Presidents Letter
I predict a bright future for CIPA members. This is going to be a great year as we continue to build on all the exciting activities CIPA initiated this past year.

of the rapid changes in the publishing industry. The incredible expansion of ebook sales in a very short time is just one example of these changes. Lets briefly explore a few of the programs CIPA will continue to expand and improve upon in the coming year. CIPA College Expansion In addition to the live CIPA College classes that will be offered starting in September, downloadable versions of previous classes are being made available online. Several are already available for purchase. And webinars will likely be offered as well. Regular Communications with Members The weekly e-Blast and monthly Signatures will continue year round to offer timely information to the membership. Promotion of Award-winning e-Books One of the great new avenues for promoting CIPAs award-winning authors is the pioneering Library e-Book Partnership program. This program enables CIPA members to promote their e-books to a much wider audience. Online Catalog All CIPA members are able to post their books in the new online catalog. Many authors have already taken advantage of this opportunity. With all our dedicated and accomplished members working together to help each other learn and grow in the independent publishing business, our future truly does look bright! I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during the coming CIPA year.

Dan Miller

The organization is blessed to have the assistance of an energetic, talented, and dedicated new board, and of committee chairs and members who offer the kind of experience we need to move the organization forward. We will all benefit from the collective wisdom of those who are continuing on the board: Mike Daniels as CIPA ELF President, Joyce Miller as Board Secretary, Nancy Mills as Immediate Past President, Herb Tabak as Treasurer, Mary Walewski as Marketing/PR Chair, and Terri Wolf as Director. And we are gaining fresh new insights, perspectives, skills, and talents from our new board members: Cynthia Aschenbrenner serving as Education Chair and YAL Director, Barbara J. Butler serving as Membership Chair, Brian Montgomery serving as Trade Show Chair, Dr. Patricia Ross serving as Program Chair, and Brian Schwartz serving as Vice President. Since CIPA has a membership with diverse needs and a multitude of challenges, we will continue to offer diversity in our programming and creation of resources. In the coming year, we will focus on helping our members understand and determine how best to take advantage

CIPA Helping Those In Need

As we all know, Joplin, Missouri is still recovering from a devastating tornado. It will be a long time before the city is restored. For years, CIPA has donated books to local library districts. To date, the dollar amount totals well into the tens of thousands. Now it's time for us to step up and help this Midwestern city rebuild their resources. The Joplin schools have lost all their books and are soliciting books for K-12 students and teacher resource books. The high school is completely destroyed. They're looking for fiction or nonfiction, and any books that they can't use will be given to the local National Guard unit. If you have books they could use, even used books, or know anyone who might be interested, please box them up and send them by Media Mail to: Deb Marshall, 1203 Spartina Drive, Florissant, MO 63031.

IBPA Scholarship Winner Tells All

CIPA member, Seth Chernoff was afforded the opportunity to attend IPBA Publishing University before BookExpo America (BEA) in New York City in June; in part due to a tuition scholarship from IBPA and CIPA. According to Seth, the event proved to be incredibly valuable. As with any conference, there were seminars on a wide range of subjects, particularly the future of the publishing industry, digital books, and a lot of general lectures relating to book marketing, sales, and promotion. And, he found plenty of like-minded authors to network with. Many of the breakout session lecture topics were elementary, geared toward the selfpublished author, and people new to the field of publishing.

MPIBA
The Mountains & Plains Independent Booksellers Association (MPIBA) is a nonprofit trade association of independent booksellers, book wholesalers, publishers and other industry professionals located throughout the Rocky Mountain region. For more information on the benefits of membership, visit the MPIBA website.

Many of the speakers were experts in their field, and he was particularly impressed with the Ask The Experts session where attendees could sign up for 15 minutes of dedicated and uninterrupted time with any of the speakers. David connected with several industry leaders who gave him incredible personalized feedback on his books, marketing strategies, and so much more. Seths main priority for attending the event was to sign on with a new book distributor. After meeting a few that didnt quite fit his business model, he finally connected with the president of MidPoint Distribution who was impressed with Seths book and their impressive sales/downloads. They signed with MidPoint and are now prepared to release book two in the Manual For Living series in September. He highly recommends submitting your application for scholarship next year (watch for news from CIPA) and going to the event as it was well orchestrated, incredibly rewarding, and a lot of fun. Seth David Chernoff is the owner of Spirit Scope Publishing, located in Boulder, Colorado, and the author of two of the books in the Manual For Living collection. Visit his web page. Read the full story of his experience on the CIPA Bookshelf Blog.
