STONEWALLING FAMILIES OF LOCKERBIE VICTIMS
“APP founder calls on Senate Foreign Relations Committee to demand answers from
President Obama and his administration’s involvement in release of Lockerbie bomber.”
Washington, DC – One year ago today the Lockerbie bomber, Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, was released from jail
and returned to a hero’s welcome in Libya, after doctors claimed he had only three months to live. Reports have
recently surfaced that Megrahi, who has already outlasted his prognosis by a full nine months, may live on for
seven more years. The Libyan government, moreover, has made signs it intends to sponsor public celebrations in
honor of Megrahi on the anniversary of his release.

“Never has the phrase ‘adding insult to injury’ been more apt,” said Dr. Robert George, founder of the American
Principles Project and a personal friend of a young woman killed in the bombing. Dr. George represented her
family in their lawsuit against the Libyan government. “The possibility that the Libyan government will actually hold
a public celebration to mark the anniversary of Megrahi's release from prison is an outrage.”

Dr. George elaborated: “Megrahi's release by Scottish authorities, with no effective effort by the Obama
administration to prevent it, under the pretext of showing compassion for an allegedly dying man, was an injury to
the cause of justice. The idea of a state-sponsored celebration of the injury by the Ghaddafi regime in Libya is an
insult to the thousands of family members---moms and dads, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and others---
left bereaved by Megrahi's act of mass murder. There is nothing we can do now to make things right. But we can
stake steps to make sure that a wrong like this one never happens again.”

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee recently postponed plans to hold hearings on the Megrahi release and
investigate allegations that the release was motivated by a pending oil agreement with Libya. This decision was
prompted in part by Scotland’s refusal to allow its public officials to appear before the committee. The Committee,
however, can still pursue answers from officials within the U.S. government.

Dr. George called upon the Committee to aggressively demand answers from the Obama administration over why
the U.S. State Department gave the Scottish government a permission slip to release Megrahi: “We Americans
have no votes in Scottish elections. The good people of Scotland will be the ones to hold their authorities
accountable. But it is up to us to call our government to account. The stonewalling must end. We Americans must
demand to know: What did U.S. officials know about the plans for Megrahi’s release, and when did they know it?”

Dr. George concluded, “If President Obama knew about Megrahi’s pending release, what steps, if any, did he
personally take to persuade Scottish authorities against it? If no steps were taken by the President, he owes us
an explanation for that - and he owes the families of victims a sincere apology.”
