The Chimes

Title of position: Managing production editor

Basic function and responsibility:


The Chimes production editor assists the Chimes editor-in-chief with the administrative
duties of The Chimes’ print edition, meeting with assignment editors and design editors
to solidify plans for upcoming editions and coordinating other visual elements, including
photography and graphic design. In addition, this person works most directly with the
design editors and editor-in-chief to implement any redesigns. The ideal candidate is
organized, a strong leader with extensive leadership experience, and able to enforce
deadlines. The ideal candidate has had at least one journalism internship.

Duties:
1. Assist the editor-in-chief with setting a broad vision for the print edition of The
Chimes, and implement a strategy for achieving that vision.

2. Act as the second-in-command for the print side of the paper. Assume the editor-
in-chief’s responsibilities in the case of an emergency or in the absence of the
editor-in-chief.

3. Upload The Chimes to the off-campus printer’s server. Stay in close contact with
American Foothill Publishing about any changes in the print production schedule.

4. Troubleshoot technical issues, including problems with the computers, printers


and servers. Establish good rapport with IT to prevent any emergencies.

5. Facilitate communication between assignment editors and design editors, and


intervene in disputes when necessary. Act as the liaison between the visual and
the editorial staff in general.

6. Meet with the editor-in-chief and managing web editor on a weekly basis to
discuss major projects, visions and problems.

7. Make page assignments for advertisements the advertising manager assigns each
week. Place ads on pages.

8. Oversee the distributor and the distribution process, intervening when necessary.

9. Attend weekly budget meetings and offer design and story ideas on a regular
basis.

Qualifications:
General: Strong organizational skills. Detail oriented. Ability to delegate tasks
and supervise employees. Demonstrate working knowledge of computer design
software.
Education and experiences: At the time of election or appointment, have a
cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a scale of 4.0, have completed at least one
semester at Biola University with a full-time student status and currently be
enrolled as a full-time student. During the term of service, maintain the previously
mentioned grade point average on a semester basis and maintain a full-time student
status. Prior experience within the field of journalism and print design are
necessary.
