Who are Working Title?

- A film company who are conglomerate of Universal Film Studios, they have produced
136 British comedy films, e.g. Nanny Mcphee, Hot Fuzz, The Boat that Rocked and
Wild Child.

Who are Warp Films?

- Warp Films are not a part of a conglomerate company inside another, it’s an
independent company; they mainly produce thriller and scary films, e.g. Four Lions,
Donkey Punch. They also produced other films such as, Arctic Monkeys at the Apollo
and This is England.

How does the ownership of the company affect the budgets for film?

- The funding of the main company of the film could be from another country, e.g.
America, but this doesn’t affect the fact it’s a British film. This just means there is
more money to create the film with so the budget is increased.

Working Title films have a higher budget than the Warp Films movies. The amount that each
film made would have covered the costs of making them, Hot Fuzz would have made a lot
more money than This is England as it’s more well known to the rest of the world.

- The appeal of this genre is the fantasy storyline and the fictional characters, people
of all ages like to watch adventure films therefore it sells well.

- Working Title’s target audience are people of all age ranges, as they create family
films rating ‘PG’ or ‘U’ and the alternative films rating ’15’ or ‘18’ so there are a variety
of ages that they cater for. E.g. Mr Beans Holiday (PG) and Ali G Indahouse (15)
Warp Films’ target audience would be mainly adults as their films are quite often
horror/thriller or adult drama. E.g. Donkey Punch (thriller) and This Is England
(rude/adult drama)

Where do Working Title and Warp Films get their funding from?

- Working Title get their funding from Universal Studios as they branch from that
original company.
Warp Films receive their funding from NESTA.

In the case of Warp Films, how does the budget affect the genre of film they use?

- Warp Films get lower budget films than other producing companies, this affects the
genres of film they create, most of their films are thrillers, which are low budget films
anyway – as there are not very often well known actors in thriller or horror films, they
tend to be up and coming actors/actresses.

- Working Title mainly produces family comedy films, the ratings can range from ‘U’ to
‘18’ though so they cater for a wide audience, their films are popular as comedy is a
commonly liked genre.
