Mt. Everest
 Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world! 
 It is about 8850 meters above sea‐level 
 Everest was formed about 60 million years ago 
 It was named after Sir George Everest in 1865, the British surveyor‐general of India. Once known 
as Peak 15 
 From as early as 1921, climbers had tried to reach Everest’s summit. By the time Edmund Hillary 
and Tenzing Norgay completed their successful expedition in 1953, at least 13 people had lost 
their lives attempting the climb. 
 Apa Sherpa has climbed Everest 12 times, which is the most ascents done by any one person.
