BANANA SLEEVES

INCREASING PRODUCTION AND

IMPROVING QUALITY
 Established in 1973 Plastnir is one
of the major producers of
polyethylene flexible packaging in
Israel.
 Apart from Banana Sleeves Plastnir
supplies packaging products both to
industry and the retail trade.
 Plastnir has ISO9002, HACCP and
BRC quality certification.
Our Products
•Plastnir is the major producer of Banana sleeves in
Israel Producing 80% of the sleeves used in Israel.
•Plastnir has an ongoing development program with
the growers. Each year results are analysed and new
types of sleeves are brought out each year.
WHY USE BANANA SLEEVES?

1. Sleeves provide protection from wind

rain hail and other elements.
2. Banana gets a better colour with the
use of sleeves.
3. Sleeves provide stable conditions
within the sleeve enabling the Banana
to “fill out” and reach higher grade
and quality.
WHY USE BANANA SLEEVES?
TYPES OF BANANA SLEEVES

Plastnir together with local

agronomists will advise you as to
which sleeve should be used for
particular climate and condition. We
will also help you to conduct
experiments to find the most suitable
sleeve for your needs.
TYPES OF SLEEVES (cont)

1. BLUE SLEEVE 20 MICRONS.

The basic sleeve is a blue sleeve of
20 microns thickness in various
degrees of opacity. The sleeve is thin
but strong and flexible and provides
adequate protection in most climates.
Types of Sleeves (cont)

2. Blue 40-60 Microns:

For harsher climates we provide thicker
sleeves normally at 40 microns. This
sleeve provides protection in harsher
climates and replaces the 100 micron
sleeves used in the past.
Types of Sleeves (cont)

Silver Sleeves:
This sleeve provides similar protection
to the blue sleeve but delays the pick
by approximately two weeks providing
flexibility in marketing.
HOW TO USE SLEEVES
 Immediately after
flowering, when banana
begins to turn up the
sleeve is placed on the
bunch in a way that
does not impair the
growth of the banana.
Calculation

The calculation is simple:

 Sleeves provide additional output of
approximately 10% and improve the quality.
 A 10% increase in output will provide 2-3 Kgs
more fruit / bunch.
 Depending on the price of the fruit the extra
yield will provide an income 4-10 times larger
than the cost of the sleeves.
 This is without taking into account the increase
in income from the improved quality of the fruit.
CONCLUSION
 Although they cost money Plastnir’s banana
sleeves provide quality bananas and higher
outputs.
 Each grower should use sleeves according
to climatic conditions, experience and aims.
 Twenty years of experience in the field
together with close cooperation with growers
and scientists insure that Plastnir will
provide you with the best sleeve for your
crop.
