TURKEY AND RUSSIA

17 NOVEMBER,2005 , EURACTIV :
QUOTE : “.....For centuries, Turkey and Russia have been rivals for
regional supremacy. Recently, the two countries have realised that friendly
relations are in the interest of them both. Accordingly, co-operation rather
than rivalry appears to dominate their ties. This development has been
welcome by the EU, which sees these countries as the two largest
imponderables on the European horizon......
The general understanding is that Russia is a European country while Turkey
belongs to Asia, despite the fact that the two vast countries both span the
continents of Europe and Asia (although they no longer share a border). The reason
for the above distinction is that in both countries the majority of the population as
well as the capital city are located on the continent where they are respectively
assigned......”. UNQUOTE.

RUSSIA-Turkey Blue Stream Natural Gas
Pipeline
 17 NOVEMBER,2005 , EURACTIV :

 QUOTE : “.... In December 2004, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan paid a visit to
Moscow before Russian President Vladimir Putin reciprocated with a trip to Ankara in January
2005. In November 2005, Putin attended the inauguration of a jointly constructed Blue Stream
natural gas pipeline in Turkey. This sequence of top-level visits has brought several important
bilateral issues to the forefront....
 ... Turkish companies are present in significant numbers in Russia’s construction, retail and brewing

industries. Russia’s investment in Turkey is worth $350 million while Turkey’s investment in Russia
totals $1.5 billion.
 The two countries consider it their strategic goal to achieve "multidimensional co-operation",

especially in the fields of energy, transport and the military. Specifically, Russia aims to invest in
Turkey’s fuel and energy industries, and it also expects to participate in tenders for the
modernisation of Turkey’s military.
 In the strategic energy sector, the two countries are in agreement to implement large-scale projects,

some of which compare with the Blue Stream gas pipeline, which was officially inaugurated in
November 2005. Among other developments, Russia will increase gas supplies to Turkey and will
allow Russian companies to engage in gas distribution in Turkish territory. Talks are also underway
on ways to increase Russian electricity deliveries to Turkey.....UNQUOTE.

“...In Defense of Turkish values...”
 BBC NEWS 14TH JULY,2008 : QUOTE : “.... A top Turkish prosecutor has brought
charges against 86 people allegedly involved in a coup plot.

Aykut Cengiz Engin said those charged included leading figures from the army,
business and the secular press.

The charges follow speculation about a shadowy group of hardline nationalists

determined to act in what they see as defence of Turkey's secular values.

Tensions have been rising in Turkey amid efforts to close the ruling party over
alleged anti-secular activities.

The Constitutional Court is considering a case against the AK Party, in which it is

accused of aiming to introduce Sharia law in Turkey, in contravention of the strictly
secular constitution.

The Turkish prime minister and president - both AKP members - are named in that
case and could be barred from office. They and the party reject the charges, which
they say are part of a campaign against the party....* UNQUOTE.

“..Russia and Turkey to increase their
trade turnover....”
 THE VOICE OF RUSSIA , 16TH MARCH,2011 :

 QUOTE: “... Russia is the second biggest trading partner of Turkey, and Turkey is the seventh
biggest trading partner of Russia. At a summit in Moscow Wednesday, which coincided with a
session of a high-level bilateral cooperation council, the sides looked into possibilities to take their
economic partnership to even more impressive heights.
 We hear about this from President Dmitry Medvedev:
 "As strategic partners in all fields, Russia and Turkey are exploring ways to sharply increase their
trade turnover. In 2009, this amounted to almost 40 billion dollars. In the crisis year of 2010, to just 25
billion. But with the crisis behind, we can quickly ramp it up to 100 billion dollars a year."
 The major fields of Russian-Turkish cooperation are oil, gas, metals, construction,
telecommunications, farming, tourism and now also nuclear electricity generation. Russia is to build
the first nuclear station in Turkey, in Akkuyu close to the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
 "The situation in Japan poses questions about the safety of nuclear plants. The answer is that a
nuclear plant can be safe, but only provided a safe location, a safe design and skilled operators of it.
In fact, the modern nuclear industry can solve energy problems in a way that is highly economical
and environmentally-friendly into the bargain," said President Medvedev....”.UNQUOTE.

Christian Killings Probed in Turkey’s Ergenekon Case, AA Says

 The lead prosecutor in the investigation into alleged coup plots against Turkish
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is examining links to the 2007 killing of
Christians in Malatya, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported.
 The former head of the military police in Malatya was detained on authority of a

search order from prosecutor Zekeriya Oz, Haberturk newspaper said without
specifying how it got the information. A soldier was also detained in the eastern
province of Siirt as Oz ordered raids in nine different provinces, Anatolia said.
 Malatya was the scene of the 2007 torture and killing of three people, including a

German national, who worked at a Christian book publisher. The attack is being
investigated as part of the widening probe into the alleged “Ergenekon” plan to
foment domestic chaos that would lead to an overthrow of Erdogan’s

Russia, Turkey to Sign Bosphorus Bypass Oil
Pipe Deal
 BLOOMBERG ,SUGUST 4TH,2009 .By Ali Berat Meric and Stephen Bierman - August

Aug. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Russia will sign an accord with Turkey on building a pipeline for sending
Black Sea oil to the Mediterranean, bypassing congestion at the Bosphorus Straits as Bulgaria
may back out of a similar project.
 OAO Gazprom, Russia’s largest company, and Turkey’s Calik Holding AS will sign an accord
to build a pipeline between the northeastern port of Samsun and a terminal at Ceyhan on
Turkey’s Mediterranean coast, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko told reporters in
Ankara today before a visit by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin later this week.
 Increased oil output from the Caspian region as Kazakhstan’s Kashagan field plans to begin
output will add additional tanker shipments via the Black Sea. Tankers have been delayed as
much as a month in passing through the Bosphorus Straits because of weather and seasonal
conditions.
 Bulgaria is examining canceling or delaying energy projects as its budget deficit widens,
Deputy Prime Minister Simeon Djankov said in an interview with Bloomberg July 31. Russian
pipeline operator OAO Transneft is leading a project to build a 1 billion-euro ($1.4 billion) oil
link from the Bulgarian Black Sea port of Bourgas to the Greek port of Alexandroupolis on the
Aegean Sea.
 Gazprom Deputy Chief Executive Officer Alexander Medvedev in July last year said the
company’s liquids arm Gazprom Neft, would be interested in joining the Samsun-Ceyhan
pipeline project planned by Italy’s Eni SpA and Calik.
 Gazprom Neft is also a partner in the Bourgas- Alexandroupolis project.....”. UNQUOTE.
