a word: Goodbye

by pb Hill
for all i felt once for you,
for all the anger that i heard,
for all the sadness we created:
Goodbye isn't deep enough a word.
for all the sorrow we had inside,
for all the grief we chose to bear,
for all the empty longing we hid:
Goodbye just seems not to care.
for all the memories we leave behind,
for all the past we fought to create,
for all the injury we inflicted,
Goodbye isn't much of a fate.
for all the loneliness we face tomorrow,
for all the guilt for walking away,
for all the regret we swallow with smiles,
Goodbye is all that we can say?
forgetting the silence of love and life,
for hearing the wordy world's call,
forever's too long for hoping, today too near,
Goodbye. . .and that is all?
for all the final, finite, and finished fidelity,
from wishing and wanting and wondering why,
for all that's over and all the end,
in a frail word: Goodbye.
