FW: Questions for March 2 Carolyn Morrison to: Carolyn Morrison, cbmorrison 03/01/2010 08:46 AM Please respond to cbmorrison From: Carolyn Morrison [mailto:cbmorrison@wepss.net] Sent: Monday, March 01, 2010 7:47 AM To: cbmorrison@mindspring.com Subject: Questions for March 2 Mr. Chairman, Thave heard that we may be considering some type of disciplinary action for our superintendent. If this is the case, isn’t he entitled to be present and with counsel if he desires? Wouldn't due process require this? Questions for March 2 1, Is the intent behind the resolution to end/repeal/rescind the diversity policy we have been following for ten years? No? Then are we going to continue following our current policy until it is repealed or rescinded? 2. Yes? If the intent is to end/repealor rescind the current policy, Ms. Majestic, would it take a 2/3 vote to end/tepeal/rescind this policy? 3. How did this resolution originate? Who wrote it? Where did you meet? (If Big Brothers, Big Sisters, how can you be involved in partisan politics and maintain your 501C status?) Who was consulted? What data support this resolution? Who had a part in the deliberation, development, and drafting of this resolution? Where was it produced? Who typed it? Do you have copies of the rough draft? Notes? E-mails shared between the board members and others? Was the chairman consulted? 4, Did you consult with any other board members? Who else had a part in creating this resolution? Since I know you didn’t consult with me, did you consult with Dr. McLaurin? Mr. Sutton? Mr. Hill? Ms, Prickett? Mr. Malone? Mr. Tedesco? Chairman Margiotta? 5. Did you get any information from staff regarding the cost of this resolution? What about the pedagogy? Implications for magnet schools? 6. Why was this not discussed at the Policy Committee meeting? 7. Why did we not discuss the data that Ms. Goldman asked us to gather and bring to a board work session? 8. How will this plan reduce assignments related to growth? 9. How can a plan that eliminates diversity as a goal “be respectful of our history as a community and an institution?” 10. What is innovative about segregation? 11, Is “program equity” the same as dismantling magnet schools? The proposed motion has been sprung on voters, taxpayers, and citizens. I move to table it for further study until the implications are understood and shared with the voters, taxpayers, and citizens who willbe affected by it. ‘The most important educational considerations are not just to increase cognitive gains in test score results but are to prepare students for later professional training and to teach them how to relate to the society in which they live. It is certain that today’s students will live in an increasingly non-white world. Young Latino, Asian-American, and African American students will become the new numerical majority before they reach old age. Increasingly they will need early training in learning, working, and living alongside each other. Parents who do nothing to promote diverse and healthy schools should expect that their own children will not cross paths with the young Obamas until they address them as Mr. President or Madame. President. You are the only person that's responded. I'm not sure what your position is cn the issue, but, I wanted everyone on the board to know that parents, educators, students and community leaders want to keep diversity in our schools. I feel that if we all work together we can come up with a solution that will benefit every child. ‘That's the focus. WE should look at what is going to benefit the children, We've lost focus and I for one am Praying to GOD that we can come up with a solution that is going to assist and benefit... ALL children. Thank you for your time. God Speed on working through this, Darius Telfaire --- On Wed, 3/3/10, Carolyn Morrison wrote: From: Carolyn Morrison Subject: Re: Please Vote "NO" on the Directive for Community-Based Schools To: "Darius Telfaire" Date: Wednesday, March 3, 2010, 9:06 PM Thank you for caring enough to share your thoughts with me Carolyn Morrison Board of Education District 6 919-850-8870 cbmorrison@wepss.net
