Notes from the Chairwoman
HI GUYS!
! sure to let them know how much we all
The first newsletter with the season in
full swing. And what a glorious start! I
am sure all of you have been so glad to
see our Blues gracing our television
screens and have enjoyed the results.
And though it would be heaven to see
“easy” wins each week, I don’t know how
realistic that would be, so don’t get
complacent. Support the team; I know
they can hear us from across the pond!
!
This summer has seen a lot of changes
to the way CIA functions and we have
been working behind the scenes to make
it all happen. We are all so proud to
report that Chelsea has approved a
system whereby we can break into local
and regional chapters to better stay in
touch with all our members and yet be
one big club - a sort of coalition of
clubs. It was a bit of a struggle to get all
the details worked out, but so far it is
working FANTASTIC! Of course none of it
works without you, the member, and of
course our incredible volunteer army! In
a nutshell, many across the country
stepped up and asked to head up a local
chapter, so we started with them. These
chapter heads have been working
tirelessly to organize and activate their
local members and to stay in touch with
them and build this Army of Blue
Supporters in America. Personally I am
so proud of each of them; to take time
out of their lives to do all it takes to
create these local chapters is amazing!
And you know it doesn’t end there for
them, each of them have also stepped
up and o"ered their service to CIA for
the better of all members. We were able
to create committees to bring even more
to members, like a technology
committee, marketing committee,
merchandise committee and more. They
are not only looking over their clubs but
giving a little bit more so that we all
benefit. So when you see your local head
in the pub, or on the bulletin board, be
appreciate their e"orts.

Just so you know how that a"ects us
immediately, we have been able to
further improve on the database that
keeps us all connected. We are in
process of working on a new website for
CIA, we have seen an improved
functionality to the Membership
application and payment page, and of
course the new ticketing page for True
Blue members has really been improved
- all thanks to the technology
committee. Along with that we have a
new sponsor BLUE BUNNY ICE CREAM,
and the benefits of that will be heading
to you soon in your membership
package (the benefits of marketing). And
speaking of the membership package,
our merchandise committee has spent
tireless hours coming up with a member
gift that I am sure will please you all!
With a little luck you will be receiving it
in the next week or two in your mail
box. And it isn’t stopping there. We are
working on making some CIA
merchandise available soon, and it could
include, shirts, hoodies, pins and
scarves! What a great way of showing
your support of Chelsea and
ChelseainAmerica.

We have also heard that the team will be
heading to Asia this coming summer and
though it is disappointing, we have to
remember we are not the only loyal True
Blues in the world. And we have to share
our boys in the summer. After some
sadness on the bulletin board, someone
suggested that we have our own
“Summer Tour”, and it seems many are
thinking that would be a great idea. So
we are already looking into planning
something really great for our members
this coming summer, again because of

connections and volunteer time. We are
looking into a fabulous setting for all of
us to meet up for a few days, have a
laugh, enjoy the camaraderie of fellow
members, have a kick about, talk
Chelsea, have a sing song and just
general merry making. We want it to be
a great event that would be fun for the
singletons amongst us and for families,
so young and old alike. We also hope
that we will make it so a"ordable
everyone will want to be there and be
able to a"ord to be there! And you never
know, maybe we can work out a surprise
or two.

But the biggest news, the best news, the
most exciting news... we have been OK’d
to have all the chapters (that qualify, i.e.
they need to have 20 CIA members) have
a banner made to hang at the Bridge!
Imagine how cool it would be to see a
long line of banners pan across our
television sets in America announcing all
the chapters! What a great way to let
everyone that is there know that we in
America are BLUE AND PROUD! Now the
banners are not free, and every club has
to have at least 20 members, so how can
you help make that happen? You all
know that we try and keep yearly dues
down to a minimum to make sure that
everyone can a"ord it, and we certainly
didn’t budget for sending 22 banners to
the Bridge this season. So what can you
do to help? Make sure your local club
has their 20 members, and if they don’t I
am sure you all know one person that
loves Chelsea and is willing to join us, so
get them to sign up! And then there is
the funding of the banners; we need
help, so if everyone gave $4 we would
be able to more than pay for the
banners. Again, get with your chapter
head and see how you can help make
that happen!

those people that stepped forward to
bring us all closer together and to have
even more fun following our team, this
edition of the newsletter is dedicated to
THE CHAPTERS! A new book is being
written about CIA and we want to
celebrate it. Below please find a listing of
all the chapters (so you all know how to
reach out to them if you are traveling
and want to meet up, or if you just want

of the chapters and how to reach them.
Of course the best way is to sign on to
the bulletin board! You don’t have to
read everything, but it is a great way to
keep up with what is happening. If you

5 QUESTIONS FOR.... Kent Blues Gill and Graeme Reeves
Gill and Graeme are honorary CIA members and season-ticket holders at the Bridge. After each match, Gill
posts her match report on the message board. I thought it was time to introduce them through 5 questions!
How and when did you become
Chelsea?
Gill:-
There have always been Chelsea
supporters in our family, so I guess you
could say from the day I was born.
There is also a story that when Chelsea
won the title in 1955 my Grandfather
snuck away with me and took me in my
pram along the Fulham Road to join in
the celebrations. I was 2 years old, so of
course don’t remember it at all, but I am
told I came back draped in a Chelsea
scarf. We were gone for over 6 hours
and apparently there was a search party
sent out to find us!
Chelsea kind of skipped a generation for
me as my Dad was not in the least bit
interested in football and then luckily it
re-emerged when my sons Neil and
Graeme were born.! I am very proud of
them as alongside their Mum they are
both Chelsea through and through!!
Graeme:-!
My mum has brought me up with
Chelsea, but everyone in school was Man
Utd.! I confess I nearly got swayed, but
in the nick of time, I went to Stamford
Bridge to see Chelsea beat
Middlesborough 2-1 in March, 2001. It
was watching the little maestro Zola that
made me realise Chelsea were the team
for me! He was just magical and I am so
happy I got the chance to see him play.!
What is your favourite Chelsea
memory?
Gill:-
Oh goodness, can I choose more than
one!!!
First and foremost seeing the look on
the faces of the Kent Blues kids
whenever we get to take them to
matches.
If I had to pick a match, it would be
Chelsea vs. Barcelona in the Champions
League, 8th March 2005.! I have never,
ever in my life been in such an incredible
atmosphere at the Bridge as when JT
scored the winner.! I remember at the
end we would not leave the Stadium for
ages because we were celebrating so
wildly. They must have played “Blue is
the Colour” about ten times and then an
announcement came over the
loudspeaker which said, “Ok, just one
more song, and then you all really have
to go home!”
The tour last year to the USA and
sharing it with you all; seldom a day
goes by when we don’t talk about it.!

Like Mum, I need to choose more than
one please.
Our tour to the US last year is right up
there; especially meeting you all and
sharing the tour with legends Tommy
and Steve. I love to visit new stadiums
and am doing a lot of away games this
year mainly because the atmosphere is
so great. I loved the Dallas Cowboys
stadium and will never forget it.
My favourite match would be when we
beat Arsenal in the Carling Cup 2007. It
was my first final at the Millenium
Stadium and got real nasty with 2
sending o"s. But we won 2-1 thanks to
2 great goals from Didi!
This year winning the double and going
along to have our photo with the
Premiership Trophy and FA cup.! I
rushed in and grabbed hold of the Prem
and Mum couldn’t wrestle me o" it.

Who is your favourite first team
player?
Gill:-
“EASY, EASY”, you all know this one -

Frank!!
From the minute he signed for us, I
knew he would be special. Worth every
penny of the £11 million we paid for
him, West Ham’s loss was truly our gain!
He always works hard and is truly
dedicated to his football.! I was so
relieved when he signed his new
contract to stay two seasons ago.! There
is no question in my mind that he is
already a Chelsea Legend and will go on
to become our highest ever goal scorer.
We have been so lucky to meet Frank a
few times and he is the nicest person
you could ever wish to know.
Graeme:-
JT, because of his leadership and
commitment to the Club from ever since
he was a youth player.
I was so worried when I thought he
might leave last season and remember
Mum and me dancing around in our
he said he would stay. !

What is your most cherished piece of
Chelsea stu!?
Gill:-
Oh, here we go again!! Decisions,
decisions.
I’ve got a personalised signed shirt by
Frank after we won the title again in
2005. He was voted our Kent Blues
Player of the Year and we presented him
with our very own trophy. I actually also
have a pair of his boots!
As you will all know I am a lover of
banners and flags, so can I also please
add our Kent Blues flag, and of course
the CIA flag from you all when we were
on tour.
Graeme:-
A signed 2005/2006 home shirt which I
was very lucky to have done on the night
for Player of the Year and a Teenage
Cancer Trust T Shirt which JT threw to
me during a warm up at Stamford Bridge
last year. !

BOSTON BLUES

The formation of the Boston Blues was
set in motion back in last October,
when one other member and I first
met up to watch Chelsea drub
Blackburn 5-0.! Since then we’ve really
grown in leaps and bounds.! We are
the CIA Local Club of New England,
with most of our members hailing
from Boston and the surrounding area
(hence the name). The new regional
set-up that has been implemented
this year has been perfect for us, as
it’s allowed us to focus solely on
organizing the Chelsea support in the
area without having to do all the
administrative work that comes with
running a supporters’ club.
Because of this, our numbers have
increased all throughout the summer,
as we were able to use Facebook,
Twitter and other social networking to
help get the word out about the
Boston Blues.! It’s been incredible as
we’ve grown from a group of 4 or 5 of
us getting together over breakfast last
winter, to about 15 people on an
informal email list, all the way to the
Silver level club we are now, more
than 30 members strong, with more
every week.
We meet for all matches at The
Phoenix Landing in Cambridge, MA,
the O#cial Pub of the Boston Blues.!
We’re working to turn New England
Blue, so if you haven’t yet, join us!! If

GEORGIA BLUES

Georgia Blues is an up and coming
supporters club with members from
Georgia and surrounding states. If you're
planning to be anywhere near Atlanta,
come join!us for a match!at our
uno#cial headquarters, the Brewhouse
Cafe. Most of the Georgia Blues
members live outside of Atlanta but
make the trip to the Brewhouse Cafe
regularly for the comraderie, singing and
to cheer on the Blues.!We are an
ecclectic yet tight-knit!group with
singles, families and couples from all
over. The pub/cafe is generally filled
with supporters of most clubs in the
Premier League, but we are proud to
dominate the singing, usually in volume,
always in creativity! Come join us for a
pint and be prepared to hear some
stories and sing some songs!

MIDWEST BLUES

Formed in May of 2005, the Midwest
Blues are now part of Chelsea In
America. We are an o#cial Chelsea FC
supporters club carrying the "Blue
Flag" for the Midwest states of the US,
taking in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa,
Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota,
Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota,
Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
So what can the Midwest Blues do for
you? We are here to be a focal point
for Chelsea supporters, whether it be
simply a place to chat online about
Chelsea, a way of meeting new friends
in your town, participating in trips
around the US to visit other Chelsea
groups or see Chelsea play, or even to
discuss heading over to London to see
Chelsea at their famous Stamford
Bridge stadium. The Midwest Blues
cater actively to both the adult and
family aspects of following soccer so
we encourage you to get involved at
whatever level you feel comfortable
with, but be warned, being a Chelsea
supporter is infectious and a lot of
fun!

Do you have any pregame rituals?
Gill:-
We ALWAYS display the Chelsea flag in
our front window at home on any match
day.! I get a bit neurotic if I think I’ll
forget, so I lay it on the windowsill the
night before just to remind me.! I
remember once we drove back from
Folkestone, a round trip of 10 miles,
when we had forgotten to do it because
we were so worried it would jinx us! The
other thing I do is kiss Frank and JT’s
photos on the wall before we leave.! I
have this thing about them not getting
injured!!
It’s a bit of a crazy one, but I always sit
on the right of Graeme at away matches,
it’s because I sit on his right at Stamford
Bridge, so even if our seats are allocated
the other way around, we switch.
Graeme:-
I make sure I wear certain pieces of
clothing for every game; they include
Chelsea socks, top and pants!
BELTWAY BLUES

The Beltway Blues is the local CIA
a#liate club for the greater Washington
DC metro area.! We include Northern
Virginia, Maryland, the District and even
West Virginia! We have been an uno#cial
group, kind of loose and scattered, for
about a year now.! We actually started as
a Facebook group, which was set up
simply to find and assemble local
Chelsea fans to have discussions and
watch matches together now and then.
There were several of us that were CIA
and True Blue members with a handful
of us being able to see a match at
Stamford Bridge once a season.
We formed kind of by accident, with an
email from one of our founding
members, Allison, who had been
chatting with Beth.! Allison had
mentioned how the Facebook group was
getting people together for matches and
was attempting to grow.! With Beth as
our guide we’ve taken the next step in
growing the Beltway Blues as a great
group of passionate Chelsea fans.! Most
recently some of us got together for a
tailgate party before watching the
Manchester City v. Inter Milan friendly in
Baltimore. Great fun and great people!!
We’re looking to becoming more
involved with Chelsea in America and of
course, Keeping the Blue Flag Flying
High over Washington DC!
THE OC BLUES by Andy Wray
Starting from just 7 guys just a few
years ago, and growing into the West
Coast Shed End on most big matches,
the OC Blues have seen many ups and
downs together- and!usually do so
before 9AM and always in "Chelsea-
Style"- by singing CFC songs, cheering
on our players and pretending we are
on the terraces in the Shed End week-in
and week-out!

TEL'S MONTH IN QUESTION
THIS MONTH’S
HIGHLIGHTED FIXTURE:
West Ham United Vs Chelsea:
Well, it wasn’t really a hard
choice this month. We seem
to have a long history against
the “pikeys" and it hasn’t
always been about what’s
going on on the pitch. We’ve
played our neighbors 129
times of which we have sent
them down the District line with no
points on 49 occasions; we have drawn a
total of 28 and for some reason have
lost 52 times. Our first o#cial league
game against them wasn’t played until
1923, but we had played them in the
football combination since 1915. In front
of a crowd of over 50,000, we played out
a 0-0 draw at the Bridge.
Even though Chelsea have lost more
than we have won against “the 'ammers,"
a lot of these losses were during the war
years when a lot of teams had to used
guest players. One example was in the
Football League south game in 1940 in
front of 8645 - even though we had a
player get a hat trick we still (just) lost
3-10. I mean, come guys, it’s West Ham
- who could lose that much to them
now? It’s laughable!
But that’s the way it was. We didn’t really
start getting to play them on a regular
basis in the League until 1958; just
about the time a certain J. Greaves hit
the scene. Our results have gotten better
since the war years, none more so than a
nice 6-2 drubbing on April 9, 1966. Our
team that day was Bonetti, Kirkup,
McCreadie, Hollins, Hinton, Harris,
Bridges, Graham, Osgood, Venables,
Tambling. Our Goalscorers: Harris,
Graham 2, Venables, Tambling 2.
In recent years we do seem to stick four
past them a lot. Last season we won
4-1, then 4-0 in 07/08 and 4-1 in
06/07, both at Upton Park. We won 4- 1
at the Bridge in 05/06, and sometimes
we get greedy and score 5 against them
as we did in 01/02. There was also a
game in late '96 which we won 3-1 at
home; nothing remarkable about that,
but it will always stand out for Franco
Zola running circles around Julian Dicks
and smashing the ball into an empty net.

CHELSEA LEGEND:
How do I do a piece on a legend
to tie in with West Ham? Should I
do Lampard, Cole, Zola, Clarke?
No, I decided to focus on Jimmy
Greaves. Where do I start on one
of Chelsea’s most prolific!goal-
getters ever? Well, he made his
debut in August 1957, scoring in
a 1-1 draw away at Spurs.
He was basically a goalscoring
goals in 35 games - not bad for a 17-
year-old! In those 22 goals came a
foursome against Pompey and a hat-
season he played in all 42 games and
scored 32, this time bagging 5 against
Wolves and another hat-trick against
Nottingham Forest. He slowed down a
bit in 59/60 scoring just 29 times from
40 games, but once again he did bag
another 5 goal haul this time against
Preston.
In his final season in 60/61, Greavesy
played in 40 games and scored 41 goals,
including 3 hat-tricks and 4 braces. One
of his four goal showings was in his last
game at home at the Bridge against
Nottingham Forest. Many fans were
upset when they got wind of Greavesy
moving to AC Milan, and the same fans
were even more upset when he came
back to England after just 5 months and
went to Spurs. During his time with
Tottenham he was top scorer in every
season, just as he was at Chelsea.
Greavesy has a very distinct record of
scoring on every one of his debuts.
When his career was over he had netted
357 times in the “old” first division
alone, 35 times in the FA Cup and 44
times for England. For Chelsea his final
stats were: played 169 matches, scored
132 goals. Not bad for a bloke who
never put on the #9 shirt! For some
reason Greavesy doesn’t have anything
to do with Chelsea anymore but in some
Chelsea fans' eyes he’ll always be a
CHELSEA LEGEND. !

CHELSEA TRIVIA: The day we played
West Ham and Pierluigi Casiraghi’s
career ended was also the same day that
Joe Cole signed professional forms for
West Ham.
