Definitions of Business Research
 Business research is a systematic inquiry that provides information to guide managerial
decisions. More specifically, it is a process of planning, acquiring, analyzing, and
disseminating relevant data, information, and insights to decision makers in ways that
mobilize the organization to take appropriate actions that, in turn, maximize business
performance. A variety of different types of research projects are grouped under the label
‘business research’.
 Business research is a systematic and organized effort to investigate a specific problem
encountered in the work setting that needs a solution. The research provides the needed
information that guides managers to make informed decisions to successfully deal with
problems.
 Business research is an important management activity that helps companies determine
which products will be most profitable for companies to produce. Several steps are
necessary when conducting business research; each step must be thoroughly reviewed to
ensure that the best decision is made for the company.

Types of Business Research

The two main types of business research basically are:-

1. Basic Research: - (sometimes pure research) is research carried out to increase

understanding of fundamental principles. Many times the end results have no direct or
immediate commercial benefits: basic research can be thought of as arising out
of curiosity. However, in the long term it is the basis for many commercial products
and applied research. Basic research is mainly carried out by universities.

Examples of Basic Research

 The first example of basic research can be the research made by a university professor to
find the factors that lead to absenteeism due to mainly his academic interest. He may
gather data from various institutions and analyze the data. The professor may be able to
find factors such as inflexible hours and low morale primarily affecting absenteeism. So
if any organization later comes across the problem of absenteeism it can use the research
of the professor to pin point the factors that are leading towards absenteeism in a
particular work setting.
 The second example of basic research can be on how the universe came into being. This
research has taken place due to one’s own curiosity or interest. This research is not driven
by any problem and hence can easily be categorized in basic research.

2. Applied Research: - is research that is applied, accessing and using some part of the
research communities' (the academy's) accumulated theories, knowledge, methods, and
techniques, for a specific, often state, commercial, or client driven purpose. Applied
research is often opposed to pure research in debates about research ideals, programs, and
projects.

Although it is impossible to generalize completely, Applied Research deals with practical

problems and is generally empirical. Because applied research resides in the messy real
world, strict research protocols must often be relaxed. For example, it may be impossible
to use a random sample. Thus, transparency in the methodology is critical. Implications
for interpretation of results brought about by relaxing a more or less strict cannon of
methodology should also be developed.

Examples of Applied Research

 The first example could be of a treatment or cure devised by researchers for the disease of
diabetics. Diabetic is a specific problem of which the researchers have to find a solution
of. The researchers may find some medication or treatment to eliminate this disease but
that medication will only be valid for the disease of Sugar. Since this is a research for a
specific problem so this example is of applied research.
 The second example could be of the recent down turn in the Pakistan economy due to the
recent flooding. The researchers could try to find a solution to the recent down turn in the
economy of Pakistan and may as well find solutions such as reducing governmental level
expenditures or approaching the global for a fund appeal in a very effective manner. This
research will only be used for this flooding problem and hence be categorized in applied
research.
