I know its clich to say the summer went fast, but boy howdy, did it go fast. My daughter is startng 3 rd grade on the 15 th . The 20 th Annual CIPA EVVY awards ban- quet is less than two weeks away. This year marks my 4 th year on the CIPA board. Its been quite a journey, working to help make CIPA the best publishing group in Colorado! We changed things up a bit this yearwe used to run the EVVYs from October through March with the award banquet in May. We decided to see what would happen if we ran the contest between March and May, with the banquet in Au- gust. All I can say is WOW! Our former highest ever category entries was 206 in 2006. This year we increased that by 25%! We had 278 category entries! That means that the competton has been stfbut all very, very good. The books have been excellent overall. Im especial- ly pleased to note that most of the books have publishing companies atached to them. This means that our indie authors are getng smart! Instead of publishing under their names, they create a publish- ing entty and publish under that. It legit- mizes all the hard work that we all do as indie authors and publishers! I encourage all the fnalists to come to the CIPA EVVY awards banquet this year. It promises to be a lot of funand theres been a huge amount of diligent work to make sure that contest has run smoothly! Thats what publishing is real- ly all aboutdiligence! We need to make sure our books are the best possible and can compete in the marketplace! 2 Colorado Independent Publishers Associaton CIPA Webinar Summer Series CIPA is excited to welcome Brian Jud as our speaker for our September meetng. Brian is the author of How to Make Real Money Selling Books, a complete resource for selling books in bulk to non-traditonal markets. He is also the Executve Direc- tor of APSS, The Associaton of Publishers for Special Sales. As a lead-in to his live CIPA presentaton in September, Brian taught 3 live webinars this summer for CIPA members. Get a jump start on learning how to sell your book by the case to non -traditonal buyers! In these 3 classes, Brian will take you step- by-step through the process of prospectng for potental buy- ers, writng the proposal, and negotatng the special sale of your book. Cost: Members $25 for all 3 webinars (must sign in to receive member pricing) Non-Members $37 for all 3 webinars The webinars were recorded and the replays are immediately available to you afer you register. Here's what you'll learn: The process for selling books to non-retail, non-bookstore buyers is totally diferent from selling to the trade. In special sales, the objectve is to make large-quantty, non-returnable sales to professional buyers, perhaps in corporatons, associa- tons or schools. There are three general steps in the typical sales process, and they apply to both fcton and nonfcton for adults and children. In these 3, 90-minute webinars, Brian Jud will describe this process, complete with examples, contact informaton and handouts with even more descriptve infor- maton. Webinar #1: Prospectng I'll begin the series with a general overview of special-sales marketng and how it difers from selling to the trade. Then I'll show how to canvass target seg- ments to fnd potental buyers. These could be marketng peo- ple, C-level executves, HR managers, sales managers, pro- spects at associatons, directors of departments of educaton and buyers at government agencies and the armed forces. They could also be buyers at discount stores, warehouse clubs, air- port stores and other retailers. Webinar #2: Creatng the proposal and making the presenta- ton Next, your members should prepare plans and budgets describing how their books will most cost-efectvely reach the stated objectves. I will show how to create a proposal and pre- sent it to the decision makers. Webinar #3: Negotatng the sale Rarely is the inital proposal accepted in totality. I will show how to negotate proftably, closing the sale without using high-pressure tactcs. Then once the order is placed, your members must track it closely to make sure the correct books are shipped at the right tme in the right quantty. Problems registering? Email admin@cipacatalog.com

Deadline is Friday 8/15. Charging Sales Tax for Your Book Should you charge sales tax for your book? By Mary Walewski My email always brings me questons that evolve into a re- search project and a blog post! Do you know how to handle sales tax for when we sell books? Each community is diferent. Many require a business license. Am I required to have a business license for each com- munity where I sell a book and pay them their tax, the state theirs, etc.? A google search of How much sales tax do I charge brought up some great resources, the best being Etsys Everything You Need to Know About Sales Tax and The Simple But Sweet Guide To Charging Sales Tax. Not sure what your sales tax is in your town. Heres a handy calculator by zip code. Botom line: You need to know the sales tax regulatons in your state. I didnt know is not a valid excuse according to the tax collectors. Some states just want you to charge sales tax for books sold to customers within your state. (This includes online sales.) Some states and cites require a business license and/or a sales tax license. Most states allow you to collect sales tax at your local rate, rather than your buyers local rate. Once youve collected the sales tax, its your responsibility to pay the tax. Naturally, each state does that in a diferent way, too. Check your states department of revenue website for the most up-to-date info. For my friends here in Colorado, I googled How much sales tax do I charge in Colorado and landed on the Dept of Revenues sales tax collecton page.
