Ben Viccari, a championof Canadian multiculturalism,who led the Canadian EthnicMedia Association (CEMA)for ten years, establishing itas a force to be reckoned withwhen it came to ethnic mediaand communications, died ear-ly May 6 at the St. Michael’sHospital in Toronto as a resultof complications arising frompneumonia. He was 92.Viccari remained an activewriter, journalist and broad-caster a year before his death,when his physical conditionforced him into retirement.Born Benedetto Viccari onJuly 2, 1918, he was the sonof an Italian barber who im-migrated to England with hiswife.Viccari was educated at theClapham Xaverian Collegein London, England, but kepthis knowledge of Italian, a tal-ent that would serve him wellduring the Second World War,when he fought with the Allied
forces, rst as an artilleryman
and later as a member of theMilitary Mission to the ItalianArmy.In 1946 and 47, he worked
as a lm story analyst with
Rank Organization. He arrivedin Canada in 1947, acquiredcitizenship in 1953, workedin public relations and thenas managing editor of an Ital-ian language weekly, televi-sion commentator, and withIn Sync Productions, where hewas the co-producer and co-
writer of documentary lms,
one of which, The M Word,won a Canadian Association of Broadcasters Gold Ribbon forOMNI-TV in 2008.
