The Pilgrimage Festivals of
Jerusalem
The “Songs of Ascent” are thought to have been sung
while pilgrims were journeying from their hometowns to
Jerusalem for various religious festivals. Surely, the
greatest of these festivals would have been Passover,
but there were actually three festivals that would have
encouraged Israel to journey to the political and
religious capital.

All three of these festivals continue to be celebrated by

devout Jews.

• Passover – the feast commemorating Israel’s

rescue and departure from Egypt
• Shavuot – Festival of Weeks or Festival of
Firstfruits, the festival wherein Israel would bring
the first of the harvest crop as an offering to God.
(Pentecost occurs during Shavuot).
• Sukkot – Feast of Booths/Tabernacles, the festival
recalling the memory of living in the wilderness
for 40 years. During this festival, the pilgrim
would camp outside in tents.
Please don’t throw this away. If you’re not going to use it, leave it for
someone else to use.
