DEFINATION OF ENERGY

‘ Lightning is the
electrical breakdown of air by
strong electric fields and is a
flow of energy. The electric
potential energy in the
atmosphere changes into heat,
light and sound which are
other forms of energy.’
Energy crisis

• India moved towards serious energy crisis in the 1980s.

• Demand of energy has increased due to, rapid

industrialization, urbanization, transportation.

• Gap between demand and conventional fuel which turns

into worsening energy crisis.
According to the International Energy
Agency,

• There is no ground for believing that our energy

problems have been solved .A new oil crisis is still to be
feared.

• Coming to the Indian situation we have observed that

the energy crisis has adversely affected almost all the
sectors of our economy.
Energy crisis in the sectors of economy

• The industrial sector, which is the most energy-

interensive sector, has been the hard-hitest due to non-
availability of adequate amount of fuels.

• The transportation sector the key sector of the economy

generally gets its share of the fuel even at a higher price.

• The agricultural and the household sectors being less

energy intensive have also been able absorb this shock
without much difficulty.
……moving towards solution
• Firms have to adopt either low energy intensive
technologies or to use more and more of non-
conventional renewable energy sources for which more
funds have to flow to them.

• The commonly used sources of non-conventional energy

that are developed at present are solar energy, biogas
and wind.
Non-conventional energy source
-the solar energy
• Among the different solar devices the most
popularly used ones are the solar cookers and
solar water heating systems (SWHS).
solar water heating systems
(SWHS)
Accordingly the broad goals of the
study have been set out as:

• To undertake both the commercial and economic

feasibility studies of SWHS in few selected industries
under different sets of assumptions;

• To identify the possible reasons for slow acceptance of

this emerging device;

• To draw certain policy issues for the Government as well

as for the users.
Implemented ……..
• The approach adopted to accomplish the above
objectives has been to use the tool of Benefit-cost
Analysis of few SWHSs installed in some selected
industrial units .

• The units selected for such exercise are:

-Abad Diary;
-The Jehangir Textile Mills At Ahmedabad, Gujarat;
-The parag diary and the Muir Mills at kanpu, U.P .
In order to accomplish the tasks the format adopted in the
present study has been;

• Chapter one; highlights the main issues of the research problem.

• Chart two; presents the world Energy crisis vis-à-vis India’s energy
crisis.

• Chapter three; on the other hand deals with the new energy policy
of the Government of India impact of energy crisis on the industrial
sector and the scope of use solar energy in the industrial sector.

• Chapter four; outlines the scope of use of Benefit-Cost Analysis in

the non-conventional energy sector
• Chapter five; discusses the techniques of sample selection method
of data collection and the methodology used in the present study for
estimation of benefits and costs of the SWHS.

• The next four chapters, i.e., six to nine contain the case studies of
the sample unit’s
Advantages
• On the basis of the commercial and social Benefit-Cost calculations
of the SWHSs at the sample units the study has arrived at the
conclusions that the SWHSs are definitely a commercially viable
proposition for the dairy and textile units.

• larger Systems are more profitable than the smaller ones due to the
presence of the economies of scale such Systems.

• When the benefits and costs of the Systems were measured in

terms of social benefits and social costs the estimates have
indicated that the systems are socially feasible propositions.
Remedy of Bio fuel:

BIO FUEL
Bio fuels are being increasingly used as a climate
friendly source of energy as opposed to other energy
production methods. Bio fuels are derived from plants
and emit less carbon dioxide and hence result in less
global warming all across the world...
Usage of Bio Fuel……..
It has been an important source of energy
in the United States of America (USA), Brazil
and several European countries. In Brazil and
the USA bio ethanol is produced as a substitute
for gasoline, while in the European countries bio
diesel is produced.
Usage of Bio Fuel in India
• In a developing country like India bio fuels could come to the rescue
of lakhs of villages, which still do not have any electricity.

• Bio fuels could easily be used to solve the local energy problems of
such villages. Fifty per cent of these villages are still not electrified
and depend on kerosene for their daily needs.

• Burning of kerosene is highly inefficient and known to have adverse

effects on the health of the people. It is in this regard the bio fuels
could be used to cater to the local needs of families for their
household purposes as well as the production of oil.
Straight vegetable oils (SVOs)
• Straight vegetable oils (SVOs) includes Jatropha plantation can be
used to produce oil, which can be used at the household level and
excess oil can also be sold to other people. One hectare of Jatropha
plantation is equivalent to producing almost one and a half ton of oil
every year.

Jatropha plantations----
Usage of Jatropha in India
In the India, Jatropha plantations could be used to
energy and do not have too many effects on the
environment. Bio fuels are a great method of energy
production and farmers and scientists should try and use
better methods so as to reduce global warming.
Copenhagen
• A solution to the world’s energy problems may lie in a Chinese
mushroom growing in Novozymes A/S laboratories, Fungi like
mushrooms and lichen make enzymes to eat rotting logs and
decaying leaves.

• An affordable alternative to gasoline made from plant waste would

end concerns that global hunger for energy is driving up food prices
world-wide. Novozymes said it will find the answer by 2010, getting
to the market before its closest rival, Danisco.
“In 2010, we will have enzymes commercially available
and a process that will allow our customers to produce at around
$2.50 per gallon,” Novozymes chief executive officer Steen
Riisgaard said in a September interview in Copenhagen. The
company increased its research department by 13% last year.

Last May, Novozymes microbiologist Wenping Wu led

scientists from farm to farm in Northeast China, searching through
piles of decaying corn stalks for new kinds of fungi. The search is
daunting because of the sheer number of fungi. Researchers have
amassed 480,264 different kinds and say as many as 1.5 million
species may exist.
Conclusion

Solar water heating system and Bio Fuels

are the best answer to the energy crisis that India is
facing, the right methods need to be employed to have
the best effects else like in other countries if the wrong
fertilizers are used, bio fuels could have unintended
harmful consequences. Bio fuels should hence use land
and energy efficiently and hence can be the answer to
the energy crisis.
