•At the Old Lady’s house, the Old Lady told
Azreen everything she knew about what had
happened on the tragic day.
• She said an Indian boy had found
Madhuri’s body in the rubber estate and ran
to Hj Ghani’s house to inform him.
• The Old Lady saw Madhuri lying against a
tree with a gash across the side of her body.
The gash could only been made by a large
blade.
• When Hj Ghani and his relatives arrived,
the Old Lady slipped away.
• Azreen wondered why Hj Ghani and other
people tried to cover up the death of
Madhuri.
•The Old Lady said perhaps Hj Ghani knew who killed Madhuri and decided
to cover up the deed because the investigation into a murder can sometimes
dig up more secrets than necessary and it would bring more harm to the
innocent.

• At Haji Ghani’s house, Puan Fatihah
was in Madhuri’s room.
• She remembered the day her husband
first saw Madhuri. On that day, Madhuri
was reciting a poem at an event and Haji
Ghani was impressed by her sweet voice.
A month after that he had asked
Madhuri’s parents if he could marry
Madhuri and Salleh had agreed.
• From that day on, Fatihah’s life had
changed and she had lost everything to
Madhuri.
• Puan Fatihah let out a deranged laugh
and she snatched the silk that drape
Madhuri’s seat and stalked out angrily from
Page 79- 80 the room.

• Azreen was in Madhuri’s room. She was surprised to find photographs of
Madhuri torn into three parts. She wondered who did that.
• Suddenly her father entered the room and ordered her to get out. He was
a little surprised when he saw the torn photographs and told her not to
touch Madhuri’s things.

Get out! I never

gave you But Abah, I found
permission to these photographs
enter here !

I said leave! You

have no right to
touch you sister’s
things. Go to the
living room. Your
mother needs you. Page 85 - 86

• Azreen went to the living room to check on her mother.
• Her mother told her that she kept dreaming about the accident
that took her leg and told Azreen not to blame herself.

You were such a lively girl,

sayang. Don’t change that.
You know how much I love
you no matter what. I’m
dying , my dear. When I’m
gone, please promise me
not to cry too much. Take
care of your father. You’re
so much like him in temper.

• Azreen remembered years ago,
on the day of her mother’s
accident, Asraf was being scolded
by the farm owner for leaving the
farm gate open, causing their bull
to escape. Azreen who happened
to pass by heard the commotion
and took the blame for Asraf.

• Suddenly, there was a loud

crash. Azreen’s father and
mother were riding on a
motorcycle and had crashed into
the bull. As a result, her mother
lost the use of her leg.
• Azreen’s father caned her but
she remained loyal to Asraf and
never told anyone about the
truth. Page 93 - 95

• Later, Azreen went to the Old Lady’s house. The Old Lady knew what
had actually happened and told her to tell her parents the truth and
not to end up living like her.

• She told Azreen that her husband was a drunkard, always beat her
and yelled at her. One day, when her husband kicked and hit her hard,
she grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed him. As a result, everyone
called her a husband-killer and because of that she had to move into
the jungle to forget the incident and get away from the gossips.

• Not long after that, the villagers

forgot about her. To them, she was a
crazy woman who once murdered her
husband in cold blood.

• Azreen recalled the day when she accepted to go on to on a foster
programme. It was the chance for her to leave her home for two
months.
• She got along really well with her foster parents, Datin Sharifah and
Datuk Zulkifli. They were kind enough to give Azreen’s mother a
wheelchair. Azreen’s father was not happy about the gift and said they
were just showing off.
• A year later, Azreen received a
scholarship to study in England. She
was glad to accept it as she could
get away from home.
• Datin Sharifah said she would help
out with Azreen’s living expenses in
