APPROACHING INDIAN LITERATURE IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION
The purpose of this course is to familiarize the researcher with the key issues, statements and
debates regarding Indian literature and equip her with significant concepts, theories and ideas
necessary for research. Recommended texts and portions from important books are indicated
below each unit. Superisors are free to add more texts whereer necessary. !hereer entire texts
are indicated, the superisor can prescribe portions from it.
The emphasis is on proiding historical and sociological perspectie to the study of Indian
literature. The idea that Indian literature, like Indian society, is culturally rich, heterogeneous and
bafflingly complex underlies constitution of this course.
