Trip Report: Colorado River Canoe Trip 11/6/2010 (Las Vegas Canoe Club) Departing Willow Beach on the Colorado River.
The Las Vegas Canoe Club left on a 2 day, 14 mile downriver trip. There were six
of us. We where picked up by Helen who owns Desert River Outfitters. A 30 minute
shuttle ride that took us across the recently opened bridge at Hoover Dam. What a
time saver that was. We had a late start, so that made up lots of time.
We unloaded the canoes and stowed our gear, food and firewood. There was
only a breath of air so we launched in nearly flat calm water. This section of river has
little current. Willow Beach is actually about 11 river miles south of Hoover Dam.
Launching at Willow Beach, we were heading south to Nelson’s Landing, 14 river
miles south. The Landing and river edge community long since washed away in a
devastating flash flood that came surging down the normally dry wash in 1974.
We made about 4 miles of the 14 total and some in the group wanted to stop and
make camp. That was to be a ill fated decision.
We set up camp and enjoyed what was left of the afternoon, and evening. The
temperature was pleasant. We shared the campfire, food and stories. Recanted sights Oh No! Mr Bill the Fire Marshall…. Hates Campfires!
we had seen coming downriver. On the water the terrain is seen more in detail and
up-close. Birds, fish, critters on the bank and the occasional Petroglyph if one takes
the time to find them. To some people, passing the area in a car, one might think the
area stark and lifeless.
The next morning we were on the water at 9:30am with Helen scheduled to pick
us up 10 more miles down river. We immediately had head winds of around
25MPH. These winds were not predicted. The next 10 miles were physically ex-
hausting. Our last canoe full of members pulling in around 5pm in the dark.

Our Home
Dutch Oven Gathering
Three weeks before Christmas Our home is in Eastern Washington Bring your gun and a box of shells
And we’re bored in a fog. With a clear and sunny sky. And take the kids out shooting.
Then Bill pipes up, Where you can be They’ll learn some skills
Lets have a DOG. As wild and free And have some thrills
As the birds when they all fly. While city kids are looting.
Now its Saturday
And all thru the yard, To the uninformed traveler We till and plant our gardens
The cooks were scurrying Passing through our land When the soil warms.
And working so hard. Where the Sage Brush grow Veggies are best
And the tumbleweeds blow When they’re fresh
Fireboxes and tables All they see is heat and sand.
Were setup with care, We can the rest before the winter storms.
The ground is all white If you think Washington is mold & rain
And there’s snow in the air. We love to see a summer storm
There is something I need to tell you. Others think they’re frightening.
The east side is clear With a great big flash
The cooks were all careful
Most of the year And thunder crash
To fill their Dutch Oven,
And the east side isn’t Bellevue. We sit and watch the lightning.
Now make room pals
There’ll be no shovin’.
In spring we till and plant our fields Look out at the winter sky
Tanya said hey Rob With expensive fuel and seed. And see an approaching storm.
The Kingsford is glowing, Then sprinklers run The North wind blows
So we put up a big tarp Under hot summer sun The drifting snows
Because it’s still snowing. There’s a hungry world to feed. And we’re inside nice and warm.
We added more coals Saddle up your trusty horse The kids all take off and go to college
It was clear to me, And you can ride for hours. Surrounded but feeling alone.
We needed more heat Ride and train In the city life
Because it’s minus 4 degrees. After spring time rain With all of its strife
And see all the wild flowers. They long for their Eastern Washington
The food has been cooking home.
We have all done our best, Ride your horse early in summer
Should we trust the timer Go as soon as you awake. My wife has cooked a great dinner
Or use the smell test. Don’t make him run And we all sit down to eat.
In the blazing sun Thank god for the meal
The lids have been lifted But swim him in the lake That has lots of appeal
Its now time to eat, Every day this is where we all meet.
The main dishes are savory Grab some bait and fishing pole
And deserts are sweet. Take the kids to a nearby lake. So mister raise your children
At evening light Where they'll be free to roam.
Some want to know The fish will bite With your loving wife
When is Dutch Oven season, And we always limit our take. Make a happy life
If I wake up breathing
In your Eastern Washington home.
That’s all I need for a reason.
