27 complete Raleigh Citizens Leadership Academy

Congratulations to the 27 people who recently completed all three modules of the Raleigh Citizens Leadership Academy. Each graduate will receive the Leadership Plaque and special recognition during the Raleigh Neighborhood Exchange on Sept. 24. The Community Services Department offers the Citizens Leadership Academy each spring and fall for people who want to take more active roles in the community. The academy is broken into three modules of four classes each, meaning residents can complete the entire program over the course of a year. Classes cover communication skills, neighborhood organization and leadership styles. Many of those who complete the program go on to take leadership positions in their neighborhood and community groups. Also, the Community Services Department forwards the names of graduates to the Raleigh City Council as people who might be interested in appointment to advisory boards and commissions. The next session of Citizens Leadership Academy starts Sept. 8. To register, go to www.surveymonkey.com/s/citizensleadershipacademy or call 996-6100. Classes are filling quickly, so anyone who signs up after fall enrollment is complete will join the waiting list for the spring 2012 session. Citizens Leadership Academy is one of several programs sponsored by Community Services to help residents become more engaged citizens. The others include Raleigh Neighborhood College, which educates residents about the workings of City government, and the Neighborhood Exchange, an annual conference for people interested in building better neighborhoods. Learn more about these programs at www.raleighnc.gov/communityservices or call 996-6100. The Rev. Michael Oakley has been appointed to the City of Raleigh Human Relations Commission. The commission serves as an advisory board to the City Council. It promotes activities, education and programs that enhance human dignity, respect and harmony among Raleigh citizens. Two members of the Raleigh Senior Corps were honored as Unsung Heroes during the organizations annual banquet May 6: Doris Kruger, who volunteers as a receptionist in the Volunteer Services Office of Rex Healthcare, and James Hawkins, who works with children at Wandas Little Hands. Ms. Kruger is a retired bank vice president. She joined the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program more than 16 years ago. Mr. Hawkins is a retired truck driver for a moving company and has been a Foster Grandparent for 11 years. The Senior Corps enlists people who are 55 or over in the RSVP and Foster Grandparent Program. Over the past year, Senior Corps members logged more than 150,000 hours in work worth more than $3.2 million. To learn more about RSVP and the Foster Grandparent Program, call 996-5727.
