spirituals. Except this time, many of the squatters in the
crowd were pushing baby strollers instead of barricades.
And unlike the old days, the cops showed little interest in
policing the crowd, even when the marchers invaded the site
of a former community garden on Avenue C that was bull-
dozed for condos. A security guard shrieked as the marchers
clawed up a patch of weedy earth and planted a “spiral” of
Allium bulbs in Shenker’s honor.
After stops on Eighth and Seventh Sts., the march con-
cluded on E. Third St. at Maryhouse, the soup kitchen and
theater run by the Catholic Worker.
People sang folk songs and listened to old tapes of
Shenker banging out rhythm and blues on the piano —
reminding me of the early days of squatting, before all the
bars saturated the nabe, when folks here used to entertain
themselves.
Though I knew Shenker was involved with the Living
Theatre, it was surprising to learn that he was a musical
director for the troupe from 1989 to 1993 — during some
of the most contested years of the squatting movement.
But it makes sense, his frenetic merging of art and activ-
ism.
This past Sunday, friends hosted a benefit at the Sixth

VillageCare takes wraps off new Houston St. building

BY ALBERT AMATEAU
The new VillageCare Rehabilitation and Nursing Center
had its official opening Thursday morning Oct. 21 at 214 W.
Houston St., west of Sixth Ave. The six-story, state-of-the-art
building, with accommodations for 105 inpatients, will be
ready for its first residents the second week in November.
The new building replaces the old Village Nursing Home at
Hudson and W. 12th Sts.
VillageCare President Emma DeVito welcomed more
than 100 guests to the opening of the community-based not-
for-profit facility.
Guests of honor included state Senator Tom Duane, chair-
person of the Senate Health Committee; and Assemblymember
Deborah Glick, who recalled the long planning process that
went into the creation of the first newly built nursing center
for Manhattan seniors in 50 years.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn could not attend,
but her aide Noah Isaacs presented a Council proclamation
honoring the occasion.
Mayor Bloomberg also sent a message of congratulations
to VillageCare, which serves 13,000 people a year, including
seniors at the new building and people living with H.I.V./
AIDS at other Downtown locations.
Four floors of the new building will accommodate short-
term rehabilitation patients; one floor will have accommoda-
tions for palliative care and end-of-life patients. Rooms and
staff will provide cardiac, joint-replacement and amputee
rehabilitation. Each floor will have public rooms for patients
and their visiting friends and families. A ground-floor gym
will offer state-of-the-art physical therapy equipment.
The new building replaces a parking garage that was for-
merly on the site. It’s across the street from the Film Forum Photo by Albert Amateau

decades, N.Y.U. will provide a space for a new and much-
needed elementary school for the neighborhood; create new
green space and recreational space where there is none now;
alter the landscaping of the two superblocks so that under-
used areas of open space are actually accessible to the public;
and help meet N.Y.U.’s academic needs for the future.
And there’s a broader point: Greenwich Village, like all
our neighborhoods, is part of a city. If Greenwich Village is
going to prosper, the city will need to prosper. That’s going to
require a talented workforce and people with ideas.
In other words, exactly the kind of people that major,
thriving universities around the globe attract.
N.Y.U. has come a long way as a university — from a regional
university to a major research university of significant interna-
tional stature. It’s a rare achievement in the field of higher educa-

But from our experience with St. Vincent’s Hospital,
we in the Village know all too well that institutions are not

being pilloried for its development proposals; who in the

THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER

Edgar Allan Poe came into this world in 1809 and left
it in 1849 — but his macabre tales refuse to die. This
Halloween, Pluto Unleashed Productions will celebrate Poe’s
creepy legacy with a theatrical exploration of one of his best-

by John Zurek). “The Fall of the House of Usher” concerns
a spooky old house, a brother mourning his dead (?) sister,
and various creepy goings-on as experience by a narrator

No question about it: Bumper crop of kids enjoy Harvest

Hundreds of Village kids celebrated Jefferson Market Garden’s 35th season at the Children’s Harvest Festival. Citarella provided free pumpkins for all, the New York
Public Library took care of the entertainment and Kids at Work brought special crafts. The NYC Law Enforcement Explorers Troop Post 2206 at the Sixth Precinct volun-
teered as Harvest Helpers. Mary Giannusa organized the whole event.
