks to Arnold and Sheila, whose help
and assistance I could not have done without. To Mel and Cheryl for providing us the venue and the great catering. Last but
by no means least, The Winds of Change for the superb rendition of music, which Eurasians and friends could balah to.

Family Lunches

Theres a certain charm about SAFTEAs Sunday Family Lunches or

Curry Lunches. A tradition, which has been kept alive throughout
all these years. Gathering members, family and friends for a little
quality time, these Sunday meetings have always been a great time
with an abundance of delicious food and lively music performances
for both the young at heart and the young to enjoy.

The Ladies Committee, chaired by Maureen Sibert was responsible for

rolling out the Family Lunches throughout 2013 without fail. These lunches
were held every last Sunday of each month at our clubhouse in Jalan Pudu
until we had to vacate in October.
We managed to find an alternative hall at the Royal Commonwealth Society
in Damansara Heights, Kuala Lumpur and the lunches have been held
there since November 2013. Response to the lunches have been good
and everyone is slowly but surely getting used to the idea of meeting up
at a different venue until the new clubhouse. As they say, It takes two to
tango!

Maureen Sibert with regulars Edwin Gasper, Carl Goonting and Cyril.

The Committee wishes to convey its deepest gratitude to Boni, Willie, Yap
Tee Loy, Alex, Derrick and Edwin, for making the load a lot lighter. A
big thank you also goes out to the Ladies Committee members, namely
Elaine, Mary and Yvette for all their invaluable help. Dato Lawrence Lim,
Madam President, James Monteiro, Gerald Lee and Darren Duarte
regularly donate prizes for the Raffle Draws and their contributions are
indeed priceless.

The golden voice of

Sarah Jackson.

Just as food nourishes the body so does music nourish the soul. At every
Family Lunch a host of bands are set on entertaining guests with their nonstop repertoire of music. Winds of Change, Stairways and Crystal Notes
keep guests dancing and swaying to fantastic dance music ranging from
the 60s all the way to current hits.

Shall we dance?

Belinda and Ann are two individuals who have done a great job of bringing
in the crowd at each event. So, mark your calendars folks and come join
in the fun and merriment of the Sunday Family Lunches. Better still, bring
your family and friends and get yourself acquainted with the many exciting
facets of Eurasian culture, food and music.

Family Lunches

As an Association, which embraces social responsibilities

initiatives, the 27 March 2014 Family Lunch was dedicated
to the passengers and crew of the missing MH370 aircraft.
A Sign For Hope - Pray for MH370 banner was specially
created for members and friends to pen down their messages
in support of the search and rescue efforts.

Our President, Sheila De Costa in her opening address took a

moment to inform guests and encouraged them to step up and jot
down their messages. She then led a prayer for the safety of those
on board the ill-fated flight. The afternoon continued with guests
tucking into the lunch and tea buffet delights while the bands kept
the enthusiastic crowd on the dance floor with their uptempo dance
tunes.

SAFTEAs Darts Team actively participated in the Interclub Darts Tournament, which
was held from October 2013 to January 2014. The enthusiastic team members made
up of Bala, CS, Jr., Kevin Shah, Neil Shortt, Steven Vijay and Selva went all out to
prove their prowess with keen hand-eye coordination and tactics.
The SAFTEA team participated in the tournament in October 2013 and managed
to compete in the last 16 but lost. They then went on to The Kulim Club Darts
Tournament in November 2013, but also lost. In December 2013, the team battled
out at the Royal Port Dickson Yacht Club and won in all the preliminary rounds. They
went on to play in the finals against Kelab Aman but lost 7-5. The team won a cash
prize of RM1,500.00
In January 2014, K Kelab organised their Darts Tournament in Taman Melawati but
unfortunately, SAFTEAs team lost again. All entrance fees for the tournaments were
paid by the Darts Section. We hope to participate in more upcoming tournaments and
team members continue to hone their skills at this fun yet challenging sport.
