OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR,
November, 2010
PYiRERSCALLAWORRAY
Dear Ms. Santucci:
‘Thon you for contacting my office segarding your concerts about the large retwining wall that wes originally
designed foc the Cabin Joba Middle School replacement project, and for your questions regarding wheal the
project had been approved by the Board of Public Works. It is my understanding that since the spring of this
‘year, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has been respnsive to the concerns raised by community
‘members and has re-designed the retaining wall in a manmer tha is aoveptable tothe eorsmurity.
AS you may be aware, Cabin John Middle Schoo! was submitted by MCPS for Stale funding suppor in the FY
2011 Capital Improvement Prograus (CIP) in the autumn of 2009. Althoug! the Interagency Convnitlee on
‘School Construction (LAC), the five-member group that has been assigned responsibility for administralion of
the State’s Public Schoo! Construction Program (PSCP), found that the project was eligible for both planing
‘and fanding approval, it did not receive approval in the FY 2011 CIP because of fiscal constraints. The project
‘has beer: se-submitted for planring and funding approval in the FY 2012 CI, and is pow being evaluated for
eligibility. A determination of eligibility in the next few months may lead to @ recommendation for apzaroval,
depending on the amount of ning that is available statewide for public selnol construction in FY 2012.
_As Govertior, Ihave placed high emphasis on the importance of school buildings in supporting the role ofthe
teacher and in establishing the chareeter and stability of communities. 1 wish wo express my appreciation for
‘your conwem: for the quality of school buildings in your commpnity, and. I hope that. with the involvement. of.
citizens like yourself, Maryland will eontinve to build schoo! facilites that will meet the complex needs of our
students, our communities, end our Ioeal govertunents.
Sincerely.
