GRID VALUES: CHUCK CLOSE METHOD

OBJECTIVES:
 Show an understanding and awareness of the work of Chuck Close.

 Develop skills in enlarging a composition using a grid. Study proportion.

 Recognize values and create values using line, pattern and simulated textures.

 Develop Contrast through values.

MATERIALS:
 Assorted 15cm x 20cm (6in x 8in) photographs showing high contrast

 30cm x 46cm (12in x 18in) white drawing paper

 Pencils, rulers, erasers, scissors

 White, range of grey, black paper

 Sharpie Ultra Fine markers

 Sharpie fine point markers

WHAT TO DO:
 Using a digital camera, take a picture of yourself

 Bring the picture into Photoshop, size it to 15cm x 20cm (6in x 8in)

 Increase the contrasts, select Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast

 Create a mosaic of your image, select Filters > Textures > Patchwork

 Print your image; bring several different images to choose from

 Draw a grid on your white paper; each square should be 2.5cm (1 in)

 Draw a grid on your photo (roughly 1.3 cm or 0.5 in)

 Cut out many 2.5 cm (1 in) squares out of white, range of grey, black paper
 Concentrate on the value of a square in the photograph and replicate the value in the corresponding
square on your drawing. (Those who are most successful are able to “see” the value and not get lost in line
or object. In this way, it now became an exercise in seeing and perception.)
You are encouraged to make each grid a small “work of art”. Use Fine tip markers and Ultra fine tip

markers. (You may want to experiment on scrap paper)

 Create a variety of textures using line - develop some strong areas of contrast - some patterns will have

solid areas of black. Some areas will have a very faint texture/line quality.
 Be sure to study your work from a distance from time to time as you work. Critique when finished - How

does your work compare to the work of Chuck Close?

EVALUATION:
 Did you show an awareness and understanding of the work of chuck Close? Did you develop an

understanding in scale and proportion by studying the work of Chuck Close?

 Did you successfully use the ruler to make a grid and enlarge a photograph to scale?
 Did you perceive value and reproduce that using line, texture and pattern? Did you develop contrast for
interest?
