Our climate and geographical region is very much like the
British Isles. We are monotheistic and the people of Lyonesse pray independently in their homes. We are dedicated agriculturists, fishermen, and miners. Our main crops are grapes for wine production. Because we are almost surrounded by water, fish is a big part of our diet. Living so close to water gives us an advantage and allows us to trade with other nations. Our people are all raised as solders to fight and then given a job in our 3 areas of production agriculture, fishing, and mining. This is the story of how we came to be and the way we are now.
ACT 1—The Creation
In the background will be a picture of flames on the power point. All characters off stage except Lyonno, The Lion God (Casey). Have lights dimmed and only on Lyonno until he creates the world. Then flick them all on so to show the beginning of all things. Casey wears a sign that says Lyonno, Kelcy wears a sign that says Yaoni, and Steven wears a sign that says Leon. Narrator: In the beginning, there was one God. Change Slide. There is no story of his origin, only that he was the one to settle the chaos of the world before time was time. By his will, he set out to create a people to worship him. He first lay out the land of Lyonesse, Change Slide. (Casey waves her arms around slowly and mysteriously) a large peninsula stretching out to sea. (Kelcy flicks on lights at this point). It is said this land was the first of the rest of the world, the oldest of grass, trees, and all manners of creatures. Lyonno, seeing the rich resources to be pulled from the land, finally set to the creation of those who would serve him. From his mane, the Lion God pulled an ancient fire and bore Yaoni and Leon. Change Slide. (Lyonno (Casey) ruffles her hair and pretends to pull out a great fire, Yaoni (Kelcy) and Leon (Steven) leap on to stage and kneel in front of Lyonno). Unwilling to deal with the hindrance of ruling a kingdom, Lyonno bade them to be Queen and King of Lyonesse. (Casey uses sword to ‘knight’ Kelcy and Steven). As time goes on, Lyonno grows impatient with the slow populating process of Lyonesse, and grants Yaoni the power to fuse fire with the elements of the land to conceive people in his image. Change Slide. He warns her to use this gift only in time of need. (Lyonno pulls Yaoni to the side and waves a hand over her face, then wags finger at her in warning). Unwilling to allow power to slip from his children, Lyonno grants Yaoni and Leon immortality. (Yaoni and Lyonno rejoin Leon and Lyonno waves hands all around the couple. Yaoni and Leon fist pump and high five). Trusting in his children to do what is necessary for the kingdom, Lyonno leaves and goes back whence he came. (Lyonno pats their heads, waves, and leaves. Perhaps tap dance out). Yaoni, eager to begin her task, bids Leon to leave her to work in peace. (Leon bows, kisses her hand, and leaves. Yaoni sets up play-doh and fire on the table and begins). Change Slide. First, gathering minerals and coal from the earth, she fuses them with fire, representing the fire that bore her and the King of Lyonesse. From this, she created the Miners. (Show Yaoni rummaging around the room and gathering things to bring back to the fire. Danielle grabs a Miner sign and skulks on stage remember to continue to look abused and angry). Yaoni, realizing to rule a kingdom one must have a kingdom of rule from, set the miners to building a castle worthy of the children of Lyonno. Mistreated (show Leon kicking the miner, someone pushes the miner over) and abused, the miners dug deep into the earth under the castle, fashioning passageways for their own use in time. Change Slide. Some say they dug so deep that Earth whispered secrets to them in the dark, making them the wisest of creatures in the land. (The miner slinks off to the side of stage slowly, casting dark looks around the room keep sign on). Change Slide. Next, Yaoni fused the root of grape vines and fire. What emerged was a farmer, one who would supply the wine for Lyonno, the God of Poison, and his people, as well as care for the land and creatures surrounding the castle of Lyonesse. (Again, Yaoni digs around the room and returns to the fire, pulling out a farmer. Cady grabs a ‘farmer’ sign and pops out and waves remember to continue to look happy). Favored by Leon (show Leon patting back of the farmer, shaking hands, smiling, ect.), he allowed the farmers to keep their fill of milk from the cows, grapes from the vines that spilled out of the fields, and game that fled from the woods. He only asked that what was left over was sent to the castle for the workers inside. (Leon leads farmer over by the miner, still smiling, talking in whispers, look like they are conspiring keep signs on Leon comes back to the middle of the stage). Change Slide. Finally, to tend to the restless sea, Yaoni took the dwindling flames and threw fish bones inside. What transpired was a fisherman. Intelligent but simple people (Casey grabs a fisherman sign and walks on stage, writes E=mc 2 on the board, tap their temple and smile into the distance act mysterious and wise), they gathered to the boarders of Lyonesse. Separate from the kingdom, they only ventured to the castle to present their share of food once every few weeks. (Have farmer fishermen, and miner come out, Leon standing by the farmer, the miner skulking and the fisherman looking uncaring in the corner). The King recognized the fisherman as a politically unbiased part of Lyonesse. Their power over the ocean surrounding the peninsula secretly frightened him, and not wanting to upset them, he left them to their ways. (They all walk of stage. Casey quickly grabs the LYONNO sign and walks over by Kelcy. Kris pauses until Casey is ready and on stage) Lyonno, watching, finds Yaoni’s work satisfying and visits her in a dream. Telling her she has done well, he asks her to put the flames away and allow for the land to prosper naturally. (Yaoni continues to sit. Lyonno hovers over her smiling. Kris turns off lights). The lights go down, the fire is taken away, and the stage empties.
ACT II: YEARS LATER
(On stage is Kelcy behind table Cady and Danielle under the table Steven is standing next to Kelcy Casey is standing off to the side) Narrator: Change Slide. Many years later in the immortal lives of Yaoni and Leon, they bare two children; twins. (Have Yaoni standing behind a table, then Lihear (Danielle) and Lihan (Cady) jump up from under the table, wearing signs to show audience who they are). With the blessing of Lyonno (show Lyonno exaggeratedly blessing the twins), they were named Lihear (Danielle waves) and Lihan (Cady waves, Leon scowls at her. Casey and Kelcy leave and put on enemy signs). Change Slide. As the twins grow and prosper, as does the land of Lyonesse. The crops flourish, the animals multiply and are plentiful, and the health of the people has never been better. Change Slide. Unbeknownst to the siblings, savages and kingdoms surrounding Lyonesse look upon them with envy. Bitterness erupts between Leon and kings of distant lands, Leon unwilling to trade away the resources that have made them so rich. (Show Leon standing in front of the twins and glaring at Kelcy and Casey with enemy signs). Change slide. Finally, in the dead of night, a neighboring kingdom snuck into Lyonesse and attacked. War ensued. (Have lights low to symbolize darkness. Leon (Steven), Lihear (Danielle), and Lihan (Cady) burst on stage brandishing swords at Casey, Kristen, Kelcy, (all wearing enemy signs) and perhaps members of the audience. Continue fighting). The fight continues through the night, but the warriors of Lyonesse manage to defend their land and resources. Just as dawn is about to break, (Have lights come up), a sword sinks into the back of Lihear, the favored son of Leon. Change Slide. (An enemy Kristen comes behind Lihear and shoves sword into his back. Leon kills Kristen and sinks to the floor beside Lihear in mourning. Lihan comes over and sinks to the floor as well to mourn his brother, but the King leaps up and shoves Lihan away). (The lights dim and all members leave stage but Leon. When the lights come up, Leon is pacing restlessly, gesturing angrily. Have miner come on stage and Leon silently yelling at him, pushing him around). As time goes on, the King, bitter from the loss of his favored son, grows reckless with the managing of the kingdom. He focuses solely on making the people of Lyonesse better warriors, working them harder than before. Taking his anger out on Lihan, (Show Leon yelling at Lihan, Lihan shrinking away from his father), the final twin alienates his father and his purpose as a warrior, disappearing into the depths of the castle never to be seen again. (Lihan goes off stage). Change Slide. One day, watching over the kingdom, Leon grows furious at the weakness left in his people. He hatches a plan to save his kingdom of that remaining weakness so that they do not have to suffer the loss he has endured. (Have Leon gather cripples and sick; DON’T WEAR SIGNS Casey limping, Danielle coughing and acting sick. They sit down at the table with goblets. The King smiles and raises his cup to the two girls. They drink, pause, and fall from their chairs, dead). Using poisoned wine, Leon sets down the path of ridding Lyonesse of every last cripple and sick person, dedicating their deaths to Lyonno. (Show the King standing over the bodies of the girls and raise his glass to the heavens). Change Slide. Blinded by his quest, Leon allows this ritual to be seen by Timptos, a worker in the castle and a leader to the miners. (Cady peeks on stage and watches Casey and Danielle die the dead girls get up and walk off stage). Enraged, Timptos gathers the miners and begins to plot against Leon, knowing now that their King is unable to continue ruling as he has for so long. (Casey wears a farmers sign and walks on stage) In the attempt to gather more warriors, Timptos tries to persuade a friend who works as a farmer just outside the castle walls. (Show Timptos (Cady) talking to a farmer (Casey), almost pleading). Unrelenting, the farmer refuses; the King and Queen have always looked upon them in favor. Not wanting to provoke the powers of the son and daughter of Lyonno, the farmer refuses to help. (Show Timptos bow head as farmer walks off stage. Leon meets the farmer at the edge of the stage, winks at the audience, and leads the farmer away). (Clear stage of all but Leon). Change Slide. Back in the castle, the King is approached by Alves, the goddess of temptation. (Alves (Danielle) struts on stage and circles Leon). Jealous of the bond between Leon and Yaoni, the goddess decides to entice Leon. Powerless to her wiles, Leon follows Alves. (Alves leads Leon off stage). Yaoni, hidden in shadow, watches the pair go off together. (Show Yaoni holding her stomach and watching them go off). Furious, and pregnant with their third child, she vows revenge upon the King. ACT III: SIX MONTHS LATER (The lights dim. Yaoni and the King are on stage when the lights go up. She is holding a bundle in her arms, the King is striding around, agitated, throwing dark glances at the bundle in her arms). Change Slide. Six months later, Yaoni has their third child. From the moment the King lay eyes on their third son, he was enraged. The baby had a deformed leg, it was crippled. Seeing his anger, and for fear of Leon killing their baby, Yaoni sends her son off. (Leon goes off stage. Yaoni rushes to the edge of the stage and hands baby to ANYONE’S outstretched of arms). When the King returns, Yaoni, in despair, tells him that the baby was premature and died in the night. Satisfied, Leon leaves Yaoni to mourn. (Leon exits stage). Change Slide. Yaoni finally decides it is time to do something about her husband’s killings and seeks Timptos. Gathering the flames of Lyonno once more, Yaoni set to creating more people for their army. (Show Yaoni and Timptos come to agreement and leave. The King returns). The King continues his poisoning, though word reaches his ear of his Queen’s plotting. (Danielle runs out and whispers something into the King’s ear and leaves again). Saddened, but knowing he must only do what is necessary, the King prays for the help of Pitas, the god of war to help him in what he knows will be the final battle. (Show King praying, Casey comes on, nods, thumbs up, and smiles. She is wearing the “Pitas” sign). (Lights dim, when they come up again, Leon (Steven), Pitas (Casey), Timptos (Cady), and Yaoni (Kelcy), and Danielle (random person without a sign who can choose side) are facing off. Gather people from the audience if there are extra weapons. The battle ensues, allow them to fight for a while. Kill people off until Timptos, Leon, and Yaoni are the only ones left). Change Slide. Leon and Timptos, exhausted from fighting, and looking over the devastation, call a truce. (Yaoni and Timptos comfort each other as they stare down at their dead fellow warriors). As Leon stared down at the dead, he felt a crushing as he had not since his son, Lihear died. He realizes what he has done to his kingdom, and the scores of people he has slain. Not knowing what else to do, Leon turns his sword on himself (Leon kills himself). Change Slide. Yaoni, upset over her Husband’s death, but still wanting what is best for the kingdom, allows Timptos to become King of Lyonesse. (Yaoni bows head to Timptos the dead stand up and everyone except Timptos leaves the stage). Timptos, wary of Yaoni’s power and immortality, locks her away in a dungeon in the deepest part of the castle. Yaoni, cold and scared in the dark, fears what else may be with her. She prays to Lyonno, but hears nothing. (Yaoni is huddled in a corner, praying. Lyonno (Casey) hovers nearby but shakes head and leaves the stage). Lyonno watches over her sadly, knowing this must be her punishment. Lyonno mourns his son’s death and does not like that she used her power to gain leverage over the war between them. Change Slide. Without Yaoni’s guidance, Timptos falters in his command over Lyonesse. He was not born to rule, but to lead the miners in every day work. Still angry from Leon’s treatment of the miners, Timptos tries to rule as Leon would not. Working the people harder than ever not only as warriors but in their jobs as well, the people begin to suffer from illnesses and the earth suffers under the constant toil, leading to famine. Under Timptos’ reign, Lyonesse begins to fall to ruin. (Casey with Isaac sign stands on other side of stage and paces) Miles away, one man hears of the depths Lyonesse has begun to sink and he despairs. Not having heard word from his mother in months, the man begins the long journey back to Lyonesse. Change Slide. Knowing from his childhood the secret caves dug by the miners, Isaac found his way to the castle, and in the darkness, his mother, Yaoni. (Show Isaac (Casey) walking throughout the room, finally stopping at Yaoni and freeing her. Yaoni embraces Isaac). Seeing their once beautiful village become dust in the wind, Yaoni, enraged, helps Isaac ambush Timptos. (Timptos is sitting at the table; Yaoni and Isaac come up behind and seize him. Timptos begs for his life). Begging with them for his life, Timptos pleads innocence until his last breath, when Isaac thrusts a sword into his chest. (Timptos dies, and Isaac places the crown on his head). Change Slide. Time goes on with Isaac as the ruler of Lyonesse, a better King than his father. Yaoni uses her power once more to build up the population of the kingdom.
