“portrayal.”

 Realism

 When things are depicted in

the way they would normally
appear in nature, the
representation is said to be
realistic.

simplifying and/or reorganizing
objects and elements according
to the demands of artistic
expression.

 Abstraction

 In some abstract works,

enough of a likeness has been
retained to represent real
things.

 Abstraction

 In others, the original objects

have been reduced to simple
geometric shapes and they can
be rarely identified unless the
artist has named them in his
title.
Ways of Representing Art
 Distortion

 When the figures have been

so arranged that proportions
differ noticeably from natural
measurements, the object are
said to be distorted.
Ways of Representing Art
 Distortion

 Distortion could also mean

twisting, stretching, or
deforming the natural shape of
the object.

dramatize the shape of a figure
or to create an emotional effect.

 Surrealism

 We generally regard
surrealism as realism plus
distortion.
Ways of Representing Art
 Surrealism

 In giving expression to what

is in the subconscious, the
surrealist compose dreamlike
scenes that show an irrational
arrangement of objects.
Ways of Representing Art
 Surrealism

 The images are

recognizable, sometimes drawn
from nature, but they are
combined in utterly fantastic
and unnatural relationships.
Ways of Representing Art
 Surrealism

 Another type of surrealism

depicts the workings of the
subconscious, the artist are
using symbols which are not
directly associated with the
familiar physical world.
