issued
the war with
his first call for volunteers to serve
Spain which had been declared
the patriotism and fervor of the people of
189S,
Rhode Island were aroused, ami innnediate steps were taken
toward forming a regiment to send to the " h'ont."
Kecriiitins offices were opened in the cities of I'rovitlence, Woon-
socket, Newport, and I'awtncket, ami as fast as men were enlisted they
were sent to Camp Elisha Dyer, which li.id been opened on May 2, at
Ouonset Point, North Kingstown, under connuand of Lieutenant-Colonel
Henry l). Rose, of the Rhode Island Militia. It took but a very short
lime to recruit the new regiment up to 12 companies of 77 men each,
and on the 26th of May a start was made lor Camp Alger, \'a.
The regiment, under conmiancl of Colonel Clias. \V. Abbot, paraded through
Providence on the afternoon of the 26th, and on every hand was met with the
greatest enthusiasm, the people vying with each other in their efifiirts to give a
fitting farewell to the noble sons of the state who had Ijeen so quick to
respond
to their country's call. At same day, the regiment embarked on
6.30 i\ M. of the
the steamer J?/iijde Island, Jersey City, N. J., at 6.10 A. Ji. on the
arriving in
following day. The transferring of the regiment from the boat to the cars took
but very little time, and at g.55 A. m. .mother start was made on the Baltimore
and Ohio railroad toward Washington. Philadelphia was passed at noon, P.alti-
more at 6 o'clock, and Washington was reached at .S o'clock I'. M. on the 27tli.
Here a delay of a short time occurred, and the train was side-tracked until
9.30, at which time it left tor )inm Loring, \'a., arriving there at 10.30 on the
1
morning of the 2Sth. From that time on, progress to Camp Alger was very slow,
the balance of the day and half of the night being consumed in moving
toward
camp, which was finally reached at halt an honr after midnight, the b.ilance of
the night being spent on the cars.
Before the regiment was able to pilch ils leiils in the morning, it was nece.s-
but
sary to clear the ground of trees and brush, which took consideralile time,
eventually the place was ])Ut into good shape, tents were pitched, and the regi-
ment settled down to its first experience in camp-life. Mnstering lor lust pay
took place on May 31.
for the ne.\t two weeks the time was consmned in the ordinary routine of
camp— drills, parades, and guard-mounting being kept up with great regularity.
The first break in the routine was luade on June 17, when the regiment was
ordered to Difficult Run, Fairfa.K comUy, Va., for a practice march. This place
was reached at 1:30 p. m. of the same day, and tents were pitched and a regular
camp opened, which lasted until llu- morning of the 19th, when, at 7 a. m. the
line of march w.is taken up ag.iin for a return to Camp Alger.
The march back
was a very hard one, taking all clay ,and evening, with no stops, and Camp .\lger
was reached at nndnight.
While the regiment was lying ,it Camp Alger, the second call for vohnUcrrs
was m.ade, and officers were sent back to Camp Klisha Dyer for llu- purpose
.i|
the nun were compelled to link arms and wade in the water neck-deep.
)n .Vugust 9 Comany C rejoine<l the regiment, when the march was resumed
(
toward Thoroughfare Gap. The roads were in a terrible condition, and the recent
rains had converted small creeks into raging torrents. The men were compelled
to undress to ford Broad Run. The hartl, almost incessant rains made life de-
cidedly uni)leasant for the officers and men of tlie regiment, and the arrival at
Thoroughfare (lap was in the midst of a drenching downpour, which kept up for
the ne.xt forty-eight hours. Camping place was reached at 2 p. M. of the 9th, and
tents were pitched nc.ir llie old l).ittlefield of Manassas, in a rye-field, in the
midst of mud and For almost two weeks the regiment remained at this
rain.
the ladies of the Red Cross Society, and the avidity with which they were con-
sumed testified to grateful appreciation of the kindness.
Baltimore, Md., was reached at i.io .\. M. on the 23rd of August, ^'ork,
