Plastics - Symbols and abbreviated terms
Recycling triangle1. Introduction
High-grade recyclates can be obtained from single-sort thermoplastics by means of mechanical recy-cling. Generic marking of plastics parts provide vitalassistance here. This Technical Information de-scribes the marking of plastics parts according toISO 11469 and DIN EN ISO 11469, and on theimplementation of these provisions for Bayer'srange of thermoplastics.
1.1 Material identification
The identification is made up of symbols and ab-breviated terms for polymers and their characteris-tics given in ISO 1043/1-4 and ISO 18064, whichare preceded and followed by the "greater than" (>)and "smaller than" (<) symbols respectively.Example: >PC<
1.2 Recycling identification
The recycling pictogram (recycling triangle) may beused in Germany on plastics parts in addition to thematerial symbols.
2. Examples of material identificationfor plastics parts
2.1 Homopolymers
Example: polycarbonate >PC<(abbreviated term of the basic polymer, enclosed bythe two angle signs > <)
2.2 Polymer blends (alloys)
Example: (polycarbonate+ABS) blend >PC+ABS<(abbreviated terms of the blend components, maincomponent first separated by a plus sign, enclosedby the two angle signs > < )
2.3 Filled, reinforced or otherwise treatedpolymers
Example: polycarbonate with 20 % glass fiber>PC-GF20<PC = abbreviated term of basic polymerGF = filler/reinforcing material20 = filler/reinforcing material content in % byweight(abbreviated term of the polymere, enclosed by theangle signs > <)
2.4 Flame retardant polymers
Example: (polycarbonate+ABS) blend with halogen-free organic phosphorous compound as flameretardant.>PC+ABS-FR(40)<

(Abbreviated term of the basic polymer followed bythe symbol "FR" with the code number, like ISO1043 part 4, of the flame retardant enclosed inbrackets).
2.5 Molded parts made up of several, inseparable polymers
Example: vehicle instrument panel in PC+ABS(main component), foamed PU and TPU film>TPU,PUR,PC+ABS<(abbreviated terms of the composite components, separated by commas, visible component first, maincomponent underlined, and all enclosed by the twoangle signs > <)
3. Nature, size and application of theidentification
To permit the generic identification of used plasticsparts, the identification marking should be im-pressed on the surface of the part either in raisedlettering or in relief. The size of the lettering is dependent on the size ofthe part. The recycling pictogram should be clearlyrecognizable. The identification should be separatefrom the manufacturer identification data. It shouldbe located at a readily accessible point where it canhighlight the material's recyclability.
4. Identification of thermoplastics
4.1 The identification to be used for the basicpolymers is as follows:Apec

>PC+ABS<(Polycarbonate+ABS) blend
Desmopan

Additional information on the marking of specialgrades from our product range is available in thefollowing tables. All Bayer MaterialScience engineering thermoplas-tics can be remelted without displaying any instabil-ity. Thus, they are suitable for reuse within theframework of recycling processes, even for severaltimes, when they once become waste. In order to ensure high-grade reuse, it is recom-mended that unreinforced, reinforced and FRgrades of each plastics type be collected sepa-rately. Even better results are obtained by collectingsingle grades and single colors separately. There-fore it is recommended that further material identifi-cation be provided in the form of additional detailson the trade name and grade, the date, the classifi-cation and designation of the compound, and, where appropriate, the part manufacturer.
