HELPING HANDS
After the worst oil spill in Taean
County’s history, Sadie Bleistein
documents the overwhelming
volunteer response.
jpgmag.com/people/sadiebleistein

Taean County is a popular tourist

destination in South Korea that’s
famous for its seafood. In December
of 2008, this region experienced the
worst oil spill in its history when nearly
66,000 barrels of crude oil washed
ashore, creating a huge ecological and
economic disaster.
In the ensuing months, many people
from around the world came together
to help clean up and restore the area.
About 63,800 people reside in Taean,
but volunteers like these two girls
surpassed the one million mark. To me
this proves that if we all join together
we really can make a difference.

BOTTOMS UP!
Sexy legs in the center of Berlin cause
Stefano Corso to stop and admire the view.

When I noticed that every man, woman, and child who

walked by this huge advertisement stopped to stare and
comment on it, I had to get a photo. This ad for the Austrian
manufacturer, Palmers Textil AG, was on Unter den Linden,
one of the main boulevards in Berlin.
Some time after I took this photograph, a brother of one
of the models asked me for a signed copy, which he ended
up giving to his sister as a gift.

SHOPPING FOR SHEEP

Tom Fakler shares how Muslims
in Morocco prepare for Eid al-Adha.
jpgmag.com/people/tomfakler

Eid al-Adha, or “Festival of Sacrifice,” is a holiday that

some say is like the American Thanksgiving and Christ-
mas rolled into one. It commemorates the willingness of
Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God,
and is celebrated by Muslims worldwide.
In Morocco, each Muslim household is expected to
slaughter a sheep for Eid al-Adha. Residents of Fez, the
country’s third largest city, head to one of the many sheep
souks (markets) to purchase sheep. Souks are usually
held in open fields where tents selling charcoal, grills,
knives, and food spring up everywhere. The atmosphere is
always lively with men showing off their sheep and people
shopping.
This year a sheep cost about three weeks’ salary for
the average Moroccan, so it was considered a major
purchase. Since bargaining is common here, the haggling 02
was especially hot and heavy!

^ heading home
A sheep is purchased and taken
to its new home. Sheep usually
move willingly when they are
in the field, but after being
purchased they will sometimes
put up a fight, and the new owner
will drag or carry it home. The
family will keep the sheep in
the house from the time it is
purchased until it is sacrificed.

BETH DITTO : GOSSIP QUEEN
Loraine Ross ends her birthday on a high note.

Gossip’s performance was not only a great closing act to

the Latitude Festival, where dozens of bands played on
four different stages, but also an amazing end to my 23rd
birthday. I feel this shot sums up the band’s explosive
energy and singer Beth Ditto’s character perfectly.
