December 2010 Monthly Report

1. Student Legislative Council Meetings

SLC 68/22 November 30, 2010
• As is evident in the minutes, this was an abbreviated meeting of the 68th
SLC. All items were struck from the agenda other than a first reading out
the audited financial statement. These audited financials were presented
in as clear and concise a form as a complex document of their type can,
and gave us a good view of how solid our operation is being ran.
o The first reading carried unanimously 12-0-0
SLC 68/23 December 7, 2010
• The executives and faculty reps gave detailed updates of their actifities
over the course of the preceding two weeks. I won’t repeat these, as they
are available in the minutes.
• We voted on the second reading of the audited financial statements, this
time with a larger number of SLC members present, once again it passed
unanimously 20-0-0. I voted in favor for the same reasons mentioned
above.
• Council had a lengthy discussion regarding two remaining food vendors in
MacEwan Hall. I was in vocal support of the “Fuel for Gold” program as it
offers selections in line with student demand for, and general market trend
of, Healthy food options. Fuel for gold is an athlete-centric offering from
the Canadian Sport Centre, which is already on campus in the residence
Dining Centre and will be a valued addition to our already excellent
selection of Mac Hall vendors.
o Council voted unanimously 20-0-0 to support the approval of Fuel
for Gold, to join Umi Sushi, Korean BBQ and Curry Grill as our new
food vendors.

2. Faculty Work (and connecting with constituents)

Teaching Excellence Awards
• Following nominations, I once again begun to make numerous classroom
visits, this time to conduct student evaluations of those professors
nominated for the award. I visited a total of 5 Haskayne classes. The very
positive words from many of the students as I visited these classes
reinforced the importance of programs like these, and the importance
overall of recognizing excellence out of our faculty and staff in all its forms.
I very much look forward to working through this process once again next
semester.
Haskayne Faculty Council
• Received a number of presentations from Dr. Waverman, Dr. Bowen, Dr.
Lee and Dr. Dewald.
• Shell forum will now be known as the Bank of Montreal Forum
• Ryan Lee will be staying on as the Associate Dean Undergraduate
• We are changing our entry requirements to permit students with 2 or less
undergrad courses to enter as first year B.Comm status.
• Concerning early admission applications, we are up 25% over this time
last year

3. Committee Work
Teaching Excellence Awards
• December 3rd – Met and discussed the particulars of the program (what
the awards look like this year, how winners are selected, and how many
winners will be from each faculty). We reviewed the extensive list of
nominees and began to prepare class room visit presentations.
Committee on Academic Policy
• This was my first meeting with this committee. We looked at a number of
documents and discussed a draft copy of the recommendations from the
Institutional Learning & Teaching Plan Task Force
Policy Development and Review Committee
• December 2nd – Went over the review process, and discussed how often
policy needs to be reviewed in order to stay relevant and well known. We
discussed what responsibilities well where in the organization and ran
through an exercise where we attempted to classify different pieces of
policy by committee.

4. Other
Calgary Student Caucus Meet & Greet
• December 2nd – Met with members of the Students’ Associations and
Students’ Unions of SAIT, MRU and ACAD. Had a chance to talk
policy as well as academic programs and the general directions of our
respective institutions.

5. Goals – capture on goal tracking sheet

Clubs trailer project: We continue to wait on a letter which is an important
component of the package. As a result, the entire project has been further
shifted forward. Should we not have the letter by the time classes resume, we
will proceed without it, as this project is important to a number of students.
