The Scarlian
Volume 60 June 2014
Good News
As you all know I have met a new lady Sandra Dawson
and we have now been together for 7 months. At the
end of May I asked her to marry me and she did me the
great honour of saying yes. We are hoping to get
married in September next year either in Retford or
Lincoln. As most of you have met her you will know
what a lovely lady she is. As you will appreciate I feel I
am the luckiest man in the world and I am a very very
happy man. We are having a celebratory drink or two at
SSCC on 12
th
July. Everyone in the village including
people who have just moved in will be very welcome to
join us and to have the first drink on us.
Any profits on drinks from then on will go to St Helena fund.

Jay Dog

On Monday 12th May our best friend and buddy Jay Dog
went to sleep, many people will know him from being in
Terry's van keeping him company in the early years of his
life and if you approached the van you did at your peril
until the door was opened then he would fuss you to
death. He decided a few years ago he didn't want to go in
the van any more and stayed at home sleeping a lot. But
when we got Susie he perked up quite a lot she gave him
a new lease of life but after 18 1/2 years he had had
enough but will never be forgotten he's buried next to
the summerhouse so still near to Terry - Carol

A New Village Treasure
Sandra who lives with her four teenage children, Josh, Luke, Carys and Anna at Meadow
Edge must be a woman of immense energy. As if her children and work (shes a nurse)
was not enough she is also a Lives First Responder. This is a charity, which trains
people who are willing to be on call, attend emergencies and provide medical support until
the ambulance gets there. In a rural area these folk, Sandra included, save lives. If you
need an ambulance the odds are you will see Sandra first. Oh and by the way in her spare
time she is taking the advanced motorcycle test!

Hello,
2
We are the Clay family, Ann, Roger, William & Richard. We moved in to Church View Barn
in July 2013, so we are relatively new to the village. We have two dogs, Charlie and Rosie,
both Cocker Spaniels. Charlie is our old boy about 13 yrs old and Rosie is our new rescue
dog from Collingham Dog Rescue aged about 5 yrs.
Our interests are classic cars, Roger has restored a 1965 VW Split Screen camper, which
is his pride and joy and takes first place in the family hierarchy.
Will is studying at Derby University and Richard is studying at Newark College, we have
been in the village nearly a year and we are certainly enjoying South Scarle.
Ann & Roger.

Hmm (from the editor) are these the same folks?

Running a great Pub night in
slightly disreputable company.

From the Chair
A little light humour with a serious message
I recently read this quote: -I was out driving one night and it was dark, I mistakenly took a large
brown box on the side of the road for a deer, I swerved at the last moment and even though it
turned out not to be a deer I still nailed the son of a bitch
Should have gone to Specsavers? Maybe, but humour aside things like this happen.
To give you another scenario regarding speed I was out on my motorbike a few weeks ago about
6.00am on a Sunday morning enjoying a peaceful ride out. I had just crested a rise in the road
when a rather large deer [not a cardboard box] burst through the hedge on the right hand side of
the road. As it ran across in front of me I swerved to the right to avoid hitting it, only to be
confronted by two more following it, whereupon I had the bike on its nose with the back wheel in
the air. Had I been going more slowly the scenario would have been completely different. Had I
been going any faster, well who knows, venison and Honda for dinner, probably in a hospital bed
What Im getting at in a humorous way is the need for restraint at times when driving especially in
villages like South Scarle, our village.
Im not on a soapbox, pointing a finger or slapping anyones legs, what I am doing is merely asking
for a little cooperation and consideration.
It was raised at our last Parish meeting about cars travelling at unreasonable speeds along the
entire length of Main St and by that I mean both sides of the Church
Now I know we have vehicles who use the village as a cut through and we are, to a large extent,
unable to control this, however my appeal is to the residents of South Scarle to consider others,
especially children playing, people walking dogs, and people in general out walking, especially now
we are getting lighter nights.
Please show due consideration and abide by the speed limit or less should the conditions require
it.
We all enjoy living in a relatively quiet, peaceful and safe village, lets try and keep it that way.
Thank you
David Clarke

From the Horses mouth
Hi Scarlians, Maximus here. I'm the big handsome cob you
may have seen out and about.
March was a dark month for us Newton's with the loss of my
beloved stable mate Mayfly. I whinnied for three days and then
fell into a deep depression.
I heard the words " Shetland" and "borrow" a couple of times
but after three weeks a young chap called Bounty turned up in
the yard. My mum said he had come for a brief stay to "learn some manners" as he had
ideas above his station. Of course I wasnt going to let a young thoroughbred upstart
get the better of me even if he had been a racehorse in his former life!!
I quickly established who was in charge with a few bites, a show of my back hooves
and the odd charge or two! It has clearly served its purpose because he is now much
more polite. I am told he is here to stay and I don't really mind, although given a choice
a nice little filly would have gone down well! I think we will get on fine, just as long as he
doesnt keep on about the time he ran in the 2.20 at Southwell...
Of course I could tell him my story of the lemon-pepper chicken but perhaps I will tell you another time.

Rodeo Jo Comes to Town.

Stetsons, Cowboy boots and oversized belt
buckles were in prominence when Rodeo Jo
came to town in May for an evening of Country
music covering all the classic artists.

The gig was a sell out
and everyone entered into the spirit. Jo was kind enough to give some
Scarlians the spotlight for a song or two. Terry Jacklin, Pete Severn, Pam
Law and Blaise Thomas all performed for us but the limelight was well and
truly stolen by Roger Daviss granddaughter.
Jo performed right up to midnight and by the end we were all singing
along and waving our hands in the air. An absolutely fantastic night all
round. Jo has asked to play the SSCC again next year so look out for the date in due course.

Our thanks go to Blaise Thomas for arranging the visit of Jo.

Tractor Run 1
st
June 2014
The Annual Tractor run departed from Moorwood Farm at 10-15 a.m. on the 1
st
of June. A
spectacle well worth seeing. If you missed this one dont miss it next year. 42 veteran/vintage or
simply interesting tractors set off on a 36-mile journey. Their drivers and the spectators were
fuelled with bacon butties courtesy of Elaine and Lynn and refreshed with tea and coffee from our
tea ladies Betty, Anita and Mel. What a team!
Vicki was a stalwart on the raffle. Judy was in charge of booking in the tractors, Michael Hart
planned the route and Linda & Dave Truman marshalled the whole event. We must also thank
Phillip and Stephen for providing Moorwood Farm as a venue.
Almost last but by no means least thank you to the bakers who provide the amazing cakes for the
returning drivers and those who came to see them home. I am coming to believe that the next time
The Great British Bake Off pitches its tents it should be here. South Scarle really does cake.
Nearly last, the event raised 683 for the Church Fabric Fund.
Really last (though she will be cross with me) Florence deserves credit for her role in making this
event happen.

POND LIFE AT THE RETREAT

Ive had this idea. The most terrifying sentence in the English language.
It transpires she wants a pond. Oh, well, thats OK -- a little pond, a few goldfish, bit of
plankton, whatever
No, a WILDLIFE pond. Ah. How big do you want it? Oh, not that big, you know, big
enough for an island that ducks and geese can visit on their way to wherever theyre
going.
How deep do you envisage it being? Well, well have to hit the water table, so at least
that deep.
I put the shovel to one side and enlist Terry and a mechanical digger. Three days pass.
For the full extent of the resulting earthworks, I refer you to the accompanying photo.
So far, its been likened to a quarry, the surface of the moon, and a bomb crater. We
fondly imagine that, over time, plants will grow, exotic amphibians will take up residence
and migratory birds will honour us with seasonal visits. All we need before all that is
WATER. Frankly a pond is nothing without it. More of a hole in the ground.
In fact, there is SOME water, and -
wishful thinking or not - we do think
the level is rising gradually. Rudi
has already claimed it as his own
foot/leg bath, and I saw a sparrow
on a pile of rubble yesterday. And,
miraculously, now weve reached
June, everything is busting out all
over - including meadow
geraniums, buttercups, thyme,
poppies and harebells.
We promise were not fracking. Ollie
and Kate

Happy Returns
Better late than never. The cuckoos are back. I heard them first on the 4
th
of May just when I was
beginning to resign myself to another spring without them. By now I bet you have all heard them.
They seem to have cranked up the volume to compensate for last years silence.
Did you notice how late the Ash trees were? They seemed to be a full month behind the oaks
although the drought this predicts (according to folk lore) does not seem to be arriving yet.
A pair of Magpies are nesting somewhere in the region of Amos Lane. These are the first Ive seen
for a number of years. I know they are rather the thugs of the bird world but I was still glad to see
them.

There will be an Angel Stall, refreshments, raffle, and live

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this Scarlian. Our diversity is what makes
us such a strong community. I am dotty about this village and I hope you will become so
too. The two extra pages arose from a village meeting when it was clear we could not (any
of us) give full directions to all the houses in the village. I hope you find them useful
