Sec 2 – 3: Solving Equations by Adding and
Subtracting

Objectives:
1) To solve equations by adding.
2) To solve equations by subtracting.
Vocabulary-

Equation- A mathematical sentence with an equal

sign.

Open Sentence- An equation with one or more

variables.

Solution of an Equation- A value for a variable that

makes an equation true.

Inverse Operations- Operations that undo each other.

Key Concepts

 Addition Property of Equality

 If you add the same value to each side of an
equation, the two sides remain equal.

 Subtraction Property of Equality

 If you subtract the same value from each side of
an equation, the two sides remain equal.
Ex 1) Solving Equations by Adding

Solve x – 34 = 46, then check your answer.

Check Understanding: Example 1
Solve each equation. Check your answer.

a) x – 104 = 64

b) y – 129 = -72

c) -148 + h = 179
Ex 2) Real-World Problem Solving
