2011-2012 SLICE: Student Leaders In Civic Engagement program application

Members of the Thayne Center’s SLICE: Student Leaders in Civic Engagement program take on a peer
leadership role at Salt Lake Community College. Positions are available for both new and returning
students. SLICE members complete a minimum of 100 direct service and training hours each semester.
Applicants must demonstrate prior experience with volunteer service, community activities, and/or civic
or political engagement. If selected as a SLICE member, students may receive a full tuition waiver each
semester, pending completion of program requirements, including minimum service/training hours, and
minimum 2.5 GPA. If students are unable to meet all requirements, they are responsible to repay the cost
of their tuition waiver. If extenuating circumstances exist, they will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Finalists for SLICE membership participate in a competitive interview process. Selected SLICE members
must commit to meeting every Thursday from 1:00-2:30pm during both fall and spring semesters.

Applicants must meet the following qualifications to be considered:

x Enrolled as a full-time student at SLCC (12 or more credit/hours)
x Minimum 2.5 GPA each semester
x Utah resident
x File a FAFSA (www.fafsa.ed.gov) and have the results sent to SLCC (Federal SLCC Code:
005220). If you have questions, call Financial Aid at 801-957-4663.
x Two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your service/civic engagement
activities. Examples include a service-learning professor, or a representative from a non-profit
agency.
x Attach an essay (two pages, typed, double-spaced) answering the following questions: What
service to the community have you been involved in? How have those experiences affected your
goals, your worldview, and/or your educational path? What do you hope to bring to your
experience as a SLICE member?
x Include a copy of your high school transcript (for new students) or SLCC transcript (for
continuing students). Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
