The iPad is now one the most useful tools speech therapists have available for therapy. It is not only handy but also signicantly more aordable than conventional paper materials. The app store contains over 300 applications designed to be used for promoting speech and language skills, however the quality of these applications vary signicantly. On my blog geekslp.com I review new apps and give ideas about how SLPs can use this amazing tools for therapy. As a developer myself, I study app usage and the impact of the apps on practice. I have decided to compile a list of apps that I believe oer quality in design and content to my fellow clinicians. My goal is not to judge the apps by any mean, my goal is just to give suggestions on how the apps could be used.

Speech Therapists are amongst the most creative professionals I meet, and if we were able to make a therapy session with ashcards and worksheets fun and useful for teaching skills, I am sure you will nd in every app something that will help you help a child. If you are a developer and want to have your app included on this list, or if you are an SLP and would like to also include an app on this list, just send me an email to geekslp@yahoo.com and I would be glad to post it here. I hope you all enjoy your iPad and if you get a chance visit my blog at www.geekslp.com Have a fun day, GeekSLP

AAC APPS
It is not about the app with the most features- it is about the app that meets the needs of the student.
AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. In the not too far past, school districts were obligated to spend thousands of dollars on a dedicated device that would allow children to communicate their basic wants and needs, today the iPad, iPhone & iPod touch give these children and adults a form of alternative communication that not only removed the stigma from carrying around a dedicated device, but it gives in fact a status of ICON NAME

ARTICULATION/PHONOLOGY
So many great apps you will not believe you spent so many years using paper ashcards.
I am proud to say that I was the creator of the concept of articulation in december of 2009. We did not even know there could be anything like an iPad at that time. I still remember that when I told a friend I was creating apps, I had to explain what an app was. It is crazy to believe that this was just over one year ago. Today, app developers use the concept I created to develop apps with dierent features that have made your paper cards obsolete. The application I rst created in this area is called Smarty Speech and it was released under the name Mobile Articulation Probes was a little more fun, so we switched to Smarty Speech. Smarty Speech was indeed a revolution in the concept at the months back, we did not have half of the apps for articulation today. Everyday one new app is placed on the app store, and as with everything you need to look for what you need: do you need to use it in group? Do you need audio built in? Voice recorder? You may, you may not. In October of 2010, I released a new articulation app, that does nearly everything you can image, it is called Articulate it! and it is included on the list bellow. As many of you will see, many times you will have several digital ashcards, when I created the rst application for time. When I submitted papers to present in conferences a few

in January of 2010. I have decided that we need a name that it articulation apps, since the caseload in this area is always large.

Apraxia of Speech is a speech disorder that affects the motor skills associated with speech.
All the apps currently available in the iTunes app store reflect a structure that is in line with this approach. Last year I became very interested in developing a new app for apraxia, which has pushed me to learn and research the subject more than ever.. I own and have used about 95% of all the Apraxia apps on the apps store, and a recent discussion on Linkedin showed me that people would really benefit from learning the differences and similarities of each app. This blog post has a companion podcast where I demo the five apps discussed here. How educational institutions can purchase apps and get 50% off :
Apple has implemented a program called The Volume Purchase program. This program allows approved educational institutions to receive 50% off when 20 or more copies of the same app are purchased for their staff members. It is important to note that the developers have the option to opt out of this discount; therefore, not every application will offer the discount even if you purchase 20 copies. Developers have to option for giving the discount. This way, if an educational institution chooses to purchase 20 copies of any of their apps, they will receive 50% off on the cost of the application. This is a signicant saving for the educational institution.
Here is how the program works: Someone from an educational program must enroll by becoming the program manager for your institution. The program manager will be in charge of making the purchases, and after the codes are downloaded this person is in charge of distributing codes that teachers, therapists and other staff members can use to download the application free of charge on their end.
How to sign up The program manager can sign up for the program by visiting the following link:http://eduvpp.apple.com/asvpp.html
Forms of payment
The program manager can make payments using credit cards (American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa), debit cards, cashiers check, money orders, and even wire transfer. Financing is also available. For more information you can visit :http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/volume/us/terms.html
How do I get the app? After the program manager purchases the copies of the application he will receive codes that can be distributed to the staff members or students. Each person receiving the code must login to their iTunes account and redeem the code. The redeem link is on the right side of the iTunes store

Gaming Apps into education: Can even Angry Birds promote learning?
by GeekSLP
Opportunities for teaching and learning are everywhere. Language you are not already hooked into Angry Birds, or are afraid of
is also everywhere. Given this scenario, it drives me crazy when I loosing your prestige because you downloaded it, you may nd a hear someone say: this is a horrible tool; I dont know how this good excuse for downloading it or owning it on this post. The idea could be used for teaching,or this is just a game. behind Angry Birds is that the birds need to hit the pigs to move
I have always been an advocate to the fact that a good teacher and on to the next level. You may have noticed that in order to win the a good speech therapists will not need specic tools to teach greatest number of stars you may need some strategic thinking students. Well, specic tools that do the work for you are great prior to sending your birds out there. because they guide us on the teaching experience; however, we I see that Angry Birds can be used in so many different ways to must not forget that a tool is JUST a tool and it was not designed teach students new vocabulary, the use of coherent language, to replace you as a therapist or a teacher.(Please note I am not at basic question/answering skills and even story telling skills. You all discrediting the advantages of apps for learning ; as I have will just need to adjust the level of scaffolding needed to get into created 21 of them myself). the skills you are trying to get into.
The explosion of apps for children with special needs, has pushed As a parent, instead of prohibiting your child from playing the us to want tools that do more and betters things all the time. I am game, consider having activities your child needs to complete afraid we may be forgetting to use our creativity to transform any prior to or after moving on to the next level. useless app into a great tool for learning. It all starts with the Here are some ideas I was able to come up with on how need to motivate the students to want to learn; what better way to even Angry Birds can be used to promote learning. do that than using something that already draws their attention? I have decided to start this series on from useless to learning apps with one of the biggest game apps of all times: Angry Birds! If
[30]
1. If your student/child is already familiar with Angry Birds, get him to explain the whole game to you. If you are working on writing skills, this can even be a written assignment.
and also how the Imagine all that can be worked on just from having a student describe the whole concept behind Angry Birds! You can even have some food for thought kind of questions such as: Why do you think the creators picked birds as main characters?, Do all birds work the same way?, What is the goal of the game? Why do you like Angry Birds? There are several questions that can be used to get students to use language just by talking about the game itself. 2. You and the child can play one or several levels together; however the child has to describe their strategy to getting to the pig prior to playing the level. If you are with a group of students; how about having each student think out their strategies separately and get them to discuss which strategy is best and then put into action? You could even have a list of vocabulary words you would like the student to use when describing their strategies such as: a. Verbs such as : deploy the egg (the white birds have to deploy the egg at the appropriate time); pull back, drop, explode, fly, fall, hit, b. Different adverbs when describing the order of the birds and their actions; c. Lots of different prepositions to guide where exactly the birds must land, objects and barriers are being arranged; d. Adjective: used when describing the areas & targets in which the birds must land. Maybe students can take turns to guide each other using key words to complete the levels. 3. Select a level and ask the student to play it once, then ask them to describe their strategies verbally or create a written material that describes their strategies. When teaching students to describe activities using coherent language (a skills that can be very limited in children with language disorders) we want them to follow an order you first did this.. then that. You can use each level on Angry Birds to teach that skill. The game has an order in which things happen. You can guide students to describe it step by step which you guide them. You can both sit together to reproduce the steps he describe on the same level and even think out better ways to achieve the same goal. There are tons of other ways in which Angry Birds can be used to promote language learning. These were just a few examples of how creativity can have more weight than the specific tool you have in front of you. In the end it is all about how you decide to use it. I will be back on this with more from useless to teaching app. In the end it is all about how YOU choose to use the tool that makes the difference! Think about that. Geek SLP ( AKA Barbara Fernandes)

Strategy apps which allow users to reach the goal in several different ways is one of the best gaming styles for language therapy. The simple fact that teachers and students can discuss their own strategies to reaching the goal is in of itself an amazing fun expressive language task.

iPad/Apps accessories.
Protecting and disinfecting your device can be as fundamental as owning an iPad. For sure, none of these accessories come with the purchase of the iPad and therefore they are extra expenses. Some accessories I like to dene as essential accessories, others as non-essential. If you have a grant or are seeking funding for your iPad, you need to make sure you do your research on the accessories you want to include with the fund request.
