Contents

• What is feedback and why is it

important?
Students should read the introductory

chapters of several text books to get

a good feel for this. It will be tested
on the exam!
• How do I analyse the impact of
feedback?
Main content of lectures.

Learning and
assessment
A main learning outcome at University is

students developing confidence to:

1.Learn independently.
2.Make their own judgements about quality
and accuracy of their work.
3.Be able to reflect on numerous forms of
input and feedback to improve.

What do I expect?
• Students should attend and be seated
ready to start on time.
Late arrivals will have to wait outside

re electure.

• Students should do about 5 hours

work per week outside lectures on
my part of ACS211.
Don’t complain if you are finding it

tough but not putting in the hours!

A good professional puts in as many

hours as are needed to stay on top of

their work.

Lecture notes

1.I will give you most but not all of the

content required for the
exam/assignments.
2.Some material you need to find and learn
for yourself and make your own
judgement about your competence.
3.The exam will be slightly different this
year and my part (parts 1,2 on previous
years) will have no choices. Answer
every question.

Assessment

• A 2 hour exam worth 60% of which I

do 40%.
• A 3 hour laboratory using MATLAB in
week 11 worth 20%. [Book your
own slot.]

Before next week

• Read the introductory chapters of at
least 2 recommended control text
books.
• Write a brief summary of why
feedback is important? Share these
on MOLE.
• Make sure you understand terms such
as feedback, summing junction,
open-loop, closed-loop, transference.
• Revise role and definition of transfer

Practice is essential
to gain

understanding
Students are always asking for more tutorial
questions.
1.The text books are full of excellent
questions and worked examples; if you
want more practise, use these!
2.The past exams are on the ACSE web site
for you to try. Many include answers.
3.There are some questions and tutorial
sheets embedded in the notes.
