Atatimeofyearwhenourthoughtsareturningtofamily,holidaysandthestartofanewyearallthethingsthatuniteusandbringusjoyitisdiscouraging
thatsomanyeventsandissuesarecausingdivisionandhurt,andmakingmanystudentsfeelunwantedatthisgreatuniversity.Ithurtstoreaddisrespectful
andjustplainmeancommentsinsocialmedia.LastnightsCripmasparty,whichtheuniversitydidnotsanction,raisedmoreconcernsaboutthecampus
climate.Clemsonisbetterthanthis.
EveryoneisentitledtohisorherownopinionabouteventsinFerguson,StatenIslandandtheprotestralliesthatthoseeventshavespawned.Greatuniversities
arebuiltonthefreeexpressionandexplorationofideas.Butthefreeexpressionofopinionmustnotcrossthelineandbecomeharassmentorintimidation,just
asralliesandprotestmarchesmustnotcrossthelinetolawlessness.
Ourcorevalueshonesty,integrityandrespectmustbemorethanjustwords.Iplantohostaseriesofeventsinearly2015tofosterproductivediscussion
andunitythatincludesabroadsegmentofthecampusandIhopethatIcancountonyouractiveparticipation.
Inthemeantime,pleasebesupportiveofeachotherduringthisbusyandsometimesstressfulseason.
