DELPHOS — One is a very familiarfigure on the sidelines, be it football,basketball or whatever spot.The other is not but soon will be.These are the Athletic TrainersCertified (ATC) that are prominent in agrowing number of programs.Tom Lane is beginning his 15th sea-son as the ATC for St. John’s, whileElizabeth Hughes is in her inauguralseason for Jefferson.It’s much more than taping ankles andicing knees: the job has grown to includerehabilitation, nutrition and other areas tohelp athletes prevent injuries and comeback when they inevitably happen.Lane began his tenure at St. John’sfresh out of Bowling Green StateUniversity graduate school.Hughes worked for five years foran East Coast Hockey League team inKalamazoo, Michigan, before coming toDelphos.“When I first got here, there were onlytwo other teams in the MAC that had anATC; now, all but three have them,”Lane, a native of Toledo, began. “I hurtmy knee as a 17-year-old in the OlympicSoccer Development program. It becameapparent I was not going to be able tocontinue and through the process of get-ting my knee taken care of, I ended up atthe Medical College of Ohio in Toledo.The rest, as they say, is history.”He has noticed more than a fewchanges since.“One, the kids are better conditioned,bigger, stronger and faster, which meansthat the injuries are more severe becauseof higher impact,” he added. “Knee inju-
