Greetings Sisters and Brothers!
Financial Report 2
The new year has begun and I pray that this has been an outstanding year for you so far. I

also pray that those commitments you made to make a change in your life are still working
for you. Parish Nurse 3, 4

But, here we are in February already. When I think about February, I think about catching Activities 4, 5, 6
my breath from the holiday season. I think about the shortest month of the year and how 7

quickly March will arrive. I think about that day smack dab in the middle and what in the
world am I going to do with it. I am talking about Valentine's Day. That day set aside for us Great Lakes Scrip

When I think about telling the people I love how much they mean to me, I am always struck Tableau fundraiser 4
by how God expresses His love for me. I first reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made on my be-
half. The way that He gave so much of Himself so that I might live, so that I might have
eternal life; so that I might spend eternity in the presence of the Triune God. Then I think
about the Gospels. (For those of you participating in my Bible Challenge, you spent the ma-
jority of January reading all of these.) I think about all the parables, the lessons, the advice
that my Savior gave me. I do not look at them as rigid rules of control. Rather, I see them as
a loving Messiah giving me sage wisdom. Wisdom, that if followed, will not control me; but
give me peace. It will not give me a perfect life, but a life connected to a never ending sup- 02/01 Joe Ernst

others. I find great freedom and wonderful love in those Gospels. 02/02 Violet Dyer

them for extraordinary missions. When they showed up and paid attention, God did marvel-
ous and miraculous wonders through them and I find great encouragement in that.
We talked this month during worship how God typically works within the ordinary. Sisters
and brothers...that is us. God gave us Scripture as God's love story for us. God showed us
time and time again how much we are loved and valued and needed by God. God uses regu-
lar people, people like you and me, to accomplish extraordinary feats. I tell you all of this to 02/06 Edith & Nicholas

God gave us the Scriptures for many reasons. One of which is to express to us how much we
are valued and loved. Be active in your relationship with the Triune God. Let God shower
you with His gifts. Let God love you like no one else can. Then share those gifts, experi-
ences, and love with others.
Please do not allow Valentine's Day to be the only day you express to other people how
much you appreciate them and care for them. A few words of love can do so much to lift the
spirits of another and can also make you the answer to another person's prayers.
In the name of Christ, I love you all,
Pastor Daryl

DIABETES AND YOUR DIET: BUSTING 7 MYTHS
Some of the things you’ve heard about diabetes & diet probably aren’t true.
If you have diabetes, you’re probably watching what you eat to keep your blood sugar (glucose) levels stable. It’s the
key to maintaining good health & avoiding potentially serious complications.
But many of us have misconceptions about diabetes & diet, says Andrea Dunn, RD, LD, CDE, a registered dietitian &
certified diabetes educator in Cleveland Clinic’s Digestive Disease Institute. Below, she sheds light on some common
myths you may have come across:
Myth #1: You need to follow a “diabetic diet”.
Fact: There is no diabetic diet; anyone can follow the healthy eating style recommended for people with diabetes. That
includes mostly plant-based diet (think vegetables, fruits & whole grains), lean meats, vegetable oils instead of butter or
margarine & low-fat dairy products. Not only will eating healthy keep diabetes in check, it will also help you achieve &
maintain a health weight.
Myth #2: You have to stop eating bread.
Fact: You can still eat bread & other carbohydrates if you have diabetes - but stick to healthy portions. Learn which
foods contain carbohydrates & how many carbs they contain, then spread your carbohydrates throughout the day to keep
blood glucose stable. If you need help in meal planning, a registered dietitian can give you an individual assessment &
help you determine the right amount of carbohydrates for your needs.
Myth #3: Avoiding sugar will help you control diabetes.
Fact: Sugar is just one part of the “total carbohydrates” you’ll need to watch to keep your glucose levels stable. To de-
termine the number of carbs you’re consuming at each meal, check the food label. Look at the serving size & compare it
to the amount on your plate. Check the total carbohydrate grams per serving & do the math.
Say the serving size on the label reads 1 cup & the total carbohydrates per serving reads 45 grams. You have 2 cups on
your plate, or 90 grams of carbohydrates. How does that fit into your carbohydrate budget of the meal, considering all
the other carb-containing foods you plan to eat? Most doctors recommend 45 to 60 grams of carbohydrates per meal,
depending on your calorie needs.

DIABETES AND YOUR DIET: BUSTING 7 MYTHS (continued)
Myth #4: You can eat all the meat & fat you want because they have zero carbs.
Fact: Eating less fat, especially saturated fat, from meat & other foods is important for heart health. This is especially
true if you have type 2 diabetes because your risk of heart disease is two to four time higher than normal. Stay heart-
healthy by eating a variety of mainly plant-based foods.
Myth #5: Juice is better for you than soda.
Fact: Half a cup of juice contains the same amount of carbohydrate as half a cup of soda. Juice might contain more nu-
trients, but it can raise blood glucose levels just as much as soft drinks can. Switch to water & other zero-calorie drinks
for your main beverages. If you drink juice at all, limit the quantity & include its carbs in your carbohydrate budget for
the meal or snack.
Myth #6: If you’re overweight, you’re doomed to get diabetes.
Fact: You can help delay or even prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes by losing just 5 to 7 percent of your weight & by
getting a minimum of two and a half hours of exercise per week. Those are findings from the Diabetes Prevention Pro-
gram, a major study conducted at multiple U.S. Medical Centers. Small changes can add up to a big difference in your
health!
Myth #7: If you take diabetes medication, you don’t have to watch what you eat.
Fact: You need to take charge of what you eat & how active you are to stay on top of diabetes. Lifestyle, including what
we eat & how much we exercise, is the cornerstone of good health whether we have diabetes or not. But, always follow
your doctor’s advise about medications & monitoring your blood glucose.

“DID YOU KNOW….”

As a church, we paid 100% of our 2010 Apportionments. This is the 8th consecutive year that we have accomplished
this goal. A wonderful testament to our faithfulness & generosity.

F I A (aka Faith in Action)

We have several activities planned in the future, please add them to your calendar. On April 3, we are planning the an-
nual picnic with some changes from previous years. This year, it will be held on a Sunday immediately after worship
service & will be held on the church grounds. So, come to church & stay for a fun picnic, games & festivities.
Our next fun time will be Saturday, April 9. Please join us in Fellowship Hall at 6:30 pm for an old fashion, “ICE
CREAM SOCIAL”, with fresh strawberries & other toppings. A program is pending. Instead of the dessert auction
we’ve had previously, this will be our fundraiser this year. We are supporting “Food 4 Kids” as our community outreach
project. We also have an adopted family. Come, get your fill of ice cream & help us with our community projects.
FIA meets the first Friday night of each month from October through June & would welcome anyone to join us.
If you have any questions, please contact Joyce Baugher or any FIA member.

GREAT LAKES SCRIP CENTER FUNDRAISER

Do you know that you could become a fundraiser for Druid Hills UMC simply by shopping and/or eating at your favor-
ite restaurants and by giving gift cards for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, etc?
What Is Scrip? Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. When you purchase scrip, you’re purchasing prepaid gift
cards that are used just like cash. You can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essen-
tials, and with every purchase, you earn revenue for DHUMC.
How scrip generates revenue for you - Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer
a substantial discount. The discount - from two to fifteen percent or more – is our organization’s revenue.
The list of participating retailers & family order forms are located in the Narthex in the sanctuary or in the church office.
Retailers regularly offer additional contributions to participating non-profit organizations. These bonus offers are usually
posted in the Sunday bulletin.
From August 2010 through December 2010, we raised $605. If you have any questions or need additional information,
please feel free to contact Carole Newlin at the church office, 629-5688, during normal business hours or at home, 236-
3411.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS NEED SHORT-TERM HOST FAMILIES IN JULY

EF Educational Homestay Program is looking to place high school age students from China with volunteer host families
for 3 short weeks this summer in July. These students are coming to our area to improve their English language skills
and to experience American family life. Host families are asked to provide a bed for the students, an extra plate at the
table, transportation to/from the course center for classes/activities and a warm welcoming environment. Youths from
the host families can even earn community service hours by hosting! And...for every family that hosts from your
church, EF will make a $25 donation to your church. So, check your calendar, this is an incredible mission opportu-
nity for a mutually valuable learning experience for all your family members. If you are interested in more informa-
tion, please call Janet Mitchell, Program Leader at 854-6200.
