The week ahead – M + D Sunday ride 26 Sep 2010
Mud & Dirt (MTB) by The English Nose
It’s been a while since we were riding at Kemensah, 26 weeks ago according to my
chronological record of rides. Could it be that long? Well, lets just hope the
bamboo forest section has not caved in and the ruts are no deeper than the RD
height.
Weekend MTB Ride – Kemensah
Date: Sunday, 26th Sept 2010
Meeting Time: 7.30am
Meeting Place: Taman Melawati (next to Zoo Negara)
Ride Distance: 22km
Ride Description: Well do the usual KLMBH route and perhaps have an
alternative final downhill out.
It will involve brilliant bamboo single track, sticky climbs and gnarly (dude) down hills. Plenty of hills,
very little flat sections. Starts off with a 5km kampong road ride in and the same back out. Total
distance of 22km. Not so good for novice riders due to numerous hills.
How to Get There:
Best to use the MRR2 (Middle Ring Road 2) towards Taman Melawati which is ½ way between Batu Caves and Ampang on
this road.
From Ampang, turn off for Taman Melawati (same junction for U turn to Zoo Negara).
Once off the highway, turn right (don t U turn to the zoo) and go straight until you see a Caltex and BHP petrol station on
the left. The meeting point is the open car park behind.
From Batu Caves, turn off left to Taman Melawati (you can
see shop lots with CIMB and Maybank banks just before).
Go
straight until you see a Caltex and BHP petrol station on the
left. The meeting point is the open car park behind.
GPS location: 3.211000, 101.751800

The week ahead – T + G Sunday ride 26 Sept 2010
Sunday Road Ride by Don Chan
Bentong is a small rustic town just 80km out of the bustling city. We will ride into
Bentong via Jalan Gombak, which is a scenic & low‐traffic road which snakes along a
winding river. Roads are in good nick. Fresh cool air is standard. Make sure you
refuel & refill at Shell station at Bentong. You will surely need it on the gradual
climb back to Genting Sempah rest area (GSRA).
Weekend Road Ride – GSRA to Bentong
Date: Sunday, 26th Sept 2010
Meeting Time: 7.45am sharp
(please be there 15minutes before start)
Start/ End: Genting Sempah Rest Area/ GSRA (in front of McD)
GPS: N03° 21.102’ E101° 47.503’
Or if you prefer, go to Google Maps Malaysia & search for “Petronas Genting Sempah”. Basically, drive
along Karak Hwy towards Kuantan and exit after Genting tunnel. GSRA is on your right immediately after
tunnel.
Route: Options A: GSRA‐Hot Springs (U‐turn)‐GSRA (40km). Perfectly suitable for newbies*
Option C: For those needing mileage for upcoming KOM Cameron:
AWE food court‐GSRA‐Shell‐Kow Po Coffeeshop‐GSRA‐AWE (113km).
This is an option for you crazy hardcore, but there will be no Ride Leader here. U should
start about 6:45am if you wish to join up with those starting from GSRA.
AWE GPS coordinates are: N03° 14.757’E101° 43.643’
Comments: Although vehicular traffic is low, lorries do ply this road. Typically, they will take the whole berth of the
road upon entering a switchback and sharp corners; so I do encourage to keep an eye out for them and
let them pass at tight corners.
Some corners might have loose gravel and sand, so do slow down when
approaching at a fast speed.
* Newbies are assumed to be proficient to ride on tarred roads alongside
motorized vehicles and down hills.
Things to bring: Spare tube, pump, 2 water bottles, some energy bars, $,
hand phone & helmet.
Ride leader: Mr. Prez himself, Ivan Chan (012‐379 2979). See yuh Sunday!

EVENTS! EVENTS! EVENTS!
The most awaited epic ride is back this year....we are pleased to announce the return of ..
Classic Plentong Epic ride 2010
....November 28th is the date.
All levels of riders are welcome to join for this fun ride....This year we got a little bit longer, exciting and more
fun trail for all rider to apply their ultimate skill, technique and endurance ...the ride will cover various terrains
and plantation, scenic view for photographing paired as bonus...there will be various fun downhill , no really
lung busting climb and trains of single‐track trail , all in 1....
No steep climb, No scarry downhill, Everyone enjoy the ride..
Mountain biking ride in the tip of Johor. The event will flag off either by Tan Sri Khalid Noordin Minister of
Education or YB Ho of Johor’s Tourism EXCO.
2 months ago, YB Dato Seri Najib visited Plentong to promote home‐stay program and wants to turn Plentong
into a mountain biking paradise. It will be still long way for Plentong to achieve the goal or to be compared
alongside Kiara or Putrajaya. There is an estimate of around 200 – 300 ride in Johor Bahru currently, and this is
far too small compared with the community in KL or Penang. By organizing the event I hope to promote the
sport to locals and to get the local riding community together.
There's a bunch of us already "bitten" by the Plentong bug and will
definitely be there again this year. If anyone's interested to join us, do
drop me an email We will be signing up once the official registration
forms come out.
BTW....the description below is no BS. Truly a superb ride.

‐ Slower moving traffic stays to the left; faster traffic to the right. Never
overtake on the left of the group!
‐ Pass slower moving vehicles on the right; announce your intention to do

Announce hazards
‐ Most cyclists do not have a full view of the road while riding in a group
‐ Announce potholes and other hazards so others can avoid them
‐ Call out the hazard and point down to it, either left or right. No need to
yell like a maniac tho.
Watch for traffic from the rear
‐ The last rider should frequently check for overtaking cars
‐ Announce "car back" clearly and loudly
‐ It is also helpful to announce "car up" on narrow roads or when riding
two abreast
Watch out at intersections
‐ Leader should announce slowing or stopping at intersections, if necessary
‐ Cyclists should not follow others through intersections without first
looking for themselves

Guidelines to Mountain Bike Trail Etiquette
FROM VARIOUS SOURCES IN RELATION TO SHARED TRAILS AND NON BIKE SPECIFIC TRAILS.
PERSONAL SAFETY
1. Wear a brain bucket (yes..that’s a helmet) whenever you ride.
2. Do not travel into remote areas without informing others
3. Ride within your capabilities. Ensure that if you want to push your limits, your buddies are around to support you.
4. Know your bike and bring the necessary/essential spares.
RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHERS (NON RIDERS)
1. Give way to non motorised trail users, i.e. hikers, horse riders, because people judge all cyclist by my actions.
2. Give way to motorised trail users, i.e. motor cross bikes etc, because generally we will end up worse off in a an accident.
3. Alert others when approaching. Get a bell, or “Excuse me” works quite well.
RIGHT OF WAY IN RELATION TO OTHER RIDERS.
4. Riders have the right of way. If you are pushing your bike, leave the riding line open for others to go past.
5. Rider up hill has the right of way.
6. Allow faster riders to past
SPEED
1. Approach turns and bends in anticipation that there’s someone there.
2. Make your presence know when approaching someone or any turns.
IMPACT ON THE TRAIL
3. Leave the wildlife and fauna alone. Magic mushrooms are bad for you.
4. Stay on designated trails and avoid destroying vegetation if possible
5. Don’t take short cuts over/around technical sections. If you can’t ride it, walk it.
6. Learn how to use your front brakes so that you minimise skidding your rear wheel. If you refuse to learn, then ride only in bike parks where people are
paid to maintain the trails.
7. Do not litter. Take out whatever you take in.
8. Practise minimal impact riding, take only photos and memories with you.
FUN
9. You are to have loads of fun, talk lots of cog, and make good friends on your ride.
10. Develop of sense of humour. Some people say it’s good for the soul.
