The Purpose of Hajj
The Quran
َ ‫ت َم ِن اسْ َت َط‬
ً‫اع إِلَ ْي ِه َس ِبيال‬ ِ ‫َوهّلِل ِ َع َلى ال َّن‬
ِ ‫اس ِح ُّج ْال َب ْي‬
And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka'bah) is a duty that
mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses [EMQ
3:97]

َ ‫َوأَ ِتمُّو ْا ْال َح َّج َو ْالع‬


ِ ‫ُمْر َة هّلِل‬
And perform properly the Hajj and Umrah for Allah. [EMQ 2:196]

The Sunnah
ً‫ت إِ َل ْي ِه َس ِبيال‬ َ ‫اإلسْ الَ ُم … َو َت ُح َّج ْال َبي‬
َ ْ‫ْت إِ ِن اسْ َت َطع‬ ِ
“Al-Islam is Shahadah, Prayer, Zakah, Fasting and that you perform
pilgrimage to the House (of Allah) if you have the capability.”
[Muslim]
‫قصد الحج‬
The Purpose of Hajj
‫حج هو عبادة‬
Hajj is worship

ِ ‫ُخ ُذوا َع ِّنى َم َن‬


‫اس َك ُك ْم‬
The Messenger (saw) said “Take (learn) your ritual acts from me” [Ahmed]

‫ َفه َْو َر ّد‬، ‫ْس َع َل ْي ِه أَمْ ُر َنا‬


َ ‫َمنْ َع ِم َل َع َمالً َلي‬
The Messenger (saw) said “"He who does an act which our matter [Islam] is
not [in agreement] with will have it rejected."” [Muslim]

‫ُول هَّللا ِ أُسْ َوةٌ َح َس َن ٌة‬


ِ ‫ان َل ُك ْم فِي َرس‬
َ ‫َل َق ْد َك‬
Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad SAW) you have a good
example
[EMQ 33:21]
‫قصد الحج‬
The Purpose of Hajj
‫حج هو واجب‬
Hajj is obligatory (Once)

َ ‫أَ ُّي َها ال َّناسُ َق ْد َف َر‬


‫ض هَّللا ُ َعلَ ْي ُك ُم ْال َح َّج َفحُجُّ وا‬
“O people, Allah has made Hajj obligatory for you; so perform hajj.”
[Muslim]
‫شروط الحاج‬
Conditions of the Pilgrim
1. Muslim
2. Sane
3. Mature – reached puberty
4. Free – Not imprisoned
5. Capability – Wealth, Health & Security
6. Mahram – Women
‫فضائل العمرة والحج‬
The Virtues of Umrah & Hajj
1. It is one of the best deeds ‫ل‬GG‫عما‬
( ‫أل‬GG‫فضلا‬G‫)أ‬

َ ‫ُس ِئ َل أَىُّ ْال َع َم ِل أَ ْف‬


» ‫ض ُل َف َقا َل … قِي َل ُث َّم َما َذا َقا َل « َح ٌّج َم ْبرُو ٌر‬
He (saw) said: Faith… Struggle…What next? the Prophet replied: Hajj
Mabrour (an accepted pilgrimage) [Bukhari- Chapter of Hajj].

2. The best supplication is on Arafah (‫لدعاء‬GG‫)خير ا‬

‫َخ ْي ُر ال ُّد َعا ِء ُد َعا ُء َي ْو ِم َع َر َف َة‬


“The best supplication is the supplication on the day of Arafah (i.e. on
Arafah)” [Tirmidhi]

3. Hajj is the jihad for women (‫لنساء‬GG‫اد ل‬G‫لحج هو جه‬GG‫)ا‬

َ ‫ َن َع ْم َع َلي ِْهنَّ ِج َها ٌد الَ ِق َتا َل ِفي ِه ْال َح ُّج َو ْالع‬-‫ َقا َل‬- ‫« َيا َرسُو َل هَّللا ِ َع َلى ال ِّن َسا ِء ِج َها ٌد‬
» ُ‫ُمْرة‬
Narrated by Aiesha who said: “O Messenger of Allah is there jihad for
women" The Prophet said, "Yes there is jihad upon them, there is no
fighting involved in it, Hajj and Umrah” [Ibn Majah]

4. It is an expiation for sins ‫لذنوب‬GG‫ل‬


( ‫فارة‬G‫)ك‬

» ‫ْس َل ُه َج َزا ٌء إِالَّ ْال َج َّن ُة‬


َ ‫ َو ْال َح ُّج ْال َم ْبرُو ُر َلي‬، ‫ارةٌ لِ َما َب ْي َن ُه َما‬ َ ‫ُمْرةُ إِ َلى ْالع‬
َ ‫ُمْر ِة َك َّف‬ َ ‫« ْالع‬
An Umrah is expiation for the sins committed between it and the next, and“
hajj which is accepted will receive no other reward than Paradise.”
[Muslim]

The Preparation for Hajj
A Checklist even before you set off on this journey of a lifetime!
1. Fear Allah
2. Make good intention
3. Study the Rulings of Hajj
4. Give back debts or trusts
5. Use Halal earning
6. Leave worldly matters
7. Remove diseases of the heart
‫االحرام‬
Al-Ihram
The Ihram is of two types:
The Place (makaan)
The Clothes (libaas)

Ihram of the Place/Zones (‫) مكانا الحرام‬


The five Mawaqeet (Zones):
1. Dhul Hulayfah - Medina
2. Al-Juhfah – Sham/Jeddah
3. Dhatu Irq - Iraq
4. Qarn-al-Manazil - Najd
5. Yalamlam - Yemen

Meeqat : is the place from which Ihram must be worn for Umrah and Hajj
otherwise a penalty has to be paid.

The Ihram of Clothing (‫)ل باسا الحرام‬
A person that is in the state of ihram is called muhrim (masculine) and muhrimah
(feminine)

THE HAJJ CLOTHING FOR MEN‫مالبسا لحج ل لرجا ل‬


• Ridaa’ (‫)رداء‬: is the helmless towel used to cover the upper torso.
• Izaar (‫)ازار‬: is the lower towel, sometimes this is clipped on by a belt or
safety pin. It must cover between the navel and knees.
• Ni’aal ‫ل‬GG‫ا‬G‫ع‬G
( G‫)ن‬: are the slippers, the straps should not cover majority of the
feet. You cannot wear shoes of any form.

THE HAJJ CLOTHING FOR WOMEN ‫مالبسا لحج ل لنساء‬


Women’s clothes entail Khimar and Jilbab (any colour), without Niqab or gloves.

Recommended acts before putting on the ihram
1. Clip nails
2. Trim moustache
3. Shave pubic hair
4. Ghusl
5. Wudu
6. Perfume body (before putting ihram on)
7. Perfume ihram (before putting ihram on)

What is permitted in Ihram?
1. Bathing and changing
2. Women to wear shoes
3. Cupping, opening abscess, pulling a tooth
4. Wearing a belt or ring
5. Wearing non-perfumed kohl to the eyes
6. Killing flies or harmful animals
7. Sitting under the shade of a umbrella, tree or even a tent

Al-Ihram
What is prohibited in Ihram?
1. Sexual intercourse
2. Fighting or arguing
3. Wearing sewn clothes
4. Cutting the hair
5. Trimming the nails
6. Using perfumed soap
7. Wearing perfume
8. Wearing hats (men)
9. Getting engaged/Getting married
10. Hunting

You must pay a penalty if you commit any of the acts prohibited in ihram, which
will usually mean an extra sacrifice.

Three different ways to make Hajj
Hajj Al Ifrad (‫الفراد‬GG‫ ا‬G‫ – )حج‬Solely Hajj i.e. NO UMRAH
Hajj Al Qiraan (‫ن‬G‫لقرا‬GG‫ ا‬G‫ )حج‬- Umrah and Hajj with NO break in ihram
Hajj At Tamattu (G‫لتمتع‬GG‫ – )حج ا‬Umrah and Hajj with a BREAK in ihram

WE will discuss UMRAH as part of HAJJ TAMATTU

The Pillars of Umrah


1. Ihram (‫ )ا إلحرام‬the Hajj clothes
2. Tawaf‫اف‬
( ‫ )ا لطو‬circumbulation of the Ka'bah
3. Sa’ee (‫ )ا لسعي‬going between Safaa and Marwah
The only extra pillar for hajj is staying in Arafah.
We will mention other actions considered part of the Sunnah later.

Step by step guide to performing your Umrah

 Wear your ihram at the meeqat or before. Jeddah is within the zone!
 Make the intention for umrah Say “Labbaykallah Umrah”
 Say the Talbiyah till you reach Makkah and Masjid Al-Haram

The Talbiyah

َ ‫ك َو ْالم ُْل‬
‫ك‬ َ ‫ إِنَّ ْال َحمْدَ َوال ِّنعْ َم َة َل‬، ‫ك‬َ ‫ك َل َّب ْي‬
َ ‫ك َل‬ َ ‫ك اللَّ ُه َّم َل َّب ْي‬
َ ‫ َل َّب ْي‬، ‫ك‬
َ ‫ك الَ َش ِري‬ َ ‫ َل َّب ْي‬،
‫ك‬َ ‫ك َل‬ َ ‫الَ َش ِري‬
“Labbaik Allahumma labbaik, labbaika la shareeka laka labbaik, innal hamda
wanne'matah laka wal mulk, la shareeka laka”
“Here I am, O Allah! Here I am; Here I am, there is no partner unto You, Here I am; all
praise and favours and sovereignty belongs to You, there is no partner unto You.”

Step by step guide to performing your Umrah

 Enter Masjid Al Haram through any gate. Stop saying the Talbiyah.
 Enter with the right foot. Say the dua
 “Allahhum maftah li abwaba rahmatik”

Step by step guide to performing your Umrah

 Men make Al Idtibaa’ (‫)ا الضطباع‬


 Go straight to Al Hajr Al Aswad ‘The Black Stone’
 and start your tawaf from there.
 Make tawaf anti-clockwise seven times
 No two rakat salat for the masjid before tawaf

Tawaf Al-Qadoum (‫)طوافا لقدوم‬


The Circumambulation of Arrival

Dua supplication during Tawaf

“Subhanallah, walhamdulillah, wala ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, wala hawla wala
quwwata illa billah”
“Glory be to Allah, All praise is to Allah, there is no god but Allah. There is no power
and no strength except in Allah.”

Dua when passing Yemeni Corner (‫)ا لركنا ليماني‬


”Rabbana aatina fidduniya hasanah wa fil aakhirati hasanah wa qina azaban nar “
“O Allah, our Lord, give us good in this world, and good in the Hereafter, and save us
from the punishment of fire.”

Step by step guide to performing your Umrah

 During tawaf may make any dua you want in any language
 The Sunnah is to hurry Ramal in the first three tawaf and the last four
should be done at ease.
 You must have wudu for tawaf

 Pray 2 Rakat Nafilah behind Maqam Ibrahim


 Prophet prayed Surah Al Kafiroun & Al Ikhlas
 Do not pray in jamah
 Drink Zam-Zam water

SA’EE (Safaa & Marwah) ‫ا لسعيب ينا لصفا وا لمروة‬
 Go to Mount Safa
 Face the Qibla
 Make Dua ِ ‫آ ِئ ِر هّللا‬G‫ َع‬G ‫ل َمرْ َو َة ِمن َش‬GG‫ا‬
ْ ‫ا َو‬G‫ص َف‬
َّ ‫ل‬GG‫ َّنا‬Gِ‫إ‬
Verily! Safaa & Al Marwah are of the Symbols of Allah.

SA’EE (Safaa & Marwah) ‫ا لسعيب ينا لصفا وا لمروة‬
 Make the following dua three times

‫هللا أكبر هللا أكبر هللا أكبر‬


ُ ‫ك َولَ ُه ْال َحمْ ُد يُحْ ِيى َو ُيم‬
‫ِيت َوه َُو َعلَى ُك ِّل َشىْ ٍء َقدِي ٌر‬ َ ‫الَ إِلَ َه إِالَّ هَّللا ُ َوحْ َدهُ الَ َش ِر‬
ُ ‫يك لَ ُه لَ ُه ْالم ُْل‬
َ ‫ص َر َعبْدَ هُ َو َه َز َم األَحْ َز‬
ُ‫اب َوحْ َده‬ َ ‫الَ إِلَ َه إِالَّ هَّللا ُ َوحْ َدهُ أَ ْن َج َز َوعْ دَ هُ َو َن‬
“Allah is Great! Allah is Great! Allah is Great! There is none worthy of
worship except Allah alone, no partner has He, for him is the
sovereignty and the praise, gives life and brings death, and he is able to
do all things. There is none worthy of worship except Allah alone, … ,
He helps his servants, He dealt with the confederate alone”

SA’EE (Safaa & Marwah) ‫ا لسعيب ينا لصفا وا لمروة‬
 Walk towards Mount Marwah
 Hurry in green zone
 Face Qibla at Marwah and make dua
 This completes one cycle
 Now go to safa…complete seven cycles
 Finish on Mount Marwah (Note: If Wudu breaks you can continue).

Trim Hair/Taqsir (‫)ا لتقصير‬
• Once you have finished the Sa'ee, cut your hair; it is symbolic of
leaving the ihram of the clothes
• Only shorten hair in Umrah, and leave shaving for when you do Hajj
• Women do not shave the hair rather they take an inch off the end of
their plait

 You no longer have to wear ihram and are free from it’s conditions
 You have now completed your Umrah

Al-Hajj – Day 1
8th Dhul Hijjah - Yawmul Tarwiyyah
 Make Ihram in Makkah
 Recommended do ghusl first
 Say “Labbaykallah Hajj”
 Pray Fajr in Makkah
 Go to Mina
 You must be in Ihram
 Zhuhr and Asr shortened not combined.
 You will do the same with Maghrib and Isha
 Stay the night in Mina

Al-Hajj – Day 2
9th Dhul Hijjah – Yawmul Arafah
 Pray Fajr in Mina
 Go to Arafah
 Pray Zuhr & Asr at Arafah shorten/comb
 Masjid Namira - Khutbah
 Make Dua
 Stay till sunset
 Go to Muzdalifah
Laa ilaha ilallah,“
wahdahu laa shareeka
lahu, lahul mulku wa
lahul hamd, wa huwa ala
.kulli shayyin qadr

Al-Hajj – Day 2
9th Dhul Hijjah – Mudalifah
 Pray Maghrib & Isha Shorten/Comb
 Stay there till Fajr
 There are no tents there
 Collect stones from Muzdalifah to stone the Jamaraat.
 7 for day 1
 21 for day 2
 21 for day 3
 Subtotal = 49
 +21 if you stay an extra day total = 70
 Women/Elderly may leave before Fajr

Al-Hajj – Day 3
10th Dhul Hijjah – Yamun Nahr
 This day is Eid al Adha
 Pray Fajr in Muzdalifah
 Go to Mina making Talbiyah
 Pray Zuhr in Mina
 Go to Wadi Muhasr (Place of Jamraat)
 Stone the Large Jamrah ONLY
 Say Allahu Akbar each time
 Makkah on left Mina on right

Al-Hajj – Day 3
10th Dhul Hijjah – Yamun Nahr
 After Stoning
 Make Sacrifice/Qurbani
 Shave hair (Men) or Trim (Women)
 You can remove the ihram
 Go to Makkah
 Make Tawaf Al Ifaadah, No Idtibaa
 No Need to pray 2 Rakah Maqam Ibrahim
 Make Saee
 Leave Makkah before Midnight
 All is halal now even relationships

Al-Hajj – Day 4
11th Dhul Hijjah – Stoning Day 2
 Pray Fajr and Zuhr in Mina
 Go to stone the 3 Jamaraat
 Stone the small Jamrah
 Make Dua facing qibla
 Stone the Middle Jamrah
 Make Dua facing qibla
 Finally stone the Large Jamrah
 No Dua
 Remember Makkah is to left and Mina is to right when stoning
 Stay the night in Mina

Jamarat
‫الحج‬
Al-Hajj – Day 5
12th Dhul Hijjah – Stoning Day 3
 Stone all three Jamraat like previous day
 Leave Mina before Maghrib and go to Makkah
 Optional to stay one further night in Mina and do stoning the following day
LEAVING MAKKAH

• Tawaful Wadaa’ is the farewell tawaf for when you leave Makkah.
• There is no prayer behind Makam Ibrahim for this tawaf
• Upon completion of Tawaful Wadaa’ you must leave Makkah

Ibn Abbas (ra) said, “The Messenger (saw) said the last thing you do in Makkah after mina is to
leave Makkah”

THIS NOW COMPLETES YOUR HAJJ
