Iowa State fell to No. 20 Kansas State last weekend, 32-28 in Jack Trice Stadium. Iowa State leads the season Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series competition at 2-0 after a 2-1 win in soccer on Sept. 5. Iowa leads the all-time series vs. Iowa State at 40-21, but the Cyclones have won nine of the last 16 games in the series. Iowa won last years meeting in Ames, 27-21. Iowa led 21-0 at halftime, but the Cyclones made it close with three TD catches from Quenton Bundrage. Bundrage had seven catches for 146 yards and three TDs in the game. Bundrage, ISUs leading receiver in 2013 (48 catches, 676 yards, 9 TDs), had his junior season ended on the fourth play of the 2014 season when he tore his ACL vs. North Dakota State in the season-opener. The last time the two teams met in Iowa City (2012), the Cyclones came away with a 9-6 victory. LB Jake Knott saved the game with an interception on Iowas nal drive. Head coach Paul Rhoads is in his sixth season as the Cyclone leader with a career record of 27- 38. Hes led the Cyclones to three bowl games (2009 Insight Bowl, 2011 Pinstripe Bowl, 2012 Liberty Bowl) in his rst ve seasons. Rhoads has recorded a win over a ranked team in three of the last four seasons and has defeated a league opponent on the road in each of his rst ve seasons, only the second coach in ISU history to achieve the feat. Iowa State set an all-time attendance record last season of 55,361 with three sellouts. ISU has sold over 40,000 season tickets for the third-straight season. Over 50,000 fans have attended a game in Jack Trice Stadium for a school-record 21-straight games. ISU sold-out its rst two games of the season (North Dakota State; Kansas State). The Cyclones fell just short of upsetting No. 20 Kansas State on Saturday, falling 32-28. ISU was down 13-0 in the rst quarter, giving up 47 unanswered points dating back to the season-opener vs. North Dakota State. The Cyclones then responded with 28-straight points to go ahead 28-13. ISU has scored 28 of its 42 season points in the second quarter. Two more freshmen (Jake Campos, Allen Lazard) received their rst starts in the game, giving the Cyclones a total of four freshmen who have made starts this season (Kamari Cotton-Moya and Alton Meeks). Lazard is the rst Cyclone true freshman on offense to start a game since Josh Lenz in 2009. Lazard scored his rst career TD on a 29-yard reverse pass from WR Jarvis West. ISU led at the half 28-20, as the Cyclones fell to 21-4 in the Paul Rhoads era when leading at the break. ISUs 28 points in the rst half was the most by the Cyclones in the opening period since scoring 38 at Kansas in 2012. KANSAS STATE RECAP Iowa State lost yet another heartbreaker on Saturday, falling to No. 20 Kansas State, 32-28. After falling down 13-0, the Cyclone offense broke out with 28-straight points and led at the break 28-20. After a scoreless third quarter, KSU cut the gap to 28-26 after a Charles Jones TD run. The Cyclones had a chance to run the clock down, but failed on a 3rd-and-1 at mideld to force a punt after KSU lost all of its timeouts. The Wildcats then scored on a Jake Waters eight-yard run to go up 32-28 with 1:31 left in the game. ISU had one nal chance, but turned the ball over on downs with :27 seconds left at mideld. There were a bunch of bright spots for ISU, but none brighter than senior WR Jarvis West. West caught a 17-yard TD pass, returned a punt 82 yards for a TD and tossed a TD pass for 29 yards to Allen Lazard, all in the rst half. West ended the game with a career-high eight catches for 75 yards. West became just the third player in FBS or FCS since 1998 to record a TD catch, TD pass and punt return for a TD in a game. The last player to do it was Randall Cobb (Kentucky) vs. Western Kentucky in 2010. Wests 82-yard punt return was the ninth longest in school history and ISUs rst since Josh Lenz did it in 2010. QB Sam Richardson ran for 32 yards and completed 21-of-30 passes for 185 yards in the game. Richardson had a stretch of 14-straight completions during the game, a new career high. True freshman WR Allen Lazard caught three passes for 42 yards, including his rst career TD on a 29-yard strike from Jarvis West. Jevohn Miller led the Cyclones in tackles with 11. Lazard has four catches for 90 yards, tying for the team lead in receiving yards. The two longest plays from scrimmage on the season are by Lazard: 48-yard catch vs. North Dakota State and a 29-yard TD catch vs. Kansas State, his rst career TD. Richardson has 20 career TD passes, two shy of cracking ISUs career record chart. He is completing a career-best 67.2 percent of his passes this season (41-61) and leads the team in rushing with 90 yards. Richardson completed a career-best 14-straight passes vs. Kansas State. Hes had ve games of 50 or more yards rushing in his career. JEVOHN MILLER LEADING THE DEFENSE Senior LB Jevohn Miller has been outstanding in the rst two games of the season for the Cyclones. He has big shoes to ll as the leader of the linebacker corps. The Cyclones have produced four linebackers who have earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors ve times since 2009: Jesse Smith, Jake Knott, A.J. Klein and Jeremiah George. Miller leads the team, ranks second in the Big 12 and ranks 42nd nationally in tackles per game at 10.0. Bray was ISUs defensive end coach from 2009-13, tutoring multiple defensive ends to All-Big 12 recognition. Iowa State will honor Brays legacy by adorning a patch on their helmets of his initials CB throughout the entire season. ISU DE Cory Morrissey, who earned All-Big 12 honors in 2013 under Brays leadership, changed his uniform number to 58 in honor of Bray, who wore the same number in his outstanding career at Pittsburgh. DRAKE FERCH AND BEN BOESEN AWARDED SCHOLARSHIPS Coach Rhoads placed senior Drake Ferch (N/LB) and junior Ben Boesen (TE) on scholarship at the end of fall camp.
