• Azreen walked home.

She kept thinking about what Awang had

told her. Madhuri was not her sister. Now she remembered
seeing a woman who looked like Madhuri. Was she Madhuri’s
mother?
• When she looked out the window, she saw the woman with
long hair again walked towards her house and pointed at
something near a pile of wood.
• Azreen told her father about the woman.
They went outside and found no one.
• Azreen said when she and Madhuri was
young, she remembered the woman staring
at them when they walked back from
school. The night after Madhuri’s death, she
appeared again. Azreen heard her crying.
• She also told her father that she knew
Madhuri was not her real sister.

• Salleh bent down to pick up something from the pile of
wood. When he straightened, Azreen saw he was holding his
parang.
• Salleh flung the parang on the ground and Azreen picked it
up. There was a stain of something white and sticky . Like tree
sap. • Azreen remembered the woman
had been pointing at the parang
and Pn. Normala had told her that
Madhuri had bled with white blood.
• Now, Madhuri realised that
Madhuri must have knocked down
a cup filled with latex which had
stained her clothes. The same latex
must have stained the parang.
• It had become clear to her that
her father had killed Madhuri !

Salleh recalled what happened on that fateful day…
• He went to the jungle to chop some wood. Suddenly he saw
Madhuri was hugging someone at the rubber estate, someone
who was not her husband. Then the man left after hugging
Madhuri. Salleh became angry and asked Madhuri who the man
was. Salleh said he would kill him. However, Madhuri said she was
in love with the man. The anger within his chest boiled over.
• He could not control himself and
he slashed Madhuri. She fell and
knocked over the container filled
with latex. Salleh pulled his parang
away but it was too late. Madhuri
was dead.
• After knowing the truth, Azreen
felt tears rolling down her cheeks.
She felt no anger, no resentment.
Only loss. Then she ran away from
her father.
