Characterisics of polymers
-:Polymers are also known as macro molecules.

-:Polymers are semi crystalline materials.

-:Polymers material are tailor weight.

-:Polymers depend on
1: size and shape of polymers.
2:the presence or absence of intramolecular
forces.
-:Generally polymers are thermal and electrical
insulators.
Funtionality
Functionality means the number of non bonding
sites.
-:When the functionality of monomer is two
linear or straight chain polymer molecule is
formed.

-:When the functionality of monomer is free

three dimensional network polymer is formed.

-:When a tri functional monomer is mixed in

small amount with a bi functional monomer a
branched chain polymer is formed.
Difference between thermoplastic
and thermosetting resins
Thermoplastics Thermosets

1:they are formed either by 1:They are formed by

addition or by condensation condensation polymerisation
polymerisation reaction. reaction.

2:they have either linear or 2:they hav three dimensional

branch structures. cross linked structure.

3:they can be recycled . 3:they cannot be recycled.

4:adjacent polymer chain are 4:adjacent polymer chains are

held together by either vander held together by strong
wall forces or by dipole forces. covelent bond.
Based on tacticity
Polymer Description
Isotactic side groups are all on the same
side.
syndiotactic Arrangement of side group is in
alternating fashion
atactic Arrangement of side group is at
random around the main chain

Isotactic syndiotactic and atactic polymers have the same

poly chemical structure but because of there different configuration
they exhibit entirely different properties.Isotactic and syndiotactic
polymers are high melting and less soluble while atactic polymer
are camparatively low melting and easily soluble this is because
sterio regular polymer can easily crystallise(isotactic and sydiotactic).
Fibers Elastomers and plastics
Fibers
They are thin long thread like materials which have great
tensile strength

Elastomers
The elastomers possess es the tendency to recover there
orignal shape after they have been greatly deformed.

Plastics
Broadly speaking plastic can be of two general kinds
thermoplastic and thermosettings polymers.
Conducting polymers
A polymer which can conduct electricity is known as
conducting polymer.
EXAMPLES::
Polyaniline -::is used to make rechargeable batteries in the
shape as flat buttons or as laminated rolled films.

Polypyrrol -:: is used in smart windows .these smart

windows can change there colour in response changes in
temperature or amount of sunlight.
