A. Committee:

The Estate Fund College Grants Committee shall consist of five members who are in good standing with
First United Methodist Church. Four members shall be nominated by the Committee on Nominations and
Personnel and elected by Charge Conference. The Chairperson of the Work Area on Education Director
of Youth Ministry shall serve as the fifth member. The Committee shall elect a chairperson from its
membership.

It shall be the responsibility of the chairperson to schedule Committee meetings and to submit to the
Council on Ministries a request for the estate funds needed to fund the grant program.

B. Estate Fund College Grants:

The Estate Fund College Grants are educational incentives from the First United Methodist Church Estate
Fund. They shall be awarded to each approved applicant in the following grant amounts:

1. Up to but not exceeding $200 per semester for those attending a Kansas Area Vocational
Technical School or a two-year community college (grant is not to exceed $400 per academic
year).

2. Up to but not exceeding $400 per semester for those attending a four-year college or university
(grant is not to exceed $800 per academic year).

3. Up to but not exceeding $500 per semester for those attending a United Methodist University
(grant is not to exceed $1000 per academic year). In cases where the college requires a full year
of scholarship money at the beginning of the school year, such payment will be made as money
allows.

4. Grant amounts will be reduced when sufficient funding is not available for all approved
applicants.
Grants shall be awarded for the fall and spring semesters and shall not be given for more than two
semesters in any school year and for no more than four years or 8 semesters.
Individuals seeking grant funds must make application by June 1 for the Fall and Spring
semesters semester and by December 1 for the Spring semester if applying for the Spring
semester only.

C. Eligibility

1. An applicant must be a member of the Chanute First United Methodist Church and must have
been an active participant for at least two years prior to applying for the scholarship. At the
discretion of the committee, grant consideration may be given to members of the First United
Methodist Church who have lived in the Chanute area less than two years.

2. An applicant must be working on a certificate program at a Kansas Area Vocational Technical

School or must be working on an undergraduate degree program at a college or university. In all
cases, the applicant must be considered a full-time student by the school that he or she attends.

3. An applicant must furnish the Estate Fund College Grant Committee the following information by
June 1 for the Fall and by January 31st for the Spring semester if applying for the Spring semester
only. (Spring applicants who received the fall disbursement need only to submit item d.)

a. A completed application form for first time applicants or renewal application form for 2nd,
3rd or 4th year applicants. (Application forms may be obtained from the church office).

b. Proof of academic standing from applicant’s school. (GPA 2.2 minimum, cumulative or
for the prior semester).

c. A statement by the applicant of his or her career plans (included in the application
form).

d. Registration and class schedule for the upcoming semester

4. A copy of a receipt of full or partial payment of tuition for that semester needs to be submitted to
the Estate Fund College Grants Committee by September 30 for the fall semester and by January
31st for the spring semester.

5. Of primary consideration in granting an Estate Fund College Grant will be the applicant’s record
of membership and participation in the life of the Chanute First United Methodist Church.

D. Administrative Procedures:

1. The committee shall review applications and shall select grant recipients during the months of
June and December.

2. The committee shall, on or before June 30 and December 31, inform each applicant whether he or
she has been granted or denied a grant.

3. Payment shall be made on a semester basis. Applicants must submit documentation

(see C. 3-4) by September 30th for the Fall semester and January 31st for the Spring semester.
Grants will be issued within 10 30 days of receipt of complete documentation.

E. The Estate Fund College Grant Committee will not discriminate among applicants on the basis of race,
age, gender or financial need of applicant.

F. United Methodist members pursuing continued education and in need of further financial assistance may
wish to investigate the possibility of seeking a United Methodist Scholarship loan:
