Removing Land Rover Discovery rear 3-bolt differential

flange without service tool LRT-51-008

Here are the Land Rover overhaul manual instructions.
The assumption is that you don't have LRT-51-008 or LRT-51-003.

Both rear wheels snould be on the round.

In lieu of LRT-51-008 you can use a large socket (36mm works well, but make sure it's deep enough),
several flat washers and an 8mm x about 40mm x 1.25mm pitch class 10.9 (or better) bolt and a nut to
fit it. The nut isn't pictured below, but it's fitted as in the illustration above.

Once you've removed the rotoflex apply heat to the pin to help loosen the loctite.
Once heated, place the socket over the centralizing pin, making sure the socket isn't against the
shoulder of the pin, thread the nut all the way on to the bolt, thread the cap screw in to the end of the
pin fully.

Hold the cap screw with a box end wrech and turn the nut to pull the pin loose.
When loose remove the bolt, socket and pin (remember the pin will be hot).
Remove the pinion nut and pull the flange off the pinion.
Remove the nylock nut and washer.
You can then replace the oil seal, or whatever other work you need to perform.
To refit, install new oil seal if needed, install the flange, install flat washer and using a new nylock nut
tighten the nut to 130 Nm.
Apply Loctite 601 or 638 to the large diameter of the pin and insert in to the flange.
