PROGRAMS IN THE U.S. FOR INTERNATIONAL

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
The holiday season is over and it’s time to make plans for 2011. Every year,
hundreds of Brazilian High School students head out to the U.S. to take part in a
wide range of programs. How to choose and learn about all the different options?
Do not fear, EducationUSA is here! We have made a list and a summary of the
different types of programs in the U.S. available to High School students.
1) Public High School Programs: These 6-month or 1-year exchange programs
are represented in Brazil by various organizations. Students will study at a public
high school and live with and American family, but they do not usually choose
which US city they will go to.
2) Public High School Programs - privately organized: These are rare cases
when students have a family friend who lives in the U.S. and is willing to house
them for a semester or year while the student attends a public High School in the U.S. In this case, students should contact the High
School directly to check if the institution can provide the documents needed for a student visa. All students are required to pay a tuition
fee, which may vary. These programs are usually more expensive than the ones done through for-profit organizations, but the student
can choose which authorized school to attend.
3) Boarding School Programs: Boarding schools are private High Schools that offer classes and housing for students. Although much
more expensive than public high school programs, boarding schools are becoming more popular among international students for the
wide range of programs offered in arts, sports, and college prep courses. Applicants can contact the school directly and, of course, the
nearest EducationUSA Advising Center in case they have any questions regarding the application process. Peterson’s Boarding School
Search is a great tool! (www.petersons.com)
4) Summer programs/ camps: Many universities and boarding schools in the U.S. offer summer programs to high school students. This
is a great way for international students to experience all the advantages of attending classes and events on a U.S. college or boarding
school campus. Summer camps are also a great option for students who want to have some fun, improve their English skills and take a
few classes as well. The EducationUSA Advising Centers can also help you with these types of programs.
5) English as a Second Language (ESL) Programs: There are universities and boarding schools in the U.S. that offer special classes
(mostly during the summer) for students under 18 or still in High School. Another option is the ESL programs offered by Language
institutes all over the U.S.
** All these programs require international students to request a student visa before traveling. For more information contact the nearest
EducationUSA Advising Center.
