Partial Product Method

2 Digit Divisor
1. Set up your problem as usual.
2. Draw a line to the right of the dividend.
!
! 21! 8 6 4
3. Think: what can be multiplied by 22 that comes close to 864?
• Use compatible or friendly numbers (20 x 40 = 800).
• Multiply the divisor by the friendly number.
• Write the product under the dividend.
• Write the two factors to the right of the line.
• Subtract the product from the dividend.
! !
! 21! 8 6 4
! -8 4 0! 21 x 40 = 840!
! 2 4!

4. Think: what can be multiplied by 20 that comes close to 24?
• Use compatible or friendly numbers (20 x 1 = 24).
• Multiply the divisor by the friendly number.
• Write the product under the dividend.
• Write the two factors to the right of the line.
• Subtract the product from the dividend.
• Because the difference is less than the divisor, it is the remainder.
!
! 21! 8 6 4
! -8 4 0! 21 x 40 = 840!
! 24
! ! -2 1! 21 x 1 = 21
! ! 3!

5. To find the product, add the factors that were multiplied by 21.
• The factors 40 and 1 were multiplied by 21.
• Add 40 + 1 = 41
• The quotient is 41r3

2 Digit Divisor

What if this is too hard?

1. Set up your problem as usual.

2. Draw a line to the right of the dividend.
3. Multiply the divisor by a number you know (like 10 or 100).
4. Keep going until the difference you get is less than the divisor.
!
! 21! 8 6 4
! -2 1 0 ! 21 x 10 = 210!
! !6 5 4
! -2 1 0 ! 21 x 10 = 210
! 444
! -2 1 0! 21 x 10 = 210
! 2 3 4!
! -2 1 0! 21 x 10 = 210
! ! 24
! ! -2 1! 21 x 1 = 21
! ! 3

5. Add all the factors that you multiplied 21.

6. 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 1 = 41.
7. The quotient is 41r3
